  • thanks for posting this ^^...in love with Mr Thornton hehe...wished I were Margaret even I had to get hit by a stone ;)

  • I still dont understand why john's mom hates margaret.

  • @luckypeachgurl

Wel personally I do not think that she hates her in particular. I have only just begun reading the novel and finished seven chapters, so I cannot say for certain--or rather not at all--whether this is implied in the book as well, but to me it would seem that her very existance revolves around her son only, Thornton himself being very fond of her as well. Therefore, she is afraid that Margaret will take him away. So it is not through to mere scorn of hatefulness I should think.

  • @melvinhendrikse

I am sorry if I did not fully enlighten you in this matter. For me it would seem only natural, as my mother--and without positive doubt many others--is disposed in the exact same way. The wonderful thing however is that eventually his mother is willing to make a sacrifice and even admits that she might like Margaret as she herself had overcome her pride. Otherwise surely it would have been the cause of a rift between both of them, for indeed it is very suffocating.

  • Thank you for this scene !

  • I adore "North and South"! It's one of the most romantic stories, written in the Victorian Era, nearby "Pride and Prejudice", "Jane Eyre" or just "Wuthering Heights". Thank you for existing!

  • is RA available? :)

  • Oh Mama Thornton, setting your son up for rejection, shame on you.

I still don't get why Margaret's like "get out there and stop them" and then she runs out herself.

  • i'm not sure but i think it's because she saw the one guy pick up the stone and Thorton didnt, though i see your point

  • He is a great actor and so beautiful!

  • LadyTinidril82, I would not stop laughing at your comment! Actually though, in the book he said that he rushed out because it was the right thing to do, not because of what she said, but we know the power a woman has over a man who is smitten by her. And here is how you can watch an unchoppy version of this part; North and South -Episode 2/Part 5-French Subtitles. And here is a part from the book.He went away as if weights were tied to every limb that bore him away from her. No disappointment!

  • I'm glad my comment amused you. :) I've read the book, but I'd forgot his motivation at that part; thanks for pointing that out. I amuse myself by interpreting the film scene in the way below (because I like it when love makes characters act goofy), but actually, the way the book describes his feelings when he leaves her are every bit as romantic. :-)

  • I love how Margaret is all, "Go prove your manhood by throwing yourself in front of a crazed mob that is especially angry with YOU in particular," and poor lovestruck Thornton is all, "Ok, here I go," and off like a rocket. :-)

  • @LadyTinidril82 lol! poor lovestruck he is, to be doing something as crazy as that! haha that 'ok here I go' comment is seriously hillarious!

  • Now that I'm reading the book, I see the subtle and more obvious differences. I still love the movie though. :) Richard Armitage... mmmmmm.

  • Ahhh finally someone posted the riot scene! Thanks!

  • North and South is my favorite, this video really highlights Fannie's comments. Thanks for sharing. I welcome any other period drama suggestions.

  • Love N&S & this is one of my favourite parts!! Watched N&S loads of times on DVD!!

    Love RA in it too!!

  • I can only agree this is the best period drama ever!!!! You know the only reason to sign up on several boards was this drama, the novel and of course Richard Armitage. The cast is also perfect and so is the music. I watch the drama and hear the music almost every day.

  • Yes, best period drama! Even better than Pride and Prejudice I think. Without this cast N&S wouldn´t be so popular and perfect how it is now. I listen to the soundtrack every day since I watched the film too! :D But I don´t mind.. it´s one of the most beautiful filmmusic I´ve ever heard. :)

  • This is one of the two very best period dramas ever! There are many, many who feel the same all over the world. There are many websites devoted to this drama and to RA. If you have not read it yet, you should try the novel by Elizabeth Gaskell from which the series was adapted . A wonderful book. I can not even count how many times I have watched this film!

  • BlsflReverie,

How is the script compared to the novel? Are there many alterations?

  • Yes, there are some major alterations, but the the script stays true to the personalities of the characters. But I have to say that the movie and the book stand on their own as stories. The book is beautifully written. The descriptions of John's and Margaret's inner thoughts are wonderful. And the final scene in the book is so perfect! I was moved to read the book after seeing the videos on Youtube. I first read it online at Project Gutenberg.

  • BlsflReverie,

Thanks for the tip on "Project Gutenberg". I will try to read it in English as the only copy in my native language I have been able to trace is one from 1858 (!) in the Royal Library and not available to lend home.

I have to admit I am a little bit reluctant to read it, because I love the adaptation from 2004 and I am afraid that I will be disappointed with it if I read the original.

  • There is no way you'll be disappointed in the book - there are so many absolutely beautiful descriptions of their thoughts and feelings. Book JT is (if possible) even more swoon-worthy than series JT!

  • ChocolateIsMyDrug,

Oh, I am sure the novel is very good. (I have not read it yet.) What I meant was that I am afraid reading it will ruin the very good impression I have of the minseries, similar to the way I became disappointed with BBC's 'Jane Eyre' from 2006 after re-reading Charlotte Brontë's novel (which I had read 20+ years prior to watching that adaptation and did not remember the original text in detail).
