  • Im buying the Vox night train and the Egnater tweaker and the g12h30 speaker Which one do you recomend to load the cabinet, the 8ohms or the 16 ohms??

    Nice Video

    Thank you

  • What were your settings for delay? Even before the gain it sounded great and didn't get too muddy...it just added some depth. That's all I want to do with delay as well, but I want to use some mild amp gain. I've got the Carbon Copy (love it) and I'll be picking up a Night Train soon. Just wanna know how to set it up. Great playing, BTW.

  • Im looking for my first tube amp and now Im between the blackstar ht 20, vox night train and the egnater. Seeing your videos seems that the Vox is better for Hendrix tones. What do you think ?

  • Hi!

To which cab (and speaker) is the amp connected?

  • @DavidColledani

The cab is a Custom Audio Amplifier 1x12 cube (very similar to a Bogner Cube) and the speaker is a Celestion G12H30.

  • Nice, but I bet I can make it sound like crap.

  • @AncientItalianSecret

hahahah- awesome. I think it's healthy to know our limitations. But I think it's healthier to have a just a pinch more confidence. :)

  • I recently pick one of the up and love the tones!...But does anyone know how to get a good reverb with this as it doesn't have an effects loop. When I use a reverb unit (Holy Grail) in front of the amp it sounds terrible with distortion.

  • Yeah, that's the problem with amps that have lots of gain/distortion. It makes it tough to manage theuse of reverb and delay. The only way to fix it is to back off the gain and use a pedal for distortion. Just put the distortion/overdrive pedal BEFORE the reverb and/or delay.

  • Thanks dognmoon...I'll try that with my Boss OD. I haven't used it in awhile.

  • I have the same reverb as you, and just bought this amp, what I have done is replaced the grail with an MXR carbon copy delay, Yes, I know it's not a reverb and is not a loved replacment, but I can honestly say, it has filled the void a bit and with some tweaking its a very nice fake reverb

  • @17blazin--Thanks. I had the same idea after seeing a demo of the MXR. What got me thinking about a delay unit is my Roland Micro Cube. It has a reverb/delay knob U have to chose one or the other--and I've alway like the delay over the reverb to fill out the sound. So thanks again--you've convinced me to try the MXR.

  • @univibe23 Yeah dog and moon has a great way of getting it. Or if you are willing to pick up a pedel that is an old amp copycat. Boss has a few that provide both fuzz and the old fender spring reverb in one unite that I have had great success with, I have the fender deluxe version of the unit but there are a few and they rock!

  • ok cool how does the bogner compair to the mesa 1X12 cab?

  • They're all pretty similar. The Cube and the Custom Audio are lined on the interior with foam and usually have a Celestion Vintage 30 (although mine is loaded with a G12H30). The Mesa ones are usually loaded with their C-90 Black Shadow. I think the Mesa isn't quite as deep either.

  • Where did you get the custom audio electronics cab? i cant seem to find one that that one.

  • I bought it used. You can try Wild West Guitars in Riverside, CA or you could just get a Bogner Cube 1x12 which is very similar.

  • i checked out all your NT videos, it seems like it can do that chimey EJ sort of sound...how well does the amp clean up? Do you think this amp would be too loud for home use? Also I read in magazine review that their Night Train was rather noisy, do you this problem with yours? + do you prefer the NT or your Rebel 30?

    Cheers! :p

  • It cleans up very nicely. Beautiful cleans. I think it can get great low volume tones, so it would be fine for the home. Mine was really noisy in the half power mode, but I just kept it on high power and it was really noise-free. I actually prefer the core tone of the Night Train but prefer the versatility of the R30 if I need to do a gig and cover a lot of ground (tonally speaking).

  • Oh ok cool thanks. I compared your vids, and I also prefer the Vox tones....it's about half the price too!

  • half the price, true- but in fairness to the Egnater, it's half the amp. This is a single channel amp with no effects loop while the Egnaters are really loaded with cool user features. :)

But I love the tone on this video. I think it's probably some of my favorite tones I've ever gotten.

  • Agreed...I'd probably go for the Egnater if I had the money, but I'd be happy with a no-frills amp if it had great tone :p

  • Awesome. Another guy that likes Lincoln Brewster. Great guitarist, great artist.

  • Request for an Orange Tiny Terror demo. I'm a fan of these amps ...I have both the TT and the Dual TT. great stuff...really smooth gain increase to any type tone u need

  • send me the amp. I'll demo just about anything. :)

No- all kidding aside- I demo'd one of these in Northern California and I wasn't crazy about it. I really wanted to like it since it was one of the first little grab and go rehearsal/gig amps but I thought it was a little fizzy. Of course, that could've been the cab I was testing it with.

  • Interesting. Can you describe "fizzy"? Not sure I understand. The TT does not have the marshall style crunch like the Egnator at least to my ear..more blues tone smoother crunch. Do you agree? Do you like Night Train better?

  • I really liked the Night Train a lot. I tracked with it quite a bit for mail away recording sessions that I got hired for while I had it.

By fizzy, I mean that some companies try to build clarity into an amp's voicing by adding top end. Unfortunately, sometimes that makes the tones a little more brittle to my ears. BUT, I must admit, I normally play strats which are bright, AND one might be able to tame some of that fizzy top end with another brand of preamp tubes.

  • I have a Rebel, and the Vox seems to have a lot more clarity - both hearing individual notes on high gain settings and chime/ringing out on lower gain settings. The Rebel's sweet spot as I can tell is with the gain about 2-3 o'clock getting a good rhythm grind but I don't find it versatile - go lower and it becomes sterile - higher and it has too much hair. Roll back the volume on your guitar and it loses all the punch. I'm thinking about swapping it for the Night Train.

  • Great Playing!! I am looking forward to buy this amp or the egnater rebel 20 , which one will you suggest me? thanks

  • they're both really great amps!

  • But it sounds great man.. I always thought that you need an effects loop for reverb and delay but it seems it still sounds great :D :D

  • you just have to turn the delay trails down a little bit since they can get splatty with extra gain. Thanks for the kind words!

  • Do you run all effects in the front of t he amp or what

  • yeah, you have to because there's no effects loop.

  • fantastic playing man! now what are he specs on that guitar? im guessing suhr v60s? and is it alder or mamywo? really love this guitar! I really wish however that James could put out more Ice Water guitars. Those are the best looking guitars ever! (imho of course)

  • Thanks so much. The BW2k had a Secret in the bridge, and two 2500's in the neck and middle (I believe). Body was Mamywo. Bridge was also a piezo bridge. I really enjoyed that guitar while it was here. I received it in trade and knew that I was gonna sell it before I even got it. But it was nice to have it while it was here. :)

  • how does the delay sound in person with a good bit of gain? i'm thinkin about getting one of these and a tc nova repeater, but i'm curious as to if it sounds good in front of the amp, since there's no fx loop.

  • it really depends on how much gain you use. It gets splatty of the gain is up too high, but if you like just chimey tones from the Vox, you're gonna be fine. It'll sound great.

  • Your tone is perfect... That's your fingers man.

  • Is it possible to get a smooth lead tone like Moore,Santana, Slash or has it to be boosted for this?

  • You'd probably need a boost for that- especially something that would boost the midrange frequencies. a treble booster (like a Rangemaster clone) or any of the variety of TubeScreamer clones would get you in the ballpark.

  • Hey man nice demos and playing as always. So with your expierence with both egnators in your vids and your new toy, which to you like better and why. Thx

  • I much prefer the Vox. The Egnater has a ton more features, but I actually just prefer the voice of the Vox a little more. It also has some natural compression and squish to it that is more my style than the Rebel. The Egnater feels a little tighter. I think if you're gonna do a higher gain thing (which I'm not) then the Rebel is the way to go. But if you want something a little rootsy, The Vox wins hands down.

  • so you're comparing this with the old rebel? phew, thought that you were comparing it with all egnaters case in point, your MOD 50.

oh, and down there in another comment you said u do clinics for taylor? im looking for it right now and i think i found you but i only see one vid...is your name Rob Magargal? lol i think its you because i see the M13 in the vid.

  • actually, scratch that name i put. Rob Magargal is the name of the guy who changed the pickguard and pickups so i dont think thats you. or maybe it is??

  • Get this in print: NOTHING COMPARES TO THE MOD50. :) I absolutely love that amp. I haven't touched an amp in years that inspires me like the MOD50 does.

No, Rob Magargal is the Director of the Service & Repair Dept. down at Taylor. I'm just a hired guitar monkey. If you watch those pre-wired pickguard demos, they're all me. My name is Corey.

And be warned: in those videos, I need a haircut. I look like I borrowed my hair from an Oompa Loompa. haha

  • haha juuuuuuuust making sure. have you ever tried the M4's or are they pretty much the same thing as the MOD50?

ahh icic. haha so it IS you that i saw in that one video. haha your hair's fine. just kinda questioned whether it was you or not because your voice seemed a bit different in those vids.

  • I have limited experience with the M4, but I think part of what I love is the EL34s and the power section. I'm sure it's all comprehensive.

Yeah, it's me. But at home, I'm comfy and a little aloof. I feel stupid doing YouTube videos because it seems presumptuous that anyone would care what I have to say. But on the Taylor videos, I was trying to speak neatly and cleanly and all professional-like and such. :)

  • i see. i dont really have much experience with tube amps other than my fender deville so I've only been around 6L6's for the most part. i should try me some EL34s

nahh i think everyone likes to hear your personal opinions. it gives different viewpoints for people especially me to think about and maybe even try out. dont stop doing youtube vids!

  • hahaha

  • Awesome review and tone! Any chance you could do a shootout between the Vox NightTrain and the Egnater Rebel? What exactly did you mean by "feels a little bit squishy" at 1:18 ? Are you referring to the response/slow attack of the amp?

  • yeah, sometimes when I talk about an amp, I'm talking about how fast the amp responds to picking. A Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier is normally gonna be faster and tighter while this amp feels more compressed and squishy.

Unfortunately, I sold all my Rebels so I can't compare between the two. But everythings the same if you look at my other videos and watch the Rebel ones. I dial in similar tones, use the same cab, and the same recording and effects setup.

  • love your tone and your playing!!!

what type of gigs do you get hired for?

  • thanks for the kind words.

I live in Orange County, CA, so a lot of what I do is singer/songwriter stuff. Mostly pop music. Some church worship services and stuff. This weekend I'm playing for a local awards show and running the band for Phil Stacy, who was an American Idol runner up. I'm also a clinician for Taylor guitars. You can see me doing demos on their web site.

  • Great that you're using your talents to praise / worship God!

    Awesome playing and nice demos.
