I know exactly what he meant. He meant that we needed to lose our dependence on foreign oil so that we do not have to go over their and fight to get it for our Country if the Saudi's and others cut us off. That is what he meant. The part that has people thinking we went to Iraq for oil was when Saddam in 1990-91 invaded Kuwait, and then was going to try to control the oil at the Port of Hormuze, where Tankers get filled. He used a very bad way to say it though. He cleared it up, but to late.

no. what he was saying was our dependence on Middle Eastern oil is what allowed the tyranical government to come to power. We doomed it after WWI when we basically drew lines on a map to create new countries in the Middle East. what needs to happen is the formation of Kurdistan, but Iraq, Iran, and Turkey won't give up the land.

What McCain meant wasn't exactly rocket science. If you think oil money to Saudi Arabia and Iran helped fund terrorism and that we had to go Iraq and Afghanistan to fight this terrorism, it follows that oil independence would eliminate money for terrorists and eventually terrorists. Extremely simplistic, yes, but that was McCain's line of reasoning.

McCain's wording may have been a gaffe, but only because of our asinine sound-bite political culture devoid of any deep thought on issues.

Of course it's not rocket science, it's petroleum politics. There's a simple equation here, McCain said he wants energy self sufficiency so that we don't have to fight in the middle east again for energy that we are generating at home. With statements like that we better brush up on our rocket science.
