Madness, yes. No question. However, for VERY experienced skydivers, it's totally do-able, and not even necessarily difficult. Remember that one's movements in freefall, when properly controlled, can allow skydivers to form complex formations (including circles of twenty divers or more), and that's a relatively common occurrence.

You've got roughly 30 seconds to work with when diving from 12,000 feet. More than enough time to link up and get a chute. Worst case, the other guy can still save you.

The only Chance to survive sky diving with out a parachute is wearing a wing suit and aim for the water, because you won't hit the water straight like a rock but glide on it.

You have only a small chace to survive at this point but at least it's better than no chance!
