So glad to see this comment. Just listened to Bocelli sing the high C and thought "He got that wrong." Then I listened to Pavarotti, Bjorling, Gigli, and Alagna and ALL sang it with the higher ending. But not Caruso and I thought his was the MOST beautiful because it harmonized. A shame they all went for theatrical instead of beautiful at some point (Gigli?). Thanks for clarifying Puccini's credit for beauty. Should surprise no one.
Why does he have to scream out an unwritten high C at the end?
Lets end the high C talk once and for all.
Puccini wrote an E for the tenor and a high C for the soprano. They are in love, and leave in an embrace (that is called harmony) not screaming at the to top of their lungs.
Note, I own 5 scores of this opera and have conducted this a number of times. why can't we respect Puccini's wishes?
You insert this after every version of this aria. YOU ARE SERIOUSLY BORING!! Yes, Puccini wrote an E but who cares. Audiences demand tenors sing high Cs and Puccinin loved the tenor voice and I am confident he doesn't care wherever he is.
No, audiences demand beautiful, exciting singing. I can imagine that they loved the C in the aria and without it here they wouldn't miss anything. Give the soprano her moment. Puccini also wrote this as pianissimo and here this is only achieved by being off-stage.
I love Vaduva, she's so expressive. She was marvellous as Juliette with Alagna in the Covent Garden production of Romeo et Juliette in the 1990's. It was televised by the BBC at the time, so somebody might have a clip from it.
She is captivating in this role (as in most of her roles). I can't watch this without wondering how Andrea Bocelli would do as Rodolfo. I admire Alagna's voice and facility, but I wish he would have sustained the final note a bit longer.
Andrea Bocceli?!? He tried singing opera several times and it was disastrous each time. He finally inderstood that it takes much MUCH more to sing (and breathe!!!) any opera role than
@hwhap13 i think what your saying is a load of rubbish. He has one of the best tenor voices around, comparable to that of Alfie Boe, and you spelt understood wrong!
you are a moron. he began by teaching himself and then went on to study singing. you don't sound like this and rise to the very pinnacle of operatic success without study.
I think those forced things are not by lack of technique but because Rodolfo is a heavy rol for him... but he sung it very well... I think is on his voice limits.
very much enjoyed ms Vaduva...a wonderfull coy performance. the woman is supposed to be of a shy disposition and of fragile health and is so often sung by melodramatic overweight sopranos whose vibrato could take out radar! very nicely done - simple and effective - very touching - as it meant to be
"Also in Mi chiamano Mimì I had the same impression like he was running out of gas"
And I said: no he can't sing "Mi chiamano Mimí" his name is Rodolfo. (Mi chiamano Mimí is the SOPRANO aria, not the TENOR). And of course, I know perfectly who is Rodolfo and who is Roberto Alagna.
I understand Alagna is a mediatic star (specially in France) but in my opinion his voice seems to be very forced. Also in Mi chiamano Mimì I had the same impression like he was running out of gas. Maybe that night night he was not at his best.
They are both amazing here. Nice to hear the high C at the end.

Wurd, Robert. Besides everyone knows that Tenors invariably suffer from Diva Envy- the poor things always have one toe in the glass slipper.

I'm sure he studied, but his voice does sound a bit forced compared to greats like lanza, pavarotti

Lanza! Please, Lanza is a good tenor, buit, like also Bocelli, is NOT a true opera singer!
Alagna is a very good singer and a wonderful Rodolfo. Although others tenors, like Pavarotti or Kraus, are better as Rodolfo.
