fire is natural. the only reason we have so much fuel build up is because of keeping fire out. thinning also helps but when you have so much bad blood between the owl people and the loggers stuff tends to pile up. we need to reform our forest practices and attitudes twards fire if we are going to learn how to live with it and use it as a tool in forest management.
guess what there are way more than 10 people living in oregon...did you know in the united states alone more than 65% of homes in the last 10 years have been built in what use to be wildland fire area? hmm...u should get a better edumacation
It is the policies of Liberals running Oregon that have created what is literally a Scorched Earth policy. Its time to STOP liberals and vote Democrats out of office. They have proven that they only know how to destroy, time to fire the lot of em.
Time to fire "them"? Fire all of them. "They" are all the same. What happened to people being our government? Democracy happened. If you are going to live in a reality based on political ideology, restore our Republic.
"California ftw. screw Oregon. Oregon has like 10 people living there and its cold. So screw Oregon. CALIFORNIA fTW"
You California idiots... such a typical comment really. You know if we got rid of California the average national IQ would probably go up 30 points. But for now we're all stuck with you and thanks to that everyone thinks the average American is stupid.
You all are always talking about how Oregon sucks. If that's the case then stay the hell out of my wonderful state.
@nomader88 Actually the average national IQ would decrease by 30 points if California was eliminated. I can think of countless other states that removing WOULD bring the average IQ up by though.
After moving to south Oregon, we became much more familiar with the commonality of naturally occuring forest fires.
Even the coast redwoods had some hefty fires once upon a time. I've seen a lot of old charring on some old groves there. My redwood page can be found if you GOOGLE THIS:
mdvaden + Grove of Titans Redwoods
Some nearby trees are charred, and few have fire caves or cavities.
You where doing good until after the comma. Prescribed fires are a lot more effective at preventing wild fires then trying never to have them catch fire.
What people may not know is that the fires are also causing damage on an "elemental" level - that is, in increased amounts of elements such as iron, aluminum and mercury accumulating in watershed systems after a fire. Enhanced concentrations of such elements in stream water adversely affect the quality of downstream water supplies and the rate of vegetation regrowth.

@Lulitus13 I don't mean to rude or invasive but I had to comment on what you said about a god seeing all this terror...isn't your god supposed to be responsible for everything that happens on this planet, except for the bad that men do (because that's usually a combination of the devil and free will)? I thought god knows all that was, is and will ever be....if so why then does he in your words let this kind of "terror" happen. Some fires are natural others are caused...get over the god thing!
But what happens when it grows so much that it threatens cities next to forests as in some American and Australian cities? I understand your thinking but it would be asking for trouble.
That is a problem with letting wildfires burn. Using controlled fire -- what is known as prescribed fire -- can return fire back into the forest in a controlled way so thin the forest and to reduce the fuels on the forest floor. Prescribed burning is conducted under very strict weather and fuel conditions to minimize the risk of it escaping and becoming a wildfire.
Stephen Fitzgerald
Oregon State University Forestry Professor, Fire Scientist
Our forests have huge and unnatural levels of fuel buildup over the last century. Letting fires burn today may not mimic how fire naturally burned a century ago. For example, ponderosa pine forests burned every 3-30 years. With today's fuel levels, simply allowing a wildfire to burn would torch the entire stand, killing even the old growth trees and threaten communities bordering our forests.
Stephen Fitzgerald
Oregon State University Forestry Professor, Fire Scientist
yes, but that would only happen once. And afterwards we just wait a few centuries and it will go back to exactly how it was before we started messing things up.
@tarhun i realy dont want my town(bordered by pine forests all the way around) to be burned to a crisp or lose my house. also, in oregon, we have a "let burn" law that says if a fire is burning in a wilderness area, you dont supress it untill it treatens private lands, historical sites or nat.l forest.
Forest thinning, if done with fire in mind, can mimic fire. Thinning out subordinate trees, leaving the larger more fire-resistant trees, mimics mortality that would be caused by understory fire. After removing the slash, the forest can be underburned (depending on the forest type) to maintain a more open stand free of understory ladder fuels and fuels on the forest floor.
Stephen Fitzgerald
Oregon State University Forestry Professor, Fire Scientist
i think that about every 10 years theres enough bulidup where a controlled fire is needed to help maintain forest health. When buildup goes much beyond this point it could be the cause of devestating, out of of control fires.
In general you are probably right, but it will depend on the forest type and the productivity of the site. More productive sites add more fuel quicker than less productive sites. To your second point, ladder fuels can develop over a 10-120 year period, which increases the risk of crown fires. Under story trees and shrubs are considered ladder fuels.
This video breifly talks about forest fires. I found it interesting that he said years of keeping fire out is often the cause of big fires. I wonder how often a forest must be thinned out to help prevent a forest fire? What is considered too much thinning, and when is it considered deforestation?
Keeping fire out of the forest has occurred since the early part of the 20-century. A forest should be thinned perhaps every 10 years or so, depending on the type and productivity of the forests If you remove all the trees and don't replant, that might be considered deforestation. However, in Oregon, the Forest Practices Act requires landowners to replant if they reduce the density of forest below specific stocking levels.
Bogus...
It is "healthy" to reseed the "same" pine tree type through the country and expect a "bio-diversity?" After "clear-cutting" that is... Harvested by "caring and loving" logging corporations with blessings from the top to ravage and destroy public property. Owned by public...
