Actually, if you read unearthed arcana, it has variants for a paly of freedom (CG) paly of tyranny (LE) and the paly of whatever the hell was CE. they have different abilities based on alignment. not a fan of 3.5, but there it is. my weekly nerd-ness.

Depending on the DM, Paladin can be interpreted as striving for the greater good, with the belief that an ordered society is the best way to do so. Thus, if a law is unjust, or circumstances are special, a Paladin might very well value the "Good" aspect over the "Lawful" aspect. Otherwise, they're more Lawful Neutral. Plus, there's always the Greyguard.

Well, I play a Lawful Evil Paladin in service of Asmodeus. It works, because instead of receiving his powers from a good god, he gets them from the evil Asmodeus.

Our party also has a Lawful Evil Cleric, so I don't see why it can't work.

Maybe it's a class specification, but then you've got to ask yourself what a Paladin essentially is. It's a fighter who got divine powers from his/her god. In other words, the gods take on Paladins. Now is there any reason for the evil gods not to take on Paladins?

So maybe the rulebook does say being good is a class specification, but sometimes you just have to question these rules. I mean, it's not like evil gods don't have the power to create paladins, right? If so, inform me about that.

I don't think you've looked into 4e, have you? In fourth edition, 'goodness' isn't necessary for a paladin, nor is even being lawful. You may be a paladin of any deity, though you do have to match their alignment...
