Definitely the equal of Kay Kyser's original version and superior to the Midler/Manilow

version that is so popular today. This is my all time favorite song and I think I have

listened to more than 100 different versions of it.

This song was at the top of the charts. Every time we turned the radio on, this was blaring out.

It was an extremely cold winter. Up at 6am, wash and shave in cold water, dress into itchy uniforms, march to the cookhouse for a breakfast, as often as not, of kippers. with not enough time to pick out the bones.

The most miserable period of my life.
