Santanocci - I am Gillian Swain and was at Great Barr Comprehensive School, Aldridge Rd., Birmingham from 1962 to 1967 (same time as Steve). Our Head of Music was Colin Fanshawe. I have my school report for those years. Sorry you are skeptical and that your vocabulary leaves something to be desired. I am proud to have known Steve.
Dont complain about the music today. Try to understand it.
I love 60s music. I was born in 1990. I listen to The Beatles, The Animals, The Small Faces etc and I listen to new bands like Fleet Foxes, Boy and Bear, The Wombats, Foster the People and artists like Gotye, Kimbra and Sia. All who have been influenced by great bands of the past.
I was at school with Steve when this song became a No. 1 hit for him and the Spencer Davies group. Steve & I used to sing together in folk clubs and once at school (lucky me !!!). The blues/rock influence - he was a great fan of Ray Charles....listen to him sing "Geogia" (he sang this at a concert with Eric Clapton last year). FAB-U-LOUS....pulls right at your heart strings.
My turn to rant! There is a lot of great music still out there. The main difference between then and now is back in the '60s & '70s we had the good fortune to have great radio stations, both AM and later, FM to hear great music on. Today, not so much!. Now we have even greater opportunities to explore music through the internet. Try checking out bands from other countries than the US & Great Britain. There is fantastic music being played in Japan, France and Germany, to mention a few. Google it!
This song was written by a Jamaican Name Jackie Edwards for Producer Chis Blackwell that gave the world Bob Marley. Also chk out "Someone Help Me" by the same Jamaican writter.... Both songs were number one UK hits for this Group.
I used to go see Spencer Davis at the Marquee, the regular Thursday night band if I remember correctly, Stevie was so cool even at 16!!! Thank you for posting this series of GREAT well recorded songs!! It captures their amazing talent!
@oatstao Well 'keep on running' wasn't written by the Spencer Davis Group, it's by Jackie Edwards. Spencer Davis Group just 'reinterpolated' it...........
19 and damn good!! I only knew that he sounded much older at 19, but man, some those glassy-eyed looks in his vocal riffing around the 3:00 mark, pretty deep for 19!
When I first heard The Spencer Davis Group doiong Gimme SOme Lovin' I thought they were a Black group. Then when Dick Clark had shown a video clip of this teen age kid singing with a style and poise far beyond his years it blew me away!.
OK, people. If he was born in May of 1948, then he was 19 here, not 16. Maybe 18, if it was very early 1967. Still, he's got amazing talent and soul for a teenager. But let's get our facts straight.
I remember seeing this band live. If I recall one of the band "mooned" us for some reason that was hilarious a the time. Then again maybe it was a different band. Anyway it was a good concert, at least I think it was. LOL ;)
Brilliant tune.No surprise though to see so many comments about "crap music today" and "there aren't any bands that can play today" What rubbish !!
The music is always there, you need to find it!! In the 60's and 70's this was the mainstream so you got guitar music on the radio. Now it's cheese and R&B.
That doesn't mean good bands have vanished of the face of the earth.
I truly hope that when I'm older I don't moan about music and that I continue to be excited about discovering new bands.
@MrSheffield8 Good comment! My issue with "today's air-play", is that it isn't so much about the music anymore, as it is what "sells", hence a lot of "crap" being pushed by record companies. You're absolutely right about great "new" groups; but it's a shame that you really need to "hunt" for them in today's radio/music world. Peace.
@MrSheffield8 Standards flowed out like a tidal wave in those days, how many of todays electronicly produced songs will gain standard status like tis one?
@MrSheffield8 How refreshing to read something like this for a change. People who moan about "music today" seem to conveniently forget that over the decades there has been a lot of dross and it wasn't like every band was great. There are some really good acts around today that just don't seem to get the credit they deserve! Ooops that was a bit of a rant wasn't it!
booked the SDG for the 1967 Brighton Rag Ball at The Metropole Hotel, the first gig they had ever had there, supported by Zoot Money, Herbie's people and The Laymen. Good Times
The Scandinavian's and Germans seem to have treasure troves of well preserved, good quality pop clips from the 60's. Too bad the BBC didn't follow suit.
I'm a bit foggy on what "yay" means... "Slang for Cocaine, popular in California's Bay Area. Syn; blow, coke, snow" - according to Urban Dictionary... Okay, you don't like the subtitle on this vid but better with it than nothing, right? If I were you I'd be happy 'cause the scene of these performances wasn't in your country - it would be pretty annoying if these were dubbed in German language, hehehe!!
@bcr07pzu this song has little raw power , its still an absolutely great song dont get me wrong but when you have felt the power of Rammstein , thats true power. , still , great song!
I wonder what it was like for him to discover he could sing well, and then learn he sang like a black bluesman? ... was he the first singer referred to as "blue-eyed soul?"
@dac10012 Insightful indeed, but in reality, they probably just decided to play it slower to fill the air time. Love the song, the group and Winwood though.
@bolendoc In all, I guess situation was quite comparable for most of Britain and Scandinavia. My gut feeling still says that theese kids react a bit cold, rather because thats just how finnish as such react ( untill they get the party fired up with a bottle or ten of moonshine ) than because they´re flabbergasted about witnessing a revolutionary musical revelation. Im sure though they digged it, and so do I - Im a dedicated fan of Steve´s singing.
@bolendoc Who, Jimi, Dylan, Beatles, Stones , Kinks etc were on sale bought and listened to within a week or two after they aired with their latest hits in England. In Iceland they were even snapper I got a feeling.
@bolendoc we had to wait quite some time before monopoly was actually broken but anyway, when it happened it wasn´t excactly for the better, as is to my impression the same story for most of Europe -it rather turned the general media situation in a more narrowminded and commercial direction.Still, recordshops sold all the stuff in in large in every bigger city ( Helsinki isn´t excactly a hickbilly outfield though ofcourse somewhat minor compared to Copenhagen and Stockholm )
@bolendoc Yes, a similar process took place in Scandinavia and rest of europe more or less simultaneously though Im not sure what liberisation you´re refering to still, I reckon it´s about breaking the broadcasting monopoly then.Pirate radiostations operating from international waters in Öresund were taking steps to push forward that process already in the 50´s initiating State monopoly radio in Both Denmark and Sweden to open up for programmes with a younger approach and appeal from mid 60´s.
@bolendoc one reason why you´d often see a different kinda response from the TV audience in clips from american studio shows from that period is that people often were casted especially for their appearance in the crowd and a whole troup of professional dancers among go-go dancing girls in cages etc were brought in to spice up the atmosphere and make things appear more animated and lively, while these were just average youngsters. If stunned about anything it´s about being on TV.
@bolendoc I think there´s no reason for assuming that the audience were " stunned" or suffering the results of an accute culture-shock -wave.Motown records had been available for a decade by that time and aswell Kinks, Beatles and Stones had been touring the whole of scandinavia, a whole tide-wave of selfgrown bands were popping up allover and everybody were listening to radio Luxembourg. What do you refer to by " controlled media " ?
@bolendoc the most likely explanation for the audience reaction lies in the whole set-up.This is not a concert, it´s an appearance in aTV-studio,100 or so in the audience, seperated in two sections, divided in rows of seats and app 15 meters to the stage, and they are finnish - they have a different temperament. It´s debateable whether to call this progressive and ahead of it´s time,it´s very much based upon a a Tamla-Motown-like structure and expression but with a white approach so-to-speak.
@bolendoc not to mention liberal ideas on childrens raising, cutting edge kids television programmes to set the upper boom for all others, huge anti-A-bomb and anti-war marches, boys growing long hair even before it was invented in england or usa, and a 100 year old humanism tradition carried out in education of the rural population in Peoples High Schools ( Højskole ) ,cooperative movements ( Andelsbevægelse ) and social security ! -aren´t you mixing up Scandinavia with Balkan or something ???
@bolendoc LOL @ " the conservative atmosphere in a Scandinavia yet to be liberated " - thx for airing your very own ideas on the cultural climate in 60´s Scandinavia, from which ideas such as womens liberation, equality between sexes, socialdemocracy, equal rights for sexual minorities, students participation in decissions at universities ( before Paris ), abolition of restriction on Porn," free love ", anti-establishment and anti-authority etc etc practically spread to the rest of the world...
I think we have to give Spencer Davis credit for giving Stevie a chance, and then letting him do his thing. Most egocentric group leaders would not have done that, but fortunately he did :)
Personally I was never a great fan of the Beatles when there was Bands like this around, which where much more authentic the Fab Four were bubble gum compaired.
@kew4612 The Beatles were authentic and anything but bubble gum. Give them credit where it's due. They were also doing gritty stuff like this in the late sixties. The simplistic pop stuff they stopped doing in '64.
Compliment to the Finnish TV crew, they got a very good live sound on tape, which sadly was the exception in this era (minimalistic sound equipment and sound engineers geared to easy listening music)
"hey made this song because he had the title of A Child protigy which he didnt take very well, he wanted to be one of the boys, he wanted to be a man" I got that from Spencer Davis on the movie History Of Rock: The British Invasion
Yeah, when I first heard him when I was a teen, I thought he was black. In fact their songs are influenced from the Motown sound. Here Steve shifted from the keyboards to the guitar so naturally.....he is a real genious.
Wow I just started listening to Spencer Davis Group and they are really amazing. I had only heard Gimme Some Lovin' and loved that so I had to find more. I was not disappointed.
Finnish subtitles, the date of these performances posted by dac10012 took place in 19th of March -67, Helsinki/Finland. A couple of months later Steve Winwood left the band to join to Blind Faith. Spencer Davis Group caused a bit gray hairs for the programme makers due to the equipment set-up and sound check lasted over 3 hours while the studio time was runnin' out.
At any case - 'twas worth of it.
BTW, Jimi Hendrix wanted Steve to his band, but was too shy to call and ask...
@movement26 You hit the nail on the head! Stevie a white boy from Birmingham in the Midlands. Always thought he sounded like Ray. Both of them great singers.
Stevie was real good on guitar and keyboards. RIP Ray! Keep on Runnin' Stevie!

"hey made this song because he had the title of A Child protigy which he didnt take very well, he wanted to be one of the boys, he wanted to be a man" I got that from Spencer Davis on the movie History Of Rock: The British Invasion
Thatotherkid100 1 year ago
Yeah, when I first heard him when I was a teen, I thought he was black. In fact their songs are influenced from the Motown sound. Here Steve shifted from the keyboards to the guitar so naturally.....he is a real genious.

Wow I just started listening to Spencer Davis Group and they are really amazing. I had only heard Gimme Some Lovin' and loved that so I had to find more. I was not disappointed.

Managed to put a new twist to the song, great group.
Winwood to me was as good as anyone in that era, but didn't become a mega star like some.
robertlaf 2 years ago
Damn his voice is great! If you wouldn't know and see, you'd say he's black.

That's a funny coincidence, Today is the first time I've looked for this video and up until watching it I did think he was black lol.

Wow that's insane man.

What language are these subtitles? Finnish?
penrhyndeundraeth 2 years ago
Looks Finnish to me, too.
TCall2004 2 years ago
@TCall2004 Finnish would be my first guess my second guess, Estonian. Don't see why this detail preoccupies me more than the musical performance.
penrhyndeundraeth 2 years ago 2
@penrhyndeundraeth It's Finnish. Somehow I don't think Soviet Estonian TV was broadcasting too many Spencer Davis Group shows in 1967.

@CCowboyM No, as much talent as the Beatles. Their music isn't going to go away or stop being listened to because you don't like it.
