The television producers when Johnny wanted to sing this song weren't going to let him say "I'm wishin' lord that I was stoned" on live TV. They told him to sing "I'm wishin' lord that I was home." But instead, Mr. Cash looked up in the producers booth and sung "stoned" loud and clear. :)
How do these wet behind the ears singers think they are representing country music? No one these days can compare to the writing/singing of Johnny, Waylon, Willie, etc. If you don't agree, prove it.
@notafanofrosebud I agree that they don't really compare to Johnny et. al., however it's not really fair to say the new guys aren't representing country. It's not their fault they weren't born long enough ago that they could be singing/performing back when the Outlaws were. All music evolves and changes, musicians are, or can be, influenced by different styles, performers, and genres. It may not be the same, but that doen't mean it doesn't represent.
@ser132 Johnny, Willie, Waylon, etc's style of country was different from the country that came before it. They were influenced by rock n roll, and rock music, as much as by earlier country artists. Johnny was hugely influenced by The Carter Family, as well as Elvis, and others. His country music wasn't the same as the Carter's, but it still represented. I think the same could be said for today's musicians. imho
@ser132 That's a good point. I think another point is that the kind of lifestyle which JC grew up in has largely vanished (or changed) so that many of the younger performers don't have the kind of experiences he did (30's depression, dirt farming, cotton picking etc). JC himself commented that once the music came from a lifestyle, now a lifestyle comes from the music.
At the beggining when he says this is for a friend of mine and he looks up to the his right; he was looking at Kris Kristoferson in the audience. He asked him if he could sing his song; but the producers told him he could sing it but; without the part in the course saying he "wished he was stoned". That pissed him off; and thats why when he sings the lyrics how Kris wrote them he looks right up at him again. Love how this video shows what a badass Mr.Cash was.
I met Johnny at a Billy Graham event at Carolina Stadium in Columbia , SC years ago . He was doing a book signing at a Bible book store in West Columbia , for his book THE MAN IN WHITE . Cash was a true gentleman , he was sincere , honest with people , an every day type of man . It was an honor to be able to chat with him for a few moments , I'll never forget him or his music .
I really miss Johnny -- Kris wrote a perfect song for Johnny to sing -- the lyrics say it all -- mixes Johnny's love for God and country on a "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" -- could listen and watch Johnny sing this over and over again --
This song makes me think of MY DAD -- so, wanted to share it this being Father's Day -- enjoy good thoughts of your Dad if he is no longer with us and if he is, make sure you tell him something special today ! Enjoy the day to all the Father's Dad's and Daddy's out there -- as well as Great Grandpa's, Grandpa's uncles, nephews, brothers and even sons -- especially my three sons Cousy (Zofia), Mickey (Logan and Wesley) and Kris (Sasha, his dog counts) ~~~
I remember answering my phone on a weekend and hearing my Uncle Billy rasping, "Sunday morning coming down..." and knowing exactly how he felt! Through my laughter I identified him, and told him I knew what he was going through... What a classic...
I notice two dislikes on this video. Why would anyone, that does not like Johnny Cah or the song, take time to view this video? Much less, take time to rate this.

oh, by the way, any newcomers to johnnys music, i strongly recommend you check his take on the classic 'orange blossom special' from his show in montreux in '94. talk about an ass kicking 3 minutes. classic cash.
kristofferson wrote the greatest counyry song ever, and johnny truly made the song his own. we will never have a man that impacted music the way johnny did. even though he had his demons, he held true to his convictions. he never hid from his trials but wore them on his sleeve, as if to say "look at my failures. learn from them so that you don't make the same mistakes". a remarkable man. i hope you have found the peace that seemed to elude you for much of your life. r.i.p.
They didn't want Johnny Cash singing the line "Lord I wish I was stoned." Due to his past drug problems and the fact that the TV audience might be taken back by it. But Johnny being Johnny did things his way, didn't tell anyone, and sang the song just like Kris had intended. The first time Johnny sang this song he looked at Kris who is in the seats or a balcony and sort of gave him the "this one is for you pal."
Kristoferson wrote many songs just for Johnny Cash. They were friends since the day that Kris flew in to Johnny's yard in a helicopter and begged him to listen to a song he wrote for him. Johnny listened and a lifetime partnership developed.
He may have stuck to his guns on the lyrics of this song but wouldn't sing " Jesus Christ died for nothing I suppose" when he covered John Prine's "Sam Stone."
Cash was in Newark Deleware in 1997 when I was 18 years old. Before the show we were watching his stage crew drag in equipment, & I spoke to an older gentleman who said his name was Rollins.I asked if he could get Johnny to sing Sunday Morning for us.the man said,"Johnny pretty much does what he wants, but I'll sure ask him"Almost the entire show went by & I thought he wasn't going to sing it,& then he looked up and said-here's a song for the young fellow in the back! I'll NEVER forget it
Man, that must of been so great...my hair would have stood up so straight.............what a great memory...this is one of my favorite songs and i only got turned onto it in the late 90's
@KLUNKET As a child i was about 7 listening to "hurt" and i always wanted to see him on stage or meet him. that must be a great experience you had :) It made me smile. John was one of the coolest, nicest musicians ive heard in my lifetime.
It took quite some time and effort on Kris Kristofferson's behalf before he ever got Johnny Cashs' attention to tell him that he wanted him to sing this song "Sunday Morninging Coming Down" that he had written! If you've not read the biography of Johnny Cash and you like him, you'll love the book telling about his family, life, and about his music! I'm not much of a country music fan but Johnny Cashs' music is among the few that I do love!
Sad song indeed, specially for some of us that are divorced and can not see our kids everyday and even harder when you are far away from them because of your job. Is not Sunday but every day of the week that I miss my kids because I love them a lot and it hurts a lot not seeing their faces and tell them how much I love them everyday.
i met this crazy bastard named Muldoon. He was falling off a bar stool in Old City Philadelphia. It wasn't even noon. He kept talking about this novel he had written, Johhny Cash, and St. Francis. I thought he was full of shit until I found his book on line. SMOKING in BATHROOMS is a great read and although crazy, that Muldoon wrote a good book.

It is great to see these older videos that came from the music shows of the time. Although we didn't have CMT, VH1 and the like we had better music then than we do now... Johnny will live on forever!!!
This song connects me with the spirit of my late Johnny Cash fan dad, who passed away 34 years ago today. I am in tears and I think the way that Johnny sings this is really moving.
Only those of us that have been there can know what he's singing about...Sunday in church is the best cure for a hangover, but when you can't make it, country-blues always does the trick.
When Sunday hurts, it's cause you did Saturday right...and now it's time to get on with the livin'. JR, we'll always hear this song and remember you with your unique sound, your love for music and for life and for leaving us with something that nobody but you could have given us. You are missed.
damn this is one of his best songs ever and its the song that played when my uncle passed away and i will never forget johnny cash reminds me of my uncle so much... my uncle was so amazing and had the voice of johnny
This is one of those songs that touches a note and captures the feeling of loneliness that everyone experiences. Hearing it grabs hold of that emotion and brings it to the surface. Very moving, Kristopherson is a master wordsmith and Cash the quintessential troubadour.
@4192362 you are an uptight little freak.Who cares about spelling on youtube comments?have fun with yourself tonight.I don't know anyone who is so uptight, and waste time correcting peoples mistakes on youtube.lol
When men wrote and sang songs that were worth listening to. Storytellers with heart, soul, class, and experiences that many of us shared.
I'm NOT a big Country Western music fan but Johnny Cash was in a class all of his own. And Kris was very fine too.
I learned to listen to my late fathers music as a young boy in NYC and Cash, Charlie Pride, Eddy Arnold, Roy Clark were a few that grabbed my soul then and have remained since. Today's "C&W" artists can not touch these men.
Hello ..... and "thanks" for your kind and appreciative words regarding my previous post.
The short of what I was saying, outside of my love for Johnny's music, was simply "they do not make 'em like they used to for sure". And this performance slearly exemplifies that.
I clicked on your screen name and saw that you are from Canada. Thanks for being such good neighbors to the people here in America. Glad you're there.
One of my all time contemporary artists is the GREAT Gordon Lightfoot.
Got your kind words and thanks, Would love to visit the old south-USA. I live in Newfoundland where winter (sigh) is seemingly gonna come early this year. Take care.
Hey neighbor ...... how many feet of snow do you get each winter on average? And where in Newfoundland are you? Are you a native? My guess is that snow and cold are quite severe there? I am, for your information, NYC born and raised in Connecticut. New England is a beautiful portion of the U.S. Best to you.
Northeast coast of Nfld. My ancestors are of English background, although a lot of Irish settlers settled on Nfld.'s Avalon Peninsula. Even some French settlers-Northern Nfld. We generally get 3-4 major storms per winter with snow drifts 10-12 feet high at times. Since we use the silly metric system everything is measured in centimetres.
Thanks for the info'. Sounds like a very challenging enviornment in winter. And yes the metric system is not something we use here and I have little recall for it as it was addressed for a period of study when I was in high school a good while ago.
takes me back to the old times. the man in black says it right, good story in the lyrics. sunday mornings are a time of thinking and reflecting on the past.
" wishing to lord that i was stoned" ABC had told johnny cash not to sing about being stoned, but to change the lyrics. but out of respect for kris, the writer, he sang it the way it had been written anyway. what a man.
This is as brilliant a piece of songwriting as has ever been penned...it places us in the middle of a moment and a feeling and would not be the same song without that line. Johnny knew that...and had the guts to risk the fallout and stay true to what Kris' brilliance had captured. Two very special men who had tremendous respect for each other...I'm beginning to believe they just aren't making 'em like that anymore.
@mnnorthcountrygirl1 there are still men such as these and there will be more to come. however the music industry today has away of keeping them quiet. it is sad.
@headredbone Jime Morrison did the same thing on the Ed Sullivan show, he sand light my fire and kept the lyrics "you know i would be a liar if i was to say to you girl we couldn't get much higher"
I really admire Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson, since I listened their music for the first tìme in the 70`s It was kind of skock for me. I tell you why. Because I am mexican, but a mexican who loves country music. Thanks for sharing this wonderful music. Viva Johnny Cash
My ALL TIME FAVORITE Johnny Cash song. Written by one of the greatest Country song writers Kris Kristofferson. Kris, in my opinion, 2nd only to Hank Williams in the writing of the songs of life and how hard it can be at times.
to dirkag22 and rastigre You are both so right. The network told Mr Cash that the word "STONED" was out. He could not sing it. If he did the show may be canceled. Kris was in the balcony, Mr Cash sang the line. History was made. What ever the Man In Black was, he was a man, a friend, and a true artist. Thank you Johnny Cash
I wish someone could repost the version of this which ended up being the released "hit" version. It had a beautifully spoken spoken intro from Johnny talking about his dad hoping trains back during the Great Depression (the released version cuts in right after he finishes speaking). It is really THE definitive performance of this song.
It also features some nicely shot footage of a guy walking through a rainy deserted street that compliments the lyrics nicely.
This song gives me chills to this very day!!! Johnny Cash was one the best artists in history right beside Elvis!!! Kris Kristoffersen was pretty damn good at song writing, as well.
Cash was true to the music and the songwriter. Over and over again through his career, he stood by his friends and never sold anyone out. The courageous stand he took was not for a lyric, or for being stoned, or any of that nonsense. He stood up for his friend, Kris. RIP Johnny, the world is less great with you gone.
I just read that at 1:35 Johnny turns his head towards the balcony at Kris, because ABC told him not to say 'I wish I was stoned' But the man in black did it anyway, hell yeah!
This song always gives me goose bumps. You know when he sings it he's live it. You can just feel it. Amazing

Well written, my friend. God Bless.

Hello ..... and "thanks" for your kind and appreciative words regarding my previous post.

Take care.
QWZXM 2 years ago 2
Hey neighbor ...... how many feet of snow do you get each winter on average? And where in Newfoundland are you? Are you a native? My guess is that snow and cold are quite severe there? I am, for your information, NYC born and raised in Connecticut. New England is a beautiful portion of the U.S. Best to you.
LordofDublin4 2 years ago
Northeast coast of Nfld. My ancestors are of English background, although a lot of Irish settlers settled on Nfld.'s Avalon Peninsula. Even some French settlers-Northern Nfld. We generally get 3-4 major storms per winter with snow drifts 10-12 feet high at times. Since we use the silly metric system everything is measured in centimetres.
QWZXM 2 years ago
Thanks for the info'. Sounds like a very challenging enviornment in winter. And yes the metric system is not something we use here and I have little recall for it as it was addressed for a period of study when I was in high school a good while ago.
Have a pleasant day.

takes me back to the old times. the man in black says it right, good story in the lyrics. sunday mornings are a time of thinking and reflecting on the past.

My ALL TIME FAVORITE Johnny Cash song. Written by one of the greatest Country song writers Kris Kristofferson. Kris, in my opinion, 2nd only to Hank Williams in the writing of the songs of life and how hard it can be at times.
manny5442 2 years ago 8
to dirkag22 and rastigre You are both so right. The network told Mr Cash that the word "STONED" was out. He could not sing it. If he did the show may be canceled. Kris was in the balcony, Mr Cash sang the line. History was made. What ever the Man In Black was, he was a man, a friend, and a true artist. Thank you Johnny Cash
starr522 2 years ago 4
I wish someone could repost the version of this which ended up being the released "hit" version. It had a beautifully spoken spoken intro from Johnny talking about his dad hoping trains back during the Great Depression (the released version cuts in right after he finishes speaking). It is really THE definitive performance of this song.
It also features some nicely shot footage of a guy walking through a rainy deserted street that compliments the lyrics nicely.

Sunday morning, self-loathing, lonelyness, hang overs, the "hair of the dog that bit ya"...
Mr. Cash sums it all up and made it somehow better.

Amen to that!
It somehow has that:
''i've been up all night and can not be bothered to face the world'' feeling, but in a nice, calm way

This song gives me chills to this very day!!! Johnny Cash was one the best artists in history right beside Elvis!!! Kris Kristoffersen was pretty damn good at song writing, as well.
RedsRule1967 2 years ago
Cash was true to the music and the songwriter. Over and over again through his career, he stood by his friends and never sold anyone out. The courageous stand he took was not for a lyric, or for being stoned, or any of that nonsense. He stood up for his friend, Kris. RIP Johnny, the world is less great with you gone.
dirkbag22 2 years ago
I just read that at 1:35 Johnny turns his head towards the balcony at Kris, because ABC told him not to say 'I wish I was stoned' But the man in black did it anyway, hell yeah!
