But in this case, evidence either went missing or did not exist, witnesses did not show up to the trial (told by correupt police not to show up), and 2 alleged assailants who fled to France were caught. When it was found out that one of the accused was a son of an ex minister, they dropped all charges and focused on the Australian guy. Corruption at the worst.

It's whether there's sufficient proof that he's guilty, it's better that a guilty man get off because of lack of evidence than go to gaol, because then innocent people could easily go to gaol too. In other words, if there's any reasonable doubt, he gets acquitted. Here there's plenty of reasonable doubt and evidence has been tampered with

The Australian guy may be guilty or may not; but the video (obviously in defence to one of the sides) shows really manipulative scenes from the political-demographic-social situation in Bulgaria. Only the negative sights are shown drawing a rather false overall impression for this country. But in this case, evidence either went missing or did not exist, witnesses did not show up to the trial (told by correupt police not to show up), and 2 alleged assailants who fled to France were caught. It's whether there's sufficient proof that he's guilty, it's better that a guilty man get off because of lack of evidence than go to gaol, because then innocent people could easily go to gaol too. I grew up in Sofia and know the place well. I am not particularly attached to it, but I never felt the need to carry a knife even late at night in very questionable neighborhoods. Never had any trouble except for petty theft.
The documentary's choice of scenes of squalor and poverty paints an unbalanced picture of Sofia and Bulgaria in general. Absent are pictures of technology parks, concert halls and modern resorts.

The documentary mentions problems with the justice system identified by the EU. Actually, these are more to do with the government's unwillingness to take on organized crime and not with cases of random drunken violence.

The alcohol in Bulgaria is cheap (so the locals could afford it), and this simple fact draws here some degenerate scum from all the world. Add here the fact that the Anglo-Saxons, as a rule, cannot drink well (they become irresponsible, aggressive etc.) unlike the Russians and other East-Europeans, and we have all the components of a disaster waiting to happen. In fact the knife he had with him didn't have Mr Morov's blood on it and the police didn't search anyone else in the pack of lions (i.e. Mr Morov's gang) for a knife and CCTV footage was ignored. If it doesn't suit your judges and their famous psychologist friend (who had a crazy bullying son), they ignore it.

That is enough to show that the authors of the video had intent to show our entire society in a bad light. If you are charged with murder and attempt of murder, in self defence or not, you're bound to be arrested and kept in the arest during the trial - this has nothing to do with the national origin of the parties participating. I have not looked into the statistics but it is pretty easy to see that the average American is over weight and 2x's bigger than the average Bulgarian. It is biased which is why it is so great. His own story after months of rehearsal DOES NOT ADD UP. What happen to the Roma that was beating beaten to death by the gang of 20 men? Why is there not even a scratch on Jock’s head after he was knocked out by 20 men throwing cement blocks at him? How could he even make it out alive after injuring only 2 out of 20-25 “gang” members? Two witnesses, both police officers, testified that when they arrived at the scene they were informed by other officers, as well as members of the gang themselves, that there had been a fight that preceded Palfeeman's intervention.
Another policeman also appeared to back the defence's explanation that Palfreeman had only intervened after witnessing a beating of a Roma.

People have to understand that Bulgaria is not a common law country, there the judges look at the facts and align them to the strictly written laws not to the precedent cases as it is in the common law countries. Therefore Bulgaria has a strictly written definition of what a self-defense is and it is definitely not what has happened that night.
