70% of fire departments are 100% volunteer. people like myself have never seen a penny for risking our lives. not just in fires but on EMS calls where you are sick and i can easily get the same sickness as you have. Plus most firefighters and EMTs are still able to collect food stamps, so stop acting like every firefighters get paid $100,000 a year. Maybe you should go apply at your local volunteer dept and see what the job is really about.
Harp 1916: Wear and tear on your bodies? Competitive cyclists live on average 16 years longer than the average person... How do you explain that? Dont get me wrong... my brother is a fireman. He is very much looking forward to 6 years from now when he can take a second job and enjoy his salary there plus his pension from the department... Oh... and he had a tragedy in his life last year. His insurance paid out $160K for health car for his wife. No deductible. As a Realtor I have no insurance.
I bet your brother would be thrilled to see this. I'm a firefighter and if you were my brother I would be very upset. Do you know how long a firefighter gets to warm up his body before a fire? Oh, how about the 0300 med call where you and a partner have lift a 300 pound guy out of the bathtub and onto a stetcher. I'll give you a hint we don't get a chance to do Yoga on the way to a cardiac arrest. Competitive Cyclist do one thing. That's ride bikes! I make 11.94 per hour no overtime.
@Drew1house Competitive cyclists aren't routinely exposed to products of combustion, products that include hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, and phosgene. They aren't required to manipulate heavy equipment or obese medical patients on a daily basis, often from positions that put extreme stress on joints and ligaments, the lumbar spine most of all. Cyclists do not train for extended periods at temperatures upwards of 300 degrees Fahrenheit wearing in excess of 60 lbs of gear.
Pension finds are funded through long term investments and from current payroll. Properly funded pensions can do not work this way. This "pyramid scheme" shows about 10 percent of how a good pension actually works. As typical with most of Glenn becks "educational awareness".
Firefighters deserve or thanks and generous compensation. Just make sure the pandering politicians are promising something they can deliver BEFORE you vote for them.
Firefighters deserve to retire at 50, but the actuarial tables are such most of these pension systems are doomed to fail. There already is a city in Alabama that simply stopped sending out checks to their retired police and firmen, because there was no more money. Make sure that the pandering politicians establish funds that can fulfill their promises, BEFORE you vote for them.
The also fail to mention the average lifespan of a retired firefighter is 16 year less then the average person due to wear and tear on our bodies, that's why we can retire at 50 and 55 so we can at lease have 5to10 years of that pension before kick the bucket.
The pension was given to us in the 1980s as a part of a concession by the government instead of raises. Here in my department in Florida, a paramedic firefighter starts at $13.75 an hour. The local theme park starts paramedics at $17.50 an hour. The difference is that the theme park guys get no pension.
Pension costs about 20% of payroll. 20% of $13.77 is $2.75. So, go ahead take the pensions away, but pay me what I am worth instead of the pension. I will make more money.
It seems some people still believe in a tooth fairy. They think their contributions are stored away in a vault as the basis of their later retirement. All retirement systems are glorified pyramid schemes, whether they are for firemen, teachers, or social security. We contribute money which is used for others retirement, in the hope that future generations will contribute to ours. State politicians have overpromised its workers, resulting in retired firefighters in Alabama simply being abandoned
This Pension pyramid is completely wrong, firefighters dont pay into other peoples pensions, they pay into theirs, get your facts straight you piece of shit
Why do Teabaggers attack local government? The big federal government and the waste is the problem. We spend billions other countries, wars that accomplished nothing, and foreign aid and your worried about a couple of firemen making a decent retirement?
WHEN THE EXPERTS PANIC - THEY CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT
Firefighters are there 24 hours a day 365 days a year to just answer your EVERY need and concern. They will come to your home anytime and help YOU with the most mundane paranoid fear or the biggest disaster of YOUR life.
YOU get more protection, peace of mind, and value for YOUR money from Firefighters, than ANY other service provided to YOU,
Glen Beck is a CHARLATAN who is responsible for distorting that FACTS and helping shield corrupt politicians who stole money from pension funds- across the nation- to balance budgets and fund pork barrel projects.
Don't drink his Kool-Aid until you learn the REAL truth!
wow i really cant stand people like this, no one does it that way no town is that stupid , too many people try to trash talk the fire department when they havent got a clue what they do

@mfd12321 no crap there isn't 300 fire fighters in a single deparment. But when someone retire's how EXACTLY are they paid for then!? how does the pension fund get funded? magic?
All across the country from New York to California, states are going broke because corrupt politicians have voted themselves, and the Unions which vote them into office, enormous pensions which cannot be paid. Wake up and correct the system today or watch it fall in total collapse tomorrow.
An Illinois State legislator can retire at 55 with as little as 8 years of service. They get 3% tacked on for each of first 4 years in office, they get 3.5% for each of the next 2 years, 4% for each of the next 2 years, 4.5% for each of the next 4 years and 5% of their final salary fror every year afetr 12 years. Former Senate President Emil Jones Jr retired at 133% of what he made his last day of service. And you want to REDUCE MY pension, bugger off!!!!!!
Anyone can twist the numbers the way the media has. You must be someone that is dumb enough to believe in get rich quick pyramid schemes and that the aliens built the pyramids. Do your own homework on things.
Clearly Mr. Beck didn't do his homework correctly. His pension pyramid wouldn't last 2 years in the real world. No municipality is stupid enough to set up a pension program in this fashion. I guess Beck has to make up lies to appear like he's uncovered some great scandal.
