That's right; gender identity is separate from sexual orientation/preference. Transgender individuals can be homosexual, bisexual, heterosexual, whatever, but their gender identity (their self-perception as a femenine or masculine individual) does not match their physical sex.
And why wouldn't they believe it? A kid who is able to be that dedicated to something obviously has a problem that needs to be helped, and the parents are the ones to do it.
