You Aussies out there thinking we are paranoid about you stealing our stuff, what happened to Phar Lap? and Pavlova (it has been proved that the NZ Edmonds cookbook printed it in 1926 and australia 1929) Crowded House, Split Endz, and Dragon? BTW this is mainly aimed at ACDCisMYlyf, Protect your country? its our country that needs protecting we have the brains to invent the greatest things in history but we don't have the brawn to keep it here
@GetBentley I understand that the Edmonds cookbook printed prior to 1930 included a 'meringue cake', not a 'pavlova'. From what I've read on the topic (being a passionate Pavlova lover ^^) NZ and Aus jointly developed the idea with a NZ lady submitting the meringue cake, and an Aus chef in Perth taking the idea of the meringue cake, making a few adjustments, and naming it a 'Pavlova'.
Nope, Anna Pavlova visited New Zealand and Australia in 1926, as a global tour. While she was staying in Wellington, the head chef at her hotel created a meringue cake dish, decorated with Kiwifruit, and presented it to her. She liked so much he told her he would name it after her. In 1935 Bert Sachse, of Perth, took the recipe and promoted it as his creation on his menu at the Esplanade Hotel. If you need more confirmation, I suggest you get in contact with Prof. Helen Leach at Otago University
I'm not going to bother a Prof personally when there's plenty on info around on what she & others have already said on the topic.
The story that it was a NZ chef in 1926 came not from Prof Leach, but from Pavlova's biography, and the thing about biographies is that they tend to be based on the memory of the person being written about. Apart from this one mention there seems to be no other evidence of this incident with a chef in NZ in 1926.
australianflavour. net has a good timeline on the development of "Pavlova" - bearing in mind that a number of different recipes at the time were named in an attempt to honour the dancer.
On the whole of it, for accuracy purposes, I think that it could be said that the Meringue cake is NZs invention, and what we know as Pavlova is a variation of it.
PS - Phar Lap wasn't stolen, he was purchased, by an American. If NZ wanted to keep him as your own you shouldn't have sold him ^^.
One last note and then I'm leaving the topic alone. A book review by Susette Goldsmith from the NZ Listener of "The Pavlova Story" comments that while the Australian version of Pavlova was attributed to Bert Sachse of Perth in 1935, a cake titled "Festival" being a Meringue cake (ie two meringues together) with cream, nuts and cherries was published by the NZ Dairy Exporter Annual in 1929.
Forgive me, but I'm not a Pavlova fanatic to the point where I'll shell out money for the book ^^.
Prof. Helen Leach is a food historian, specialising in New Zealand foods, so of course, she is particularly interested in the Pavlova story, I'd say if anyone could tell you the earliest confirmed recipe, it would be her, I got my information from her, and she was only too happy to help.
to be honest Toyota would have desgined both for both countries. Australia and NZ would both use Utes, and use the term Bugger! I only said NZ stole it cos or the fuckin NZers are sayin it, and i like to protect my country! so really! all you kiwis shutup and stop obsessing over Australia steling stuff! like wtf! we all have a common enemy and thats USA! fuckin ANZACS for life!!! stop sulking!!!!
