I have seen this knot come loose on a hook while it was laying on the boat driving across the water. It is not even a knot and use it at your own risk. My advice is learn how to snell a hook right.
You need to ensure the snood only just passes through the eye twice, some hooks have eyes that are too big or fishermen use traces to light for this knot to work. Personally, I have tied over a million of these hooks and have not had slippage. The commercial fishermen in New Zealand all use this knot for snapper fishing without problems. Tens of millions of hooks! No problems
This is not the correct way to snell a hook. the end part is what is causing the pull outs. instead of going through once then wrapping, you need to go through the eye twice in different directions making a loop next to the shaft. use this loop to wrap the shank and 2 pieces of line with coils, then pull standing end snug, followed by pulling tag end and standing end in seperate directions until tight. then you will have a %100 strength knot.
I have used this knot on thousands of fishhooks over the years going back to the mid-90s. It has never failed me. It's also much, much easier to tie than a standard snell knot with a loop. If the end is causing the knot to come unraveled, it means you're leaving the tag end too long.
The only thing I would add is make sure you start your wraps so the line goes over the solid part of the eye. That prevents the blunt end of the hook from digging into the line.
Thanks, I'm going to try this one out. I learned a different technique and I've noticed that it tends to slip under heavy load. Perhaps it is my leader is too big, not sure. I generally use 25lb mono as my leader line for catfishing.
@murray8144 I have always used it on 50 to 80 pound line with no problems. We have tied half a million traces (snoods) over the last twenty years with this knot for our customers and had no complaints of it coming undone.
@murray8144 What you said is very true. Just tie the knot with high lb test, once tied put backward pressure on the main line and it will slacken off.
@murray8144 What you said is very true. Just tie the knot with high lb test, once tied put backward pressure on the main line and it will slacken off.
Maybe it will stay tight w/~10lb test, but I just tried it w/ 80lb mono & it springs loose as soon as you release the pressure... 'Knot' on my boat...
HEY PAUL Mate thanks a lot for that very usefull instruction, ive had a few people tried to teach me that snell knot and ive looked at a few other sights but for me personaly their way was very complex and i just couldnt replicate it but your way makes perfect sense and i got it first time, for me knots are always a little more difficult because being a left hander im right brained so its always the opposite way but youve just made it very easy for me so Thanks my Kiwi comrade.
The snell knot is a hitch knot used to attach an eyed fishing hook to fishing line. It passes through the eye of the hook, but primarily attaches to the shaft. It is a very secure knot, but because it only easily tied using the near end as the working end, it is only used to attach a hook to a leader, rather than directly to the main line.
Sorry I have to disagree this is not snelling a hook.
At best its a modification of the snell
Snelling was first used to attach eyeless hooks to line how would you snell an eyeless or spade end hook with this method?
Impossible
Really when you pass yourself off as a professional you should make sure your info is correct
In the snell both the leader and the tab end are held under all the wrappings at best this could only be described as a poor or maybe lazy/quick/abbreviated snell.
Every commercial fisherman who fishes snapper in New Zealand has used this knot for the last 30 years, they all call it a snell knot and always have. It may be slightly different than the snell used for eyeless hooks - but is is a snell nevertheless.
Are you in some kind of a purity of snell knot association or do you have some other claim to being a keeper of all things snell?
No its quite simple I was looking for a knot for eyeless hooks and a fishing book mentioned the method of tying eyeless hook was called snelling.
So I go looking for visuals on snelling to find two examples claiming to be snells but cannot be used on eyeless hooks therefore cannot really be snells.
I understand how you have come to call it a snell, because everybody around you calls it that.
Only the originator gives out its name, you modify the knot you modify the name.
Were you reading a fishing book a hundred years old? I haven't even seen eyeless hooks for sale in the tackle shops in my lifetime & I have been fishing for 45 years. What you see in this video IS a Snell knot by modern definition & all pre-tied Snelled leaders are tied with this knot. Eyed hooks were invented to replace eyeless hooks a lifetime ago. The knot changed because all the hooks did.
Most things today don't even remotely those from a century ago except in name.
Im guessing you tie it to a swivel or something. And since you have to have a long tag line coming out of the front of the eye, then you wouldnt be able to tie this knot with a hook on the end of your line that is spooled on your rod then right?
I used this knot for thirty years commercial fishing (so has every other commercial longliner in New Zealand) and it has never let me down. I use it because of it's reliability and speed of tying, I can tie 300 snoods an hour with it and have used it hundreds of thousands of times. As for advice on other knots, I haven't tried them because this is the perfect knot for my purposes. The eye on the hook needs to be small - see the video online.
Tried it. And it is wonderful. I even found some size 10 circle hooks. I snelled them you way , and man can a fellow catch pan fish with them. Thanks alot for your advise.
Fantastic finally I understand how to tie a fishing hook that doesn't fall off. I have always had to get a man to help me with tying fishing line finally I don't need one anymore. Hopefully Paul will post a video on how to bait them.
What do you do if the other end of the line is in your fishing reel's spool?

never mind the nay-sayers...I've used this knot for years now...too easy, too good.
Just try teaching the standard "snell" to a child or someone with cold hands..This knot is the best for every day use...hardtimes

Yes. Generally you would snell a hook to a leader then clinch to a swivel. Check out a carolina rig or similar.
