Latching can produce some pretty thick locs but you do it by semi-freeforming. I started my bro's locs with braids and I maintain by latching four times a year. I would say is thickest loc is the same size as a Crayola marker. I latch mine and they're pretty thick (I have around 75 - 80) and so far so good. I've always loved your hair so I'm definitely going to keep an eye on this new set.
i have type 4 hair and as of now my starter locs are two-strand twists. however i do want my final look to be smooth locs versus possibly having that two strand look at the end of every loc. my count is 94 locs (give or take two lol) and i was wondering if you think backcombing would be an okay method for me??
Great video as usual! I have a question: for starting locs with braids, do you think that 2-3 inch hair in starter braids followed by twisting for maintenance will result in overly thin locs?
Thanks for sharing lady. Your locs are growing nicely:) And you are right on point, I did my own 2nd set of locs using the braid loc method and I love them. My first set was comb twist then moved on to palm rolling as they got longer by a locitan.
Shawnta!!!! You're back!!! I'm so happy I could scream! You were my #1 inspiration when I started locking! I followed you on FOTKI, Nappturality (only saw you occassionally) and here on Youtube! You are beautifully, fearfully and wonderfully made! I appreciate all of the loc advise you would give to us newbies...and now that I'm 3 years in, I find myself giving advice! LOL! But at any rate...glad you decided to shoot us some vids!! MISSED THE HELL OUTTA YA!!!! (-:
LMAO she said "you may not be able to get big ole bad boys like this with latching"....lol. BTW that was a big bad ass loc you held up...lol (LOVE IT!!!)

My gaydar goes off the rocker with you. I myself am a lesbian and I know one when I see one. Are you gay. Can you answer please, I am curious, In my opinion, You are a soft butch. Honey, where are your clothes? Can you answer the question please, are you gay?
@imsuchabitch79 Wow gaydar huh. That actually brings up topic of discussion, because I feel that in some areas people automatically associate or assume a woman with locs as the male/butch of a lesbian relationship. No I am not gay to answer your question. I have a tank top on because my hair is wet after washing it for the video I did after this one, and I didn't want to wet up a shirt and not be able to take it off after I finished the pin curls.
@imsuchabitch79 Wow, I cant even believe you went there. First of all, the way you went about asking her was innapropriate. Second, this video is about locs, not sexuality. Third, being a lesbian woman myself, how exactly does one "look gay"? Im probably the gayest person you will ever meet and I dont "look gay". Apprently, your gaydar isnt as accurate as you thought. You shouldnt presume to label people before you know them.
@cocoa8872 Thanks! I'm probably done. I toy with the idea of a half sleeve on the other arm, but I kind of like the contrast of a bare arm and the tattoo'd arm. Perhaps a large thigh piece. I don't know lol \(O_O)/
i started my set of two strand twist on thursday, do i really have to wait a month until my first wash? my hair is softer in the front and more kinky in the back ...
@soulyKc No you don't have to wait!! Washing helps it to matte, but I would not do it sooner then when you would want to retwist if you goal is manicured locs. You will probably have some that unravel, honestly you would still have those same locs unraveling if you waited a month. It's the process and repetition that eventually trains the locs. So if you want to maintenance your locs every two weeks than I would wait until then for the first time so you can put everyone back together....
@soulyKc If you don't mine the fuzz then I would wash til your hearts content and just encourage them to stay together until you do retwist. One of my favorite wash methods early on in the first set was banding a few together with the ouch less rubber bands and then washing. I got my scalp clean, water on my locs, and they wasn't too disturbed that they unraveled.
@Shawnta715 ook cool thanks so much for the detailed response . i dont mind the fuzz i was thinking about semi free forming so fuzz is cool with me ... again thank you and your locs are simply amazing .. enjoy your weekend
Hi Shawnta. This video was very helpful to me. I've tried locking my hair several times with different methods several times, but they never stay put. I want smooth, cultivated locs because of my lifestyle - is there a way to make them smoother with backcombing?
@MochaKnitster007 After backcombing you can palm roll with your loc gel of choice, clip them down and dry them under the dryer. If that is not neat enough Skillteacher has a video called New Growth Dread Maintenance that shows how to use a crochet hook for maintenance but you can do the entire length that way. I found his video very helpful overall and I use to maintain a friend of mines hair by that method. She still does her hair that way, I just moved too far away :)
@Shawnta715 It would be great if you could show me because I live in a small town with zero locticians (barely 2% black folks around here *sigh*). I'm going to do it myself. BTW, I'm glad you were able to decipher my repetitive response (proof read!) LOL
lol mine is the same way hate and love it
