I was unable to pay attention to what you were saying because I was too busy trying to work out if you have an English accent or an Australian accent...
I saw the movie and she wasn't a big shot singer person she was a poor waitress so I thought that was a nice compromise to all the idiots who think that being a black maid is racist.
How many times have you had skittles thrown out a school bus at you and been told to get out of the city you grew up in because of your color? How many times have you had groups of people shun you because you were the wrong color? How many times have you not even bothered trying out for a play because there were no parts for your color?
This is the life I grew up with, and I am white.
I am the minority in my neighborhood.
The only thing keeping racism alive is people like you.
As African Americans we don't want to see our first princess to be a slave. That's a sterotype of blacks being low class and Maddy is a rascist name for blacks it's like her name was Sarama but when they took her from Africa they called her Maddy. We don't want her having to sever white people because she's viewed as being a nigger. she has no rights because of her color. We been througth slavery and racism already we don't want to see a reflection of it in a disney movie.
And I've met someone called Maddy, I imagine she's not planning to change it anytime soon. Also Maid's aren't slave's. It's a paid job, more then what cinderalla got. Actually with her new role Tiana pretty much has the same job only in a different work situation. Hell she has two job's now!
Yeah but Cinderella was a maid because of her stepmother's envey but for an african american in the 1920's she is veiwed badly on mostly whites. There were No Blacks Allowed' in places. And if Disney went with the old idea to make it real then she would be treated badly by every one because of her color. She would not get fair pay as a white.
And blacks even today go througth racism it's still out there. You see it in the media. And our image isn't always good. We're still tryin to over come.
Why do people assume that if she had been a maid Disney would have go the neo-realism root?
Also I've been raised in a multicultural City and if you went up to a person of African origin there with your agument they'd roll their eye's at you. It's a Kid's movie.
stop turning it into a perverse mascot to a movement that was won fourty years ago when the reason racism hasn't gone away is because EVERYONE keep's using the term's 'White, Black', Us, Them' and won't shut up about it.
It's Disney not whites just disney. I saw fantasia were there was a slave girl with nappy hair. I saw Dumbo where the blacks said "we never learn to read or write."
In the jungle book the apes sounded black. And there are other companies with childeren shows that are racist and not just to blacks. I'm not sayin whites are racist or youself. I'm just neverous to see to how Disney will view us again. Will it be almost like before or better. So Im glad they changed it.
In fact, I preferred Maddie more. Even though I'm used to it now, Tiana kinda seemed kinda...tacky when I first heard it. Also, It's not slavery. In fact, it's rather accurate considering the time period. And obviously, you don't know a lot about New Orleans. Yes, they did have Black only signs, but it was a lot more lax than most people think.
Hell, there were more black people owning slaves in Louisiana than any other state. And even so, it's a different time period all together.
~ Continued ~ instead they have to come up with ideas themselves... And frankly, they stink at that... I'm glad they brought back the old composers to do the music (Alan Menken?)... Brings some of the old quality back to the movies... thank God! I'll cross my fingers for this movie...
*jumping up and down!* Alice I love you!! Your points are the exact same as mine! You're so incredible! :D
That being said, I think Disney should just have taken the chance and made the movie the way they wanted from the beginning... Seriously... that's one of the biggest problems with Disney... They want to be safe... they never take any chances, but stick with the obviously safe... And that's why they are failing now... they are running out of old classics they can remake and ~ Continues ~
It's great that there's going to be a black princess but I just can't stand the fact that people are getting so upset over the smallest details. I agree with what most people are saying: it's so annoying that if maddie were a white chamermaid no one would give a damn even if she was asian or maybe even jewish, But because she's black if she was a chambermaid it would be offensive.
seriously its so flippin annoying when everyone complains about things being racist when there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.. i actually want to see this movie and if people keep messing with this then we'll be stuck with this new disney crap and lose everything that we grew up with.. i think this is gonna be our last chance to bring it back and if everyone keeps screwing it over... what then?

I'm black, but some of my fellow blacks only know how to fight. they don't know a thing about acceptance and being civilized and showing some discipline.
I do agree the name change or the fact that she was going to be a maid chamber was not necessary to change. However, I do agree that she should have a black prince. In every other Disney fairytale the princess had a prince of that look like them ( race) so shouldnt the first black princess have a black prince to? Other then that I think people are making a big fuss about nothing.
Are we counting Atlantis or the Little Mermaid? Because the girl in Atlantis (forgot her name) wasn't White but Milo was. And Ariel was a completely different species from Eric. Oh, and the Beast wasn't pretty until the last five minutes, so it's not like he and Belle looked alike. And in both of the Pocahontas movies she ended up with a White guy, even turning down a fellow American Indian in the first movie. Also, Esmeralda and Phoebus were in totally different classes.
I'm not too sure becausse, fater a while of all the flip flopping during the making of the movie, I stopped following it, but I think the whole "white prince" thing was a misunderstanding. From the first pictures of the prince and even in the videos today, yes he has lighter skin than her, and in some light by some eyes he might seem white, but really he's just a lighter shade of black.
For instance, if example of similar Disney cartoons is needed, take a look at the old cartoon, the Proud Family. Princess Tiana and the Frog Prince's skin can be related to Trudy and Oscar Proud, but with gender reversal

If it stayed as "The White House" people would say something, but if it was changed to something stupid like "The Black House" people would say "Why does it have to be black?"
And I agree about the name. What the hell? How is Maddie a slave name? It's short for Madison or Madeline, isn't it?
Fucking liberals. Liberalism is a mental disorder.
You people wanna know what's racist? A laundry hamper. There's a basket for WHITES, and a basket for COLORS. *eyeroll* Wonder when some idiots are gonna change that.
When i mean why does Tiana has to be like that I mean, I cannot understand why she has to have special treatment and not be like Snow white and Cinderalla, and end up a princess
What i don't get is why everyone wants to hear the same story over and over again. I am glad they changed the chambermaid stuff not because she is black, but because that story as already been told. why is ranting about changes they only know about because of wikipedia? lord knows if that is even legit information. who cares if they changed it? that is what happens, they are changing rapunzel and no one is crying about that.
Honestly I know when I read it on Wikipedia, I was thinking. 'Why don't they just call it the frog prince' for thats what the plot seems to be more like that. Than the current title the princess and the frog.
When I think of the name Maddie I usually think that its short for Madison, and most likely kids will think that too. It seems adults forgot about simple innocent minds who will be watching this...for adult issues, and dare do I say this...excuses.
People are going to complain either way some will complain about why she has those features and people would complain if they gave her the same fascil features as Cinderella. If you look at all Disney princesses they all have the fascil features of that ethnicity. Mulan's eyes slant a bit but guess what so do the people's eyes she is based on. I also don't get where the big butt thing came since the only pictures I've seen her in were of her in a gown.
There have also been complaints about her looks such as her lips and her butt. Some women complained why couldn't she look normal. She looks beautiful to me.
she needs to have there ethinic makeup big lips curly hair dark skin i've seen black dolls with straight hair & blue eyes :( look up older black characters (blackface the characters from warner brothers film/tv shows you can't blame disney for not doing this early) they started this in 2006 and her butt isn't big its normal unlike the other disney nicole riche look alikes there wayyy to thin its bad on girls we already have actors /singers like sticks. LOTS!!! people want 2d films agian
This movie is considered very racist which I don't understand but if you haven't seen this movie check it out. Maddy was a perfect name for the princess. Since it is set in New Orleans which was fonded by the French Maddy is almost the Americanized version of Madaline
So the reason they changed the name Maddy to Tiana (which is probably more racist in my opinion but whatever) is because of a little fil called Gone With The Wind. One of the characters in the movie is called Manny (which isn't her real name f.y.i) who is a slave. Now manny is a term for mom/nanny and that is not her real name. The role on the manny is to care and look after the child and also mother them at the same time.
Sorry if I'm wrong but by judging by your accent you live or you are from the United Kingdom, so you might not know why every little thing in this move is being picked apart.
I am excited for this movie but I think that Disney shouldn't have a black princess just to have one.
umm yes we do theres black people in britian you know were happy handrawn films with randy newman doing the music the dictors & writers of the little mermaid Aladin and the head of disney & pixar studios been the producer they got the best of the best working on this and they have been working on this for a looong time this is why most countrys in the world hate US f**kin up great things like this for no reason we don't find a racist thing in obama been your new president we are happy for you
I could say that because you are British, you write like a toddler, but I won't. Because, unlike yourself, I'm not stupid enough to not understand that the original source of fuckupness is the US. Disney was founded in the US. Without the US there would be no Disney. Strange paradox there, right? Great works of the written word were created by British authors, so obviously not all of the British are illiterate. In other words, such erratic prejudice shall not be displayed by myself.
There are many subtle connotations regarding the handling of race that get people worked up. I would rather see a black prince myself. The reason being that in cartoons today, it seems minority characters never hook up with anyone of the same race. The "logic" being that "those kind" of people should stick with their own kind and that's racist. But if a white boy and girl hook up, it's just boy and girl and not social commentary of how politically correct miscegenation is.
I think it's great that a black princess, and a white prince are together because it's a reflection of interracial couples which are very common in America (and this is an american fairytale so it fits), i just personally would like to see this situation in reverse as well. it would be nice to see a black prince, and a white princess together, maybe one day huh?
Whats so funny is that everyone is making a fuss about the first black princess being a good image for black young girls and now finally every girl has a princess they can relate to when they should realize blacks aren't the only ones who don't have a princess (or didn't) because Latino's don't have one either. Jasmine is middle easturn, Mulan is chinese, and Pocahontas is native american, so hopefully in the future there will be one for them too.
I'm excited myself about this movie, especially being an illustrator and all.I believe there is a time and space for everything. Various portrayal of blacks and African Americans (yes they are different)were statistically shown with stereotypes and that's how people all over the world view it.Honestly if you haven't experienced it from that perspective you can't talk.I know Disney damn good but taking suggestions aren't bad for them either.I hope black girls see possibilities and their beauty.
I remeber on Disney channel they made a live action movie of Cinderella with Brandy as Cinderella, a black singer, and if I'm not mistaken, the prince was an Asian guy. So you're so right it's stupid that there were complaining about this princess being black and the prince being white!
by the way, anyone else remember that Cinderella Movie? (^_^)
As an African American female I have to say that they have taken a perfectly good movie and turned it into complete BS. When the idea first came out I was THRILLED! There is so much that could have been done with the original concept. But then people just had to put their two cents in there instead of letting disney do what they do! Its terrible. I hope there will still be something worth watching by 2009.
Just like you are entitled to your opinion so are they!
If people are complaining about things so what? Don't let it piss you off too! You guys gotta realize that if things were diverse in america from the beginning these things people are "complaining about" wouldn't be an issue. People won't compain about these these for eternity. Its just people who are still sensitive about how blacks are portrayed in the media. Please give em a break.
you know what, I thought about this a bit more. I sympathize with those who are offended. But on the other hand, perhaps people have sat around and "waited" for disney to make a black princess when they could have got together, built an animation studio and done it themselves.
Its gone on for far too long and as she said, these nitpickings are just outrageous. But people are so afraid of looking racist that theyll change a work of art into total crap as long it doesnt offend some hypersensitive racist blacks. Yes, racism works both ways. Blacks didnt care about Snow White and Cinderella being servants, why should we care about Tiana?
As was mentioned, it makes a BETTER STORY! And this is our LAST CHANCE to bring 2-D back--it can be nothing less than the BEST. D:<
Originally, when it was called The Frog Princess and she was a chambermaid, I thought the movie would based on fairytale of the same name where she would help the prince with 3 tasks and at the end she would transform back into a human. They get married, blah, blah, blah. I find that story far more interesting than The Frog Prince.
I've been pissed off the fact that people have been getting mad at some dumb crap. Then some are complaining about the firefly and they're just jumping to conclusion.
I've been shutting up alot of people who couldn't give a better explanation of why they disagree about this movie. What I think about the movie I think it's based off the Frog Prince. I can't believe people are whining because the prince isn't black wtf. I agree with you ignorance/bigotry pisses me off
The way I see it, make the movie how you want it and if the NAACP feels like being a bitch about it tell them to shove the stick they have up their collective asses a little further.
And I might not be black but I have dark skin and curly hair and when I was little there was not ONE princess I could really dress up as.
I would LOVE to dress up as Maddie, the black chambermaid-turned-princess for halloween.
I never cared about the princess's colour or race as a child.Where I live people use racism as a scapgoat when they've done something wrong.
A black woman got a parking ticket for being five min over time once. She then started to shout at the man saying things "It's because I'm black isn't it?"
I really can't speak out about things like that since I'm white there for anything I say or comment about is classed as racist when I bring these things up to people. I wish I was bloody joking ¬¬
Amen to that. I live in North Dakota so theres not much opportunity to witness these things, but my bf from Louisiana sees that shit all the time there. Its total crap.
I am black and I agree with you 100%. It's totally racist that they're treating her any different than any of the other disney princesses. If you're offended by stupid things that aren't even racist unless you dig too deep into them. DON'T SEE THE MOVIE!
I agree with Rasmus. American people see racism everywhere. I'm sick of being black and have people being "socially aware" near me. >=\
I've already written this on one vid about the film, but once again, I think it's beautiful and he has a new orleans accent, what's so wrong with that? People should stop being so sensitive and stop being paranoid about being called black, especially if you are....and yes i am b-l-a-c-k...
People (especially in America) see racism everywhere. No matter what the role in a movie is, people will see the ethnically different character being mistreated in one way or another.
What's wrong with a black chambermaid? SHE is the one who will get the prince, SHE is the one who'll get her kindness rewarded, SHE is the one who'll live happily ever after
I swear, if Lion King movie were created in 2008 instead of 1994, people would complain about Scar having darker fur than the other lions
i like black people they are nice people i have listein to rap and reggie i can listen to black but censorship is mess everthing up i think should go with comment disney cartoon should come back but thx bullshit of the cgi and live action we need cartoon it art and usa they can fuck off and die :)

Fucking liberals. Liberalism is a mental disorder.

You people wanna know what's racist? A laundry hamper. There's a basket for WHITES, and a basket for COLORS. *eyeroll* Wonder when some idiots are gonna change that.

Thank you. I'm black and I have to say that the original was MUCH BETTER!
Cinderalla
Snow White
they ALL HAD TO start like that..
Why does Tiana have to be like that. That is so gay. YOu know they are RUINING the magic of disney films. ahhh! and messing up the ORIGINAL STORY!
U see that is why It has taking A LONG TIME for there to be a black princess. .. but that is my opinion. Anyway, it looks it will fine
dahottoneisitachi 2 years ago
When i mean why does Tiana has to be like that I mean, I cannot understand why she has to have special treatment and not be like Snow white and Cinderalla, and end up a princess
dahottoneisitachi 2 years ago
What i don't get is why everyone wants to hear the same story over and over again. I am glad they changed the chambermaid stuff not because she is black, but because that story as already been told. why is ranting about changes they only know about because of wikipedia? lord knows if that is even legit information. who cares if they changed it? that is what happens, they are changing rapunzel and no one is crying about that.

Sorry, but pixar and 3-d is what the fans want.
When you use that term you are really talking about yourself as a "fan" and about maybe 25 other people who just want to be purists.
utubeelliott 3 years ago
Trust me there are more then 25 people who would agree with my "opinion".
Sounds like your a pixar "fan" but I respect that your a "fan" and I'll leave it at that. ^^

I also don't get where the big butt thing came since the only pictures I've seen her in were of her in a gown.
angelwitch113 3 years ago
There have also been complaints about her looks such as her lips and her butt. Some women complained why couldn't she look normal. She looks beautiful to me.
angelwitch113 3 years ago
she needs to have there ethinic makeup big lips curly hair dark skin i've seen black dolls with straight hair & blue eyes :( look up older black characters (blackface the characters from warner brothers film/tv shows you can't blame disney for not doing this early) they started this in 2006 and her butt isn't big its normal unlike the other disney nicole riche look alikes there wayyy to thin its bad on girls we already have actors /singers like sticks. LOTS!!! people want 2d films agian

Why in the world are people looking at her butt?! Pervs!

This movie is considered very racist which I don't understand but if you haven't seen this movie check it out. Maddy was a perfect name for the princess. Since it is set in New Orleans which was fonded by the French Maddy is almost the Americanized version of Madaline
angelwitch113 3 years ago
So the reason they changed the name Maddy to Tiana (which is probably more racist in my opinion but whatever) is because of a little fil called Gone With The Wind. One of the characters in the movie is called Manny (which isn't her real name f.y.i) who is a slave. Now manny is a term for mom/nanny and that is not her real name. The role on the manny is to care and look after the child and also mother them at the same time.

Good rant.
Sorry if I'm wrong but by judging by your accent you live or you are from the United Kingdom, so you might not know why every little thing in this move is being picked apart.
I am excited for this movie but I think that Disney shouldn't have a black princess just to have one.

umm yes we do theres black people in britian you know were happy handrawn films with randy newman doing the music the dictors & writers of the little mermaid Aladin and the head of disney & pixar studios been the producer they got the best of the best working on this and they have been working on this for a looong time this is why most countrys in the world hate US f**kin up great things like this for no reason we don't find a racist thing in obama been your new president we are happy for you
vegrox 3 years ago
I could say that because you are British, you write like a toddler, but I won't. Because, unlike yourself, I'm not stupid enough to not understand that the original source of fuckupness is the US. Disney was founded in the US. Without the US there would be no Disney. Strange paradox there, right? Great works of the written word were created by British authors, so obviously not all of the British are illiterate. In other words, such erratic prejudice shall not be displayed by myself.

Love your accent.
EnchantedMagickLove 3 years ago 2
There are many subtle connotations regarding the handling of race that get people worked up. I would rather see a black prince myself. The reason being that in cartoons today, it seems minority characters never hook up with anyone of the same race. The "logic" being that "those kind" of people should stick with their own kind and that's racist. But if a white boy and girl hook up, it's just boy and girl and not social commentary of how politically correct miscegenation is.
sPitternaut 3 years ago
I think it's great that a black princess, and a white prince are together because it's a reflection of interracial couples which are very common in America (and this is an american fairytale so it fits), i just personally would like to see this situation in reverse as well. it would be nice to see a black prince, and a white princess together, maybe one day huh?
axeldiz 3 years ago 3
Whats so funny is that everyone is making a fuss about the first black princess being a good image for black young girls and now finally every girl has a princess they can relate to when they should realize blacks aren't the only ones who don't have a princess (or didn't) because Latino's don't have one either. Jasmine is middle easturn, Mulan is chinese, and Pocahontas is native american, so hopefully in the future there will be one for them too.
axeldiz 3 years ago 2
I'm excited myself about this movie, especially being an illustrator and all.I believe there is a time and space for everything. Various portrayal of blacks and African Americans (yes they are different)were statistically shown with stereotypes and that's how people all over the world view it.Honestly if you haven't experienced it from that perspective you can't talk.I know Disney damn good but taking suggestions aren't bad for them either.I hope black girls see possibilities and their beauty.
jazziejade16 3 years ago
I remeber on Disney channel they made a live action movie of Cinderella with Brandy as Cinderella, a black singer, and if I'm not mistaken, the prince was an Asian guy. So you're so right it's stupid that there were complaining about this princess being black and the prince being white!
by the way, anyone else remember that Cinderella Movie? (^_^)
misukiyuki 3 years ago
bits and pieces but I do remember a black cinderella when I was a kid. And funnily enough I never even thought twice about the fact she was black :/
people need to remember this is a kids movie! and kids don't care about the same stuff sdults do.

You are so right. By the by, her name is pronounced "Tee-ah-nah."
crazkid86 3 years ago
As an African American female I have to say that they have taken a perfectly good movie and turned it into complete BS. When the idea first came out I was THRILLED! There is so much that could have been done with the original concept. But then people just had to put their two cents in there instead of letting disney do what they do! Its terrible. I hope there will still be something worth watching by 2009.
LuckyduckAlways8 3 years ago
Just like you are entitled to your opinion so are they!
If people are complaining about things so what? Don't let it piss you off too! You guys gotta realize that if things were diverse in america from the beginning these things people are "complaining about" wouldn't be an issue. People won't compain about these these for eternity. Its just people who are still sensitive about how blacks are portrayed in the media. Please give em a break.
tjmovie19 3 years ago
you know what, I thought about this a bit more. I sympathize with those who are offended. But on the other hand, perhaps people have sat around and "waited" for disney to make a black princess when they could have got together, built an animation studio and done it themselves.
tjmovie19 3 years ago

AHHH.
I'm going to kill someone now.
Well, no. I'm not.
GAH. Prejudiced retards.

AlicesTeaCup 3 years ago
Amen to that. I live in North Dakota so theres not much opportunity to witness these things, but my bf from Louisiana sees that shit all the time there. Its total crap.
InvidiaBlue 3 years ago
Short comment.
But.

People should stop being so sensitive and stop being paranoid about being called black, especially if you are....and yes i am b-l-a-c-k...
septembergrey78 3 years ago 3
People (especially in America) see racism everywhere. No matter what the role in a movie is, people will see the ethnically different character being mistreated in one way or another.
What's wrong with a black chambermaid? SHE is the one who will get the prince, SHE is the one who'll get her kindness rewarded, SHE is the one who'll live happily ever after
I swear, if Lion King movie were created in 2008 instead of 1994, people would complain about Scar having darker fur than the other lions
