  • The song is so slow and sensual.............

  • I fell in love for the first time to this very song. I can't think of a better one to do that to!

  • @ RennanizedRen: Your first comment led off with, "when i'm forced to listent to a '60's station. . . " the image of being "forced" to listen to the greatest pop music of all time was YOUR image.

  • When you can only listen to 60's music when being forced to, then you sir/madam have no taste in music nor musical knowledge at all.. Excuse me for this.. But any argument is invalid. Since the end of the 60s pop musical quality started droppin' dramaticly.. Every decade it started sucking more and more.. Until this day, where pure sh!t comes pouring out of my radio.. (exceptions granted for true originals, still doing their best to make good music of course..)

  • <3

  • @low72 I didn't grow up on this stuff though. I grew up on spanish music and the newer stuff. I never listened to stuff like this until a few months ago when I heard this song.

  • FINALLY i found it!!!

  • THANK YOU !

  • i think maybe kanye just took the melodies from that part of the song and recorded instrumentation live

  • I love this song, but could someone please tell me what is the instrument that plays in the background at 0:44-0:51, and then it's played again at 1:29-1:38. Those are my two favortie parts of this song and I believe that sound is what made this song sound way ahead of its time.

    Thanks in advance!

  • @WASSUMAIER It's an early analog synthesizer. Tones were so hard to match on the later digital synths that folks like Steve Miller and Pink Floyd used to patch their old ones up just for the recording studio and pray they'd hold up for the whole session.

  • @romac53 Thanks, yeah I read that it was a Moog synthesizer and it was considered quite futuristic at the time.

  • God I love this song. So dreamy. Turtle love.

  • Love it! Was listening to The Lightning Seeds cover and had to hear the original. One of the best Turtles songs.

  • I think U2 owes The Turtles ONE HECK OF A RESIDUAL CHECK!

Listen to U2's "The Playboy Mansion" from their Poop album.

    - G

  • Turtles covered it aint me babe, and I just wanted to share this Dylan cover with ya'll. Its perfect when its cold outside and you have your lover with ya ;)

Just type in - Lay lady Lay by Magnet

  • this song is so fucking good

  • The guitar solo at the end and the piano transition to Rae's verse was done by some other dudes after the fact. I imagine he made the beat then got a guitar player to get a guitar that had the same sound/pitch/distortion on it and played a solo. For reference, Kanye uses an Ensoniq ASR-10 for sampling and a Akai MPC 2000XL for sequencing and I think for his drums too. I wish I had more room to type it out/was better at explaining what I think he did.

  • @pureaggression the MBDTF liner notes say "Contains portions of the composition "You Showed Me" written by Gene Clark & Roger McGuinn", and some other stuff about how the copyright was renewed in 1965. I think he is taking the opening guitar sound (maybe w/ the strings at the end of each note or w/e), pitching it differently & using some other effect on it. Then taking that one sound as a note, playing part of it for the loop. So it goes "mmm mmm m mmmmm mmm" not sure how to type that sorry haha

  • Everyone is saying how great The Turtles were in the day and I think they are a good group too but it is important to say that this version, this cover of a BYRDS song does not hold a candle to the original acoustic demo, with Gene Clark, Jim Mcguinn and David Crosby sharing the lead vocal. The Turtles did a good intepretation but they lost the haunting echo, you can see inside Gene Clarks' soul when he sings this song, written by himself and Jim Mcguinn

  • can someone explain what it is that Kanye sampled in this song cuz i can't recognize it

  • @made4djing thank you, so kanye used the pitch of the voice in this song to create the guitar riff in gorgeous?

  • @ace24wolf Yep pretty much. I think it was genius just like the other samples on MBDTF. It showed me a lot of new artist and songs, like this.

  • I saw them in Reno in the mid 2000's. Got to hang out with them after the show. Quite fun. Me, my buddy Pat and Flo and Eddie.

  • great music from them.but don't use them in hip hop tunes.they don't sound great to -gether(enough said).

  • @Proudkansan08 If it makes you feel any better, it was a XM station, so I don't get to listen to it again. :P

  • I gotta go Turles on this one.

  • I might be uncool but I love The Turtles!.

  • I'm only 14 (almost 15) and I absolutely love this song... What has happened to great music?!

  • @a7x8109 People today are too caught up in their image, "looking tough or being taken seriously", having fame, and producing and selling music that only appeals to wide mass appeal. What the music industry deems financial success. Therefore individual creativity is limited for the sake of widening your profit margins by reaching a larger audience. In some ways, society has regressed and one of the tells is how big of an influence the music industry has on people.

  • @BrownanDownable When people define themselves as Punk, Hip Hop, Emo, Gangsta, Indie. When most of them don't even play any instruments or sing. They still define themselves as such, because that is the music they feel is the non suckiest Genre on earth and that people should only listen to the genre of music they prefer. Me. I just listen to everything. And if it sucks, I just don't listen to it, whatever genre it is.

  • @BrownanDownable thats a good motto

  • Thanks for posting this

  • @5jerry1 Meaning I wasn't completely into the '60s, and that was all that was playing. I like to switch it up.

  • I have a record by The Byrds with this song, predating this; I don't know which I prefer, they;re both excellent.

  • Thank you! I love this song and always loved everything the Turtles recorded but never realized this was a Turtles hit! Too much sixties exploration I guess!

  • Damn, Kanye flipped this beautifully. Just listen to the Gorgeous instrumental. Fuck. Amazing songs.

  • @DanCiTi I don't hear the guitar lick West used in this song, is it from a different version??

  • @DanCiTi : You ain't lyin.'

  • @DanCiTi he sure did. gorgeous is a great song! respect to both!

  • @DanCiTi Kanye did this? why'd you have to ruin this for me.

  • @DanCiTi Prince Paul flipped it too on De La Soul's Transmitting Live From Mars.

  • Cool song. Timeless. I think "Happy Together" was everyone's favorite and I think it is cool as well, but I've always leaned more towards this song. You know a song is good when people have comments on it even if it is 40 plus years old!

  • @darklordojeda No. Meaning that or nothing. I didn't really mind though.

  • @oxonionian to those who grew up in the era that this masterpiece was released, this song is anything but "long forgotten" as well as the youth of today discovering its beauty right here on You Tube..the only thing that will soon be long forgotten are your comments and opinion on this subject..

  • What thoughts this song brings back. I was dating this girl back then, she used to wear perfume called "Tigress",I can smell it now in my mind as well as reflect on some fantastic memories from a great time to live, long since gone....

  • you know they say you only have room for oh so many things in your memory bank , and with all these classic "oldies in my brain , i simply just havent the room to bring any of the music from today in ,

  • Kanye sample to this was great!

  • @RavieNicole1 Fuck Kanye

  • De La Soul got sued for using this for a skit ?(Transmitting Live from Mars)

  • *spazzing out over how awesome the turtles are* please, spazz out with me.

  • re-recorded bY "the lightening seeds" Approx1998,

  • Dreamy and cool.

  • Only 86,000 views? There are too many brainwashed "Lady" GaGa fans out there.

  • @oxonionian. While I don't completely agree or disagree with the lawsuit, I'd hardly classify this as a "long-forgotten" song

  • Volman/Kaylan are going to the lake of fire for what they did to De La Soul and creative hip hop. Grasping pigs.

"Volman and Kaylan sued for $2.5 million, but reached an out-of-court settlement for $1.7 million. De La Soul paid $141,666.67 per second to the Turtles for a sliver of a long-forgotten song."

  • LOVE this song... its so haunting

  • When I'm forced to listen to a '60's station for two hours, I'll eventually find something I like. This is one of them. It's awesome.

  • @RennanizedRen forced? as if it's a bad thing?

  • @RennanizedRen

    Forced?

  • @RennanizedRen, LUCKY you getting to listen to a 60's station for two whole bloody hours!!! I wish our oldies station played 60s's music still. The oldies are considered 80's and 90's now and THAT's the crap they play!!! I'd give ANYTHING to hear music like this on my oldies station!!! And yes, this is an AWESOME song. I think that of all the songs from the Turtles I like, this is #1 on my list of favorites, not to mention my 'never get sick of' songs.

  • @RennanizedRen what else you can recommend? thank you

  • @RennanizedRen I didn't know there was such thing as being "forced" to listen to a 60's station? Shit that's my normal radio station

  • De La Soul :D

  • Super Music, is Classica

  • De La Soul caught a lawsuit behind this joint.....

  • I've searched everywhere for this song! I'm glad I've found it!

  • my dad love the turtles BAD

  • prince paul break

  • this doesnt sound anything like gorgeous

  • @TheSuperchicken2000 You have shit music ears then

  • @MonsterInHiding i put this 3 weeks ago, when i heard that the sample shows up at 0:09. but then a couple days later i found out that its at like 1:00 so yaa..

  • @TheSuperchicken2000 aligned to the snare and subtle, an example of an excellent sample. Also as good as So Appalled

  • @TheSuperchicken2000 from 1:00 to 1:16 is the same melody as Cudi's hook. It's not really a sample, but I guess that's where he got that from

  • @Qhall0320 thank you for giving that information, i figured there was another part that they used from this song for Gorgeous but i never really figured it out

  • @tDizzyTV no problem

  • i love the beginning

  • Hey Turtle Fans, If you like this song, check out " Somewhere Friday Night " by them. Somebody finally posted a video for this on you tube ( been waiting a long time ). This is a performance on " The Barbara McNair TV show in January 1970. It's a lip sync, but it's great.

  • Anyone else came here by the video "I like turtles" ?

  • @digitalzocker fuck that kid lol i was trying to find this video and that video keep popping out hahaha

  • mmmm why is there a dislike button?

  • turtles....what a name!

  • I happen to like this love song better than "Happy together"

  • This song was written by Gene Clark and Roger McGuinn, but they felt it did not fit in with the Byrds sound, so they let it go to other artists, including the Turtles.

  • @jimfocus69 its on the byrds album preflyte but it sounds like folk music the way they do it

  • yes i got it !!! the us rap group "brothers uv da blakmarket" sampled this in 93...From classic to another classic

  • Much better than the Byrds version.

  • This is my all time favorite Turtles song. They did so many good songs.

  • Great song.

  • mhmmm..

  • I always picture infidelity - when I hear this song.

  • i can barely hear a thing from this song that was sampled in Gorgeous..

this is more like it: /watch?v=P-IDR1jWKuc ... then FFWD to 1:35

  • The Byrds originally did this song. They wrote it and they did it with a country music feel to it, not nearly as good as the Turtles. This came out in the spring of 1969. You ought to check out " Somewhere Friday Night " for the same kind of feel to this song.

  • @RADRONWHIT The Byrds did this song? You sure? I never heard that one. On what cd is that on?

  • @RADRONWHIT Damn, youre right. I just found that on youtube. Never doubted it for a second. Thanx for the info.

  • can you give me a release date on this tune? thanx

  • @risercurve I was about 12 yrs old so it was around late 69 early 70 if I remember correctly. They played it a lot on Los Angeles radio back then. Great memory!

  • @ChowHallCommando i was thirteen in 68 i lived in san jose elenore was popular, and lilian sigala was was showing me....

  • @m1kewithaone So have you seen Lillian Sigala lately? With me it was a girl named Mercy. Yup this was definitely a puberty song for me as well as "Undun" by the Guess Who which came out around the same time.

  • @ChowHallCommando ha i forgot that song! "she's come undone...." and then in "70 they did "american woman" right? oh, i just heard the electric prunes "too much to dream last night" and something else before i go, and this is very special, very obscrur (except on u tube!) not too many people know about the band called '"Paris" from 1976 and the album "big town 2061" some of the members came form fleetwood mac, jethro tull, and blue oyster cult! it is as awsome now, as it was then, way ahead :)

  • Thank you for posting this song boswell69. It's my favorite song from the Turtles. So beautiful, sweet & haunting in a way.. =)~

  • 1 person didn't listen and repeat!

  • 1 person has never been in love

  • Who taught you how to find great samples?

    Yeezy taught me...

  • what stretch of what highway is that where the photo was taken?

  • Much much better than the original !

  • @betabloca THIS is the original:)

  • @hanakun No, the original was written by Gene Clark and Roger Mcguin of the Byrds and also performed by them.

Look it up here on Youtube.

  • @betabloca Oh...My mistake then...I always thought this was...Thanks for your reply:)

  • Wow... I have this CD...

  • the best ever!

  • Awesome...

  • yeezy taught me

  • Reminds me of Garrison Drive.

  • Reminds my of Garrison Drive .

  • Love it! <3

  • Kanye was here.

  • love it !!

  • reminds me of a hot summer day in the northern CA valley lol,but thats just me.

  • "You Showed Me" was written by Jim McGuinn and Gene Clark of another fantastic US ,British Invasion influenced band ,The Byrds, in 1964. The Turtles recorded and released this slower version as a single in 1969.

  • everything just sounded so much better back then, you cant sound this authentic today no matter what you try or how good you are.

  • you can tell they are influenced by the beatles. god, that genius band influenced everyone...

  • Zombie kid likes this song.

  • Here because of Jesse Perring ...

  • i love this song....

  • Haunting, sexy, timeless, just beautiful....

  • I like turtles

  • Reminds me of sitting across a table from Debbie Lockhart in Art class back in 1967.

  • Turtle soup, yum

  • haunting song.I remember, way back, listening to it on AM radio.

  • Timeless tune, caught my old folks listening to this tune today, probably reminiscing about the days of ol'. LOL.

  • What a classic.

  • The Byrds gave this song to the Turtles. When they played it - their was a malfunction with the keyboards. The tempo was supposed to be twice this speed. But The Turtles liked the tempo just fine played at this speed. What a great decision.

  • Can you say Flo and Eddie?

  • Great song of the late 60s sounds great......this and Happy Together two great great songs.....thanks for posting it...

  • De La Soul - Transmitting Live From Mars , sample

  • @Jimpsterz they sued de la soul 1.7 million dollars just because de la soul used it on an intro on there 3 feet high and rising album back in 1989. to this day i still think the turtles were bang out of order for causing such a controversy over a 60 second sample skit. i think the turtles were more interested in money then the copyright.

  • @all

    ok

  • Great song by The Turtles! Their second best (behind "Happy Together").

Seems like this group was around for only two years and vanished. Whatever happened to them after thir chart successes in the late 1960s?

  • 1:11-1:15 Gorgeous sample

  • I didn't catch the sample at all....

  • @PatrickStreater It's not a sample per say it's more like he took part of the melody and used it as his chorus and background, start listening @1:00

  • @supasweet92 Wow...I hear it now, that is amazing...but I hope Kanye didn't have to pay much for that sample because all he did was take the melody and recreate.

  • @supasweet92 and you are brilliant for catching that

  • @PatrickStreater Me either

  • @Andrelecount1 Listen to it at 1:00 and think of kid cudi's singing

  • @PatrickStreater Yeah i hear it but i wonder how he got it out like i dont know how he did it with the vocals.

  • Supreme Beings of Leisure - Never The Same

  • Ye and Cudi and Turtles = Gorgeous literally on my beautiful dark twisted fantasy.

  • I will never ever let you live this down, down, down. lol GORGEOUS

  • I totally miss this classic tune! Thank you so very much for the upload! :)

  • niggalicious

  • Great harmonization of the voices!!!! this song in general will live for eternity!!! so provocative!!!

  • My fave Turtles song. Used to have that CD.

  • : / why does it not sound like its self... ?

  • I came upon this via several remixes, Wagon Christ, DJ Food etc. Amazing song!

  • Remember the Greatest Hits Album? It went out of style along with intelligent thought and behavior.

  • dope song.sampled alot but nothing beats the original!

  • Gorgeous.....

  • @passionateaboutmusic All Day

  • @passionateaboutmusic Haha yeah. I can't really hear that sampling though... is it just me?

  • What a beautiful song. I absolutely love the keyboard in the beginning!

  • Love this song, thanks for the upload..

  • One of the most beautiful love songs of all time! Thank you for posting this sweet song!

  • Been looking for this for a long time! Thanks so much for the post! Love it!
