Does anyone have a pretty accurate TAB of this version? I got a good bit of it, though the rhythm and coordination of the right hand will probably take a lifetime to get. A worthy endeavor compared to what else I've experienced in my 65 years.
This song is excellent and richard sings it well but search Youtube for 'Luke Murray sings' to hear a guy with a great voice who sings it with total feeling. Can't seem to find any other work from this Luke - unless you know differently of course....
@spacedragonsinspace Download the most recent version of Real Player. It will give you the option of recording this song. Then you can convert to an MP3 and open it with Itunes. Unless you object to not paying for it...
Who wrote the lyrics here? "Wait for the frost?" Really? Are you that F'ing clueless? It's "wait for the first time." Pretty lame, get the words right (esp key ones) if you're gonna post 'em for chrissake.....
@saintalph0nz0 It's 'frost' you ignorant person. 'She thought we shouldn't wait for the first time' means absolutely nothing. They never waited for anything that's the point. I expect an apology to Cleapatr (who was good enough to post the song) but judging by the ignorant tone and stupidity of you comment I doubt they'll get one.
I first heard this song in Ellen's Pub in Sligo. I loved it then, but Richard Thompson sings with such feeling. I keep playing it over and over again.
@andreaneilcmc I know, I was driving through there a while ago and saw the village sign and thought of this lovely song. It is in a beautiful place too.
Thank the lord of your choice for this man. His work is sublime, and live he is a true force of nature. Always reminds me of the parts Alan Rickman plays - lugubrious, world-weary, but as sharp as a tack and capable of beautiful stuff.
Absolutely extraordinary song. I knew the first Fairport Convention pretty well but i've just discovered RT work solo and my jaws been dropping since!
I know about everyone's said this. But, I love this song, and Richard Thompson. He writes the most beautiful songs, technically and emotionally. They make me want to cry, laugh, love, and live. Thank you so much for this.
Aaron Jones makes a pretty impressive effort if anyone has interest. But no one can beat Richard Thompson's presence, I mean, JUST LISTEN. Engrossing and beautiful. I don't trust the seven people who disliked it!
Near 200,000 views and just under 500 likes, that's criminal. Heartbreaking song, and the original is the only version with the skill and the soul to do it justice. People would do well not to cover it as it's simply just not "another song" to casually throw out, it is a trademark, and a masterpiece.
@Bluebuthappy182 I actually found Christy's version on the side bar almost immediately after i hit the post button. I love Christy but for me to be honest Richard's version has the edge he's an amazing artist. It would be pretty cool if Christy Moore, Richard Thompson and Chris Woods did a somethig together thought, that would be one hell of a concert
Everytime I write a song I come back to this and just think to myself whats the point? This is one of the greatest ever written, it evokes so much emotion it is ridiculous! to those who compare the versions, save your breath. Music is about listening to the heart!!
I surely do love you RT. Saw you this weekend in Asheville, NC and cried at the wonderful beauty and grace you produce. Thank you for who you are and for sharing your talent and heart with us who love and appreciate you.
i think christy moore is better singing this song. there just something about this fella mybe it is i heard chisty's version years ago and it grew on me
This has to be one of the greatest songs ever written in the sense of a "singer-songwriter", and in the sense (almost as an afterthought) of the guitar
musicianship of the songwriter, ie the poet. Check RT's Vincent Black Lightening too. If the Eagles famous, RT is the hidden, better still version!

It's so funny that Richard dismisses this song as a triffling throwaway, yet his fans love it. Exactly like George Jones regarding his recording of "the grand tour". Crazy.
RT - a true poet, singer, troubadour of our times and his guitar playing is just astounding. A "rare kind",! Love the post from carollizc, "real stuff, fine as single malt and enduring as stone" ,, just wonderful.....

Richard Thompsons' discography is second to none, but when he's touring THIS is the one the audience screams out for ! PS ..And "Vincent Black Lightning"..and "Just the Motion"...and......x
I just heard this song for the first time this morning, on the radio. I'm not terribly fond of his voice, but it no doubt fits this song, and the lyrics made me want to find it. Thanks for posting it!
Thompson has been around since the late 60's has a large catalogue a truely great guitarist and is tremenduous live if you ever get the chance [not sure what your problem is with his voice but to each their own]

All the best,
I heard an amazing cover of this at the Big Green Gathering in England in 2006 and Pixie and Lynn, if you are reading this you are messengers of Thompson, your cover is ACE, and you are amaxing people!!!!

Fairport Convention was a pretty cool group
in the 60's-70's. Sandy Denny was an amazing
singer in the group. I think that was FC highlight
when she was with them. Another group worth
mentioning was Pentangle. "Free Flight" is their flagship song. Great stuff coming out of the U.K. then. Still good today.

I saw him--again--recently on tour with Loudon Wainwright on the "Loud and Rich" tour (great name for the tour), and I was yet again amazed.
I haven't heard him do this song for years, though. I wonder why it's not in his regular set lists.
