  • just call it emo/skramz or whatever. all these videos are filled with comments arguing about emo. back in the 90's emo was generally disliked by 90% of the hardcore scene, it's not like it was a huge awesome thing everyone loved..

  • @dankmathus Emo is still generally disliked by most people, it's just that nowadays a lot of hipsters want to give 90's emo some indie cred and call it the "true emo" and disregard everything else. It's a lot like saying "Hey I love pizza! I only like the crusts though, the cheese and tomato sauce are too mainstream!" Fair enough if you only like the crusts, but please don't go around calling it "the true pizza".

  • I use to listen to this song on my way to school my senior year of high school now every time I listen to it = automatic nostalgia

  • I'm pretty sure none of you would even know these bands if it weren't for Third Wave "mainstream" emo. Just because you all want to be "original" hipsters now, please don't act like everything you say is anything more than your own opinion. I love all three waves and to me none of them are the "true" emo, just different stages in the genre's evolution. There's a reason why some bands were mainstream, oh yeah, maybe because they were good? I'm off to listen to MCR and TITR now, fuck off hipsters.

  • @xTheYankx Everyone trying to show each other up on the internet, good job you win.

  • People are still namedropping obscure screamo and calling it "the real emo" go back to fourfa (if it even exists anymore) anyone who was listening to this at the time remembers it as emo, and the only reason anyone distances themselves from the term is that so called "third wave" commercial garbage became the go to rock music of the 00's

  • "and I'll know when I hear your name even if I have to sing it to myself" soooo goood

  • Sounds like early Foo Fighters a little bit...

  • God, his voice is incredible.

  • @imawesomeize I know. It's like he's slightly off key but it's always okay

  • sounds like mock orange! holy shit thats crazy

  • @weezerfootie I think Mock Orange sounds like Braid. ;-) All good though. The Record Play is an awesome album.

  • To me emo is a fusion of hardcore/post-hardcore and indie rock (and occasionally pop-punk) with confessional lyrics and a focus on dynamics with a lot of apreggiation, octave chords and contrasts between clean and distorted amp sounds. In other words Braid, Sunny Day Real Estate, Mineral, The Get Up Kids, Saves the Day, The Promise Ring and early My Chemical Romance.

  • @drogaz1 you had me until you through My Chemical Romance in there. I'll just pretend you said Texas is the Reason.

  • @tohellwithnick Have you ever heard "Early Sunsets Over Monroeville" (which sounds a lot like early At the Drive-In), "Demoltion Lovers" or "The Art of Drowning (which sounds a lot like early SDRE or Texas is The Reason).

  • @drogaz1 no but I shall investigate.

  • @drogaz1 - I have to agree about MCR, I didn't believe it when I first heard it, but then I listened to them and you're right.

  • @Bakersfieldsucks777 Thank you, I'm glad you actually listened to those songs instead just saying "MCR is no emos they shitty commercial shit" and dismissing it right away without actually investigating.

  • @drogaz1 I agree wholeheartedly early MCR is amazing.

  • @tohellwithnick I'll pretend you're not a pretentious hipster.

  • @tohellwithnick I don't mean to brag to texas is the reason fans, but my uncle is the gutiarist in that band

  • reading the comments on here drive me nuts. indie with emo influences??!!! were any of you actually around when any of this was going on? i doubt it. all of these bands were heavily influenced by punk rock bands. to me, braid, promise ring, cap n jazz, indian summer, mineral, ect... are all just punk rock bands putting their own twists on it. emo is a dumb dumb word.

  • Comment removed

  • one of the best songs I've heard. It has the kind/type of emotion and purity that I love and appreciate in music.

  • Great band, song. Takes me back.

  • C'mon guys, there's no such thing as emo.

It's just a horrible misconception and it's best to just forget all about it.

  • @Vertze I think we would all be embracing the name if Third Wave didn't come around.

  • @Vertze Um, emo is a misconception? So what do you reckon bands like Mineral, Sunday Real Estate and so on should be called then? If anything then "indie", but they deal with relatively different topics and even sound different. I think it's a perfectly fine term to use, too bad it has been spoiled by the 00s and mainstream, though. For me, bands like Mineral will always remain the "true" emo,

  • Choice song.

  • One of the best songs with some of the most beautiful lyrics!

  • Yeah, this along with some CapNJazz, American Football, and Owls! I like old emo, but beyond those bands I dont know of much... help me out anyone?

  • Christie Front Drive, Samiam, Texas is the Reason, Mineral, Get Up Kids, blah...

  • @ourlucidream None of these bands are emo. There all indie with emo influences learn your stuff.

  • i like texas is the reason, promise ring, etc.

  • @beneathmiskin Again Promis Ring is indie with emo influences.

  • @L3theo yeah man 90's emo is tha best : pavement, jawbox, fugazi , at the drive-in (:

  • @djangobaby none of those bands are emo idiot. Try some Rites Of Spring, Mohinder, Moss Icon. Fugazi was post hardcore.

  • @kamikazi5489 Ian Mackaye 1986-"emocore must be the stupidest f$%ing thing I've ever heard in my entire life." Guy Piccioto (Rites of Spring) agrees with Ian. And no doubt I agree with them. Calling music emo is...beyond the need for an inflammatory remark. So please, learn your stuff.

Please though, enlighten the Internet, explain "emo"

I never said those bands were emo. I suggested bands similar to the ones the other user listed and you assumed since he said emo I implied it

  • @ourlucidream But Rites of Spring and Embrace are perfectly Hardcore Punk, Ian Mackaye doesn't liked a band be in a different genre coz it's "emotional" lyrics. But Sunny Day Real Estate, Braid, Mineral, Boy's Life, etc. are Hardcore Punk and Indie Rock. Is a separated genre.

  • Exactly ^

  • Thanks a ton for uploading this, one of my favorite songs by them. Such an underrated group. This is what REAL emo is kids.

  • YeS! I'm 31 and this was REAL emo back in the day haha. Sounds so awesome to hear myself say that, but hey. BRAID!

  • @xfearbeforexx huh, this real emo stuff is damn good
