a steam engine energizes a crowd like nothing else. not an air show. not a drag race. not a horse race. a old steamer is like a blast from the past. it's like you're seeing a ghost....but it's for real. fantastic.
it's ironic seeing the steamer pulling the diesel. like the older more powerful father leading his son down the railway. some say steam will make a comeback. i'll believe it when i see it, sadly. it's not like the public isn't crying to see them back in service for real.
Another day of chasing is planned for May 2nd as the mighty 844 makes its way through the Feather River Canyon on its way home. We are planning our day with favorite lookout spots, radios, channels, cameras and so on. This time I will prepared with the real video equipment. If you are near Northern California, you may want to make your way to the tracks. I added some links to the notes section. Stay tuned. Randy
Checking the video in the editor, I see two guys with tripods one by the lamp post and other other closer on the sidewalk. I also saw a guy leave on a motorcycle with gear on his back.
There is a guy with a camera on his chest and a beard standing right on the yellow line, I am directly behind that guy to the left, I had a camera with a tripod and a black jacket on and kind of a blue'ish shirt. I had a black jacket on that was un-zipped.
Don't know what digital still cam you have but it got a seriously sharp movie of UP 844-- fantastic closeup shot as she pulled out... stills were great too!! You were talking about the rumble-- that is 486,340 pounds going by (engine), and even the tender behind weighs 421,550 pounds (6200 gallons of oil and 23,500 gallons of water, full)!! Thanks for taking the time to do this and share with the rainfans!!
Thanks. If I knew that I was going to see the train I would of taken my big video and still cameras. But the simple point and shoot Canon SD750 did the trick. I was just a couple feet away! It was very exciting feeling the power of that engine.
may not have much to do with ham radio randy, but it some how all ties in. it may be that all the bits to do with team work, i e like the rail tracks, the smooth way it runs on the tracks, like the bits of radio gear. the radio, antenna, coax, swr meter, ext. nice train
Possibly, but I'm not a serious train nut. You can use a standard scanner and load in the rail frequencies. The are about 100+ standard rail channels. Do some googling on rail - train frequencies and railroads in your area. You should be able to find some info to program into a scanner. Also program in 146.49 to pickup any local ham radio operators that are following the trains. Randy
HAHA! Nice shot of Ed at 1:10. :p

Can you maybe make some videos about two-way radio, as used commercially by companies like the railroad?
