@ RennanizedRen: Your first comment led off with, "when i'm forced to listent to a '60's station. . . " the image of being "forced" to listen to the greatest pop music of all time was YOUR image.
When you can only listen to 60's music when being forced to, then you sir/madam have no taste in music nor musical knowledge at all.. Excuse me for this.. But any argument is invalid. Since the end of the 60s pop musical quality started droppin' dramaticly.. Every decade it started sucking more and more.. Until this day, where pure sh!t comes pouring out of my radio.. (exceptions granted for true originals, still doing their best to make good music of course..)
@low72 I didn't grow up on this stuff though. I grew up on spanish music and the newer stuff. I never listened to stuff like this until a few months ago when I heard this song.
I love this song, but could someone please tell me what is the instrument that plays in the background at 0:44-0:51, and then it's played again at 1:29-1:38. Those are my two favortie parts of this song and I believe that sound is what made this song sound way ahead of its time.
@WASSUMAIER It's an early analog synthesizer. Tones were so hard to match on the later digital synths that folks like Steve Miller and Pink Floyd used to patch their old ones up just for the recording studio and pray they'd hold up for the whole session.
Turtles covered it aint me babe, and I just wanted to share this Dylan cover with ya'll. Its perfect when its cold outside and you have your lover with ya ;)
The guitar solo at the end and the piano transition to Rae's verse was done by some other dudes after the fact. I imagine he made the beat then got a guitar player to get a guitar that had the same sound/pitch/distortion on it and played a solo. For reference, Kanye uses an Ensoniq ASR-10 for sampling and a Akai MPC 2000XL for sequencing and I think for his drums too. I wish I had more room to type it out/was better at explaining what I think he did.
@pureaggression the MBDTF liner notes say "Contains portions of the composition "You Showed Me" written by Gene Clark & Roger McGuinn", and some other stuff about how the copyright was renewed in 1965. I think he is taking the opening guitar sound (maybe w/ the strings at the end of each note or w/e), pitching it differently & using some other effect on it. Then taking that one sound as a note, playing part of it for the loop. So it goes "mmm mmm m mmmmm mmm" not sure how to type that sorry haha
Everyone is saying how great The Turtles were in the day and I think they are a good group too but it is important to say that this version, this cover of a BYRDS song does not hold a candle to the original acoustic demo, with Gene Clark, Jim Mcguinn and David Crosby sharing the lead vocal. The Turtles did a good intepretation but they lost the haunting echo, you can see inside Gene Clarks' soul when he sings this song, written by himself and Jim Mcguinn
@a7x8109 People today are too caught up in their image, "looking tough or being taken seriously", having fame, and producing and selling music that only appeals to wide mass appeal. What the music industry deems financial success. Therefore individual creativity is limited for the sake of widening your profit margins by reaching a larger audience. In some ways, society has regressed and one of the tells is how big of an influence the music industry has on people.
@BrownanDownable When people define themselves as Punk, Hip Hop, Emo, Gangsta, Indie. When most of them don't even play any instruments or sing. Cool song. Timeless. I think "Happy Together" was everyone's favorite and I think it is cool as well, but I've always leaned more towards this song. You know a song is good when people have comments on it even if it is 40 plus years old!
@oxonionian to those who grew up in the era that this masterpiece was released, this song is anything but "long forgotten" as well as the youth of today discovering its beauty right here on You Tube..the only thing that will soon be long forgotten are your comments and opinion on this subject..
What thoughts this song brings back. I was dating this girl back then, she used to wear perfume called "Tigress",I can smell it now in my mind as well as reflect on some fantastic memories from a great time to live, long since gone....
you know they say you only have room for oh so many things in your memory bank , and with all these classic "oldies in my brain , i simply just havent the room to bring any of the music from today in ,
Volman/Kaylan are going to the lake of fire for what they did to De La Soul and creative hip hop. Grasping pigs.
"Volman and Kaylan sued for $2.5 million, but reached an out-of-court settlement for $1.7 million. De La Soul paid $141,666.67 per second to the Turtles for a sliver of a long-forgotten song."
@RennanizedRen, LUCKY you getting to listen to a 60's station for two whole bloody hours!!! I wish our oldies station played 60s's music still. The oldies are considered 80's and 90's now and THAT's the crap they play!!! I'd give ANYTHING to hear music like this on my oldies station!!! And yes, this is an AWESOME song. Hey Turtle Fans, If you like this song, check out " Somewhere Friday Night " by them. Somebody finally posted a video for this on you tube ( been waiting a long time ). This is a performance on " The Barbara McNair TV show in January 1970. It's a lip sync, but it's great.
This song was written by Gene Clark and Roger McGuinn, but they felt it did not fit in with the Byrds sound, so they let it go to other artists, including the Turtles.

@m1kewithaone So have you seen Lillian Sigala lately? With me it was a girl named Mercy. Yup this was definitely a puberty song for me as well as "Undun" by the Guess Who which came out around the same time.
@ChowHallCommando ha i forgot that song! "she's come undone...." and then in "70 they did "american woman" right? oh, i just heard the electric prunes "too much to dream last night" and something else before i go, and this is very special, very obscrur (except on u tube!) not too many people know about the band called '"Paris" from 1976 and the album "big town 2061" some of the members came form fleetwood mac, jethro tull, and blue oyster cult! it is as awsome now, as it was then, way ahead :)
"You Showed Me" was written by Jim McGuinn and Gene Clark of another fantastic US ,British Invasion influenced band ,The Byrds, in 1964. The Turtles recorded and released this slower version as a single in 1969.
The Byrds gave this song to the Turtles. When they played it - their was a malfunction with the keyboards. The tempo was supposed to be twice this speed. But The Turtles liked the tempo just fine played at this speed. What a great decision.
