Just to get this straight: Dracula's myth wasn't "born" in Romania, but in England, with an Irishman for a "midwife". Vlad Dracul (called so after joining the Order of the Dragon) and Vlad Tepes, who are often conflated, though they are father and son, were no more bloodthirsty that other of their contemporaries, not to mention they got an awful lot of bad press from the Turks ... I'm a great fan of Rushdie's work, but I was disappointed by his use of this myth as if it were historical fact ...

Actually the whole idea of vampires was born in my country in the Middle Ages where young women would lie to their parents that they didn't lose their virginity by having sex before marriage, but that an undead person, usually someone that their parents knew and that had died recently, had come into their room at night and raped them in order to drink their virginal blood. Dracul has been popularized throughout the Western world by the English novel and of course movies.

The Iranian government officially lifted the Rushdie Fatwa in September 1998 so that it would no longer be a state sponsored death sentence. So from a government perspective they have disassociated itself from the Fatwa. Ayatollah Khomeini issued the Fatwa shortly before he died, and as such is the only one who can fully rescind it, or a higher authority can rescind it, so in practice it will hold indefinitely.
