I have to admit, seems this cartoon plot might also work better with the Pink Panther instead of Daffy Duck... but then they'd have to make it more pantomime-based (they'd probably use the usual tricks such as holding up signs, thought balloons with pictures in them, etc.) I also can't imagine the Pink Panther being TOO greedy, or violent against the pack rat (who'd probably be the same as he is in the original short); now we just need the usual Walter Greene PP music score!
I wished people would stop saying cartoons need to be like this now adays, If we had them, then this wouldn't be remebered as mush as they should. Shit Nowadays Aren't Ever Gonna Be Like It Once Was Ever Again. Is Wishful Thinking, But Stop It It Just Remeber These, Buy The Dvds, ANd Share Them With Your Kids And That Will Be That.
Wow!! A good but very strange episode. I love Daffy's rants, very odd and random, but so funny and clever!! :D The plot is quite slow, but the dialogue definitely saves it. Thanks for posting! :D
There's something very surrealistic and psychological about this cartoon. I get the feeling that Robert McKimson was trying to do minimalism a la Chuck Jones, but it didn't really pan out.
Actually, "Moby Duck" (a Daffy Duck/Speedy Gonzales cartoon from the mid-to-late 1960s) is more like "Canned Feud". This could count too, but there's something about Bill Lava's music and the vast, empty desert setting and how Daffy slowly goes insane from dehydration that makes me feel that this cartoon was meant to be some animated psychological drama rather than a funny cartoon.
When I first heard it, I figured it was something Lava might have written in his 'B' movie days. He also did the music for the Joe McDoakes shorts released by Warners so WB would have the rights to that stuff. But I don't know.
Thanks so much for posting this.I've been waiting over 20 years to see this again.I had it on an old VHS then I lost it.Mainly been waiting to see Daffy's mouth when he says 'GOLD!'.I had my own drought for that moment.Untouchable.
It's because in the later shorts they never sped up Mel's voice. You can definitely notice the difference with Porky Pig. It sounds so weird... I don't know why they stopped altering them.
why does mel blanc sound like joe alskey in this short

If Warner Bros. could go back to classic form, Pack Rat & Daffy Cartoons would be GREAT! *Goes insane like Daffy from Art Davis*

I always thought this one was like what you'd see if Stanley Kubrick directed cartoons.

If he had the gun, why wouldn't he use it to get the water from the rat?

Well, Daffy DOES get a happy ending, not in the way he had expected but more than he bargained for.

It's almost like McKimson's late answer to Freleng's 'Canned Feud.'

Daffy saying WOOHOO WOOHOO again at 3:30 in his greedy character!
I wish they would bring back his crazy character.
TheFranceman 2 years ago 17
You can't bring back an original. You will only get a copycat or a remake of Daffy Duck.

@TheFranceman I agree I wish they would Bring back his Crazy character too the one that annoyed and got the best out of his opponent

The opening titles have music which would be more appropriate for a crime melodrama. Does anyone know its origin?

Yeah. The pack rat's design also kinda looks like something out of a Pink Panther cartoon!

This is NOT one of Daffy's better shorts-although I do like the gag with Daffy dancing with the cactus.
glowworm2 2 years ago
well it's from '63, it's sorta what youl'd expect, but i actually really like this.
springofpiesucks 2 years ago 2
I agree- it's one of the finer Daffy shorts from the 60s, and I think it's pretty well done.
madowl85 2 years ago
strange to me, why does Daffy sound so different in this short?
springofpiesucks 2 years ago
Probably because story guy John Dunn wrote endless dialogue. Mel's pooped reading it.
jgbennie 2 years ago
or probably Mel is just trying to voice Daffy as if he was roasting in the desert.
springofpiesucks 2 years ago 2
@jgbennie Mel was supposed to be pooped, just like Daffy in this cartoon.
hasfarr 1 year ago
@hasfarr No, he doesn't have the same expression in his delivery. I think Ian's probably right.
