  • In my opinion this is the finest American animated film ever made. Saw for the first time as a young kid and it absolutely blew my mind. It's still as powerful many years later.

  • who does the version of heart at the end? its really good.

  • Hehehe! I love the drummer at 5:23

  • I'll always love Bakshi's work, even Cool World, I really wish that he would come out with something new in this world of digital animation and CG and many with such flat plots sugarcoating the realities of our world.

  • thank you for this movie i was 16 when this came out wow its still as good as i remembered what memories thanks again brother stevers80

  • No doubt about it... This is Ralph Bakshi's masterpiece.

  • @skeilaktheshithole why are you so obsessed with cartoons? fuck you

  • @skeilak

    Best film he made

  • oh wicked, I love the Steve Miller band

  • Take me back actually saw this in a theater on a big screen with stereo sound was awesome then and is now ranks with another Bakshi great Fritz the Cat thanks for putting out there for all to see.

  • THE BEST !!!! UUUU COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1967

  • George Scribner worked on this movie as one of the animators and he was a director on Mickey's Christmas Carol and the 1988 hit Oliver and Company and even as one of the designers for American Tail. No wonder the humans in O&C and AT look like some of the people in this movie. Even some of the animators did Chipmunk Adventure and Starchaser Legend of Orin.

  • When this movie was released I bought a lot of the cels & backrounds and some of them came with the black & white rotoscope copy of the filmed live action. It's amazing how close the real actors and the animated scenes match. Bakshi shot the whole film in black and white with real people on a sound stage (with very few props) does anyone know if that has ever been seen by anyone except those at the studio? Great film in any case.

  • @starshell1000

Does it remind you of that similar rotoscoping animation used in films like Avatar, Beowulf or Christmas Carol?

  • @Johnlindsey289 that's motion capture, dude.

  • Comment removed

  • @Johnlindsey289 Good grief!!! We got it the FIRST time you posted this, like 9 episodes ago!! No one gives a shit about uncanny valley except psychologists and obsessive geeks that need to see one.

  • Its a great film. Pete was interesting. I think he just delivered the drugs and not using them. You never see him use it, maybe I was wrong. He was just about showing his music.

  • free bird was the song they were supposed to have used instead of night moves. at least thats what i heard in a bakshi interview. he said they tripled the cost at the last minute for the rights, but free bird is in the closing credits so im confused ...

anyhow i remember seeing this in the theater when it came out, i was about 14 or so. saw it with my sister. good memories...

  • For those who are crying about the music, THIS IS FICTION, dont take it literally.

  • BOB SEIGER IS THE BESTEST

  • full piano version of night moves /watch?v=M-lzZlQBZHo

  • I like how Pete demonstrates the strengths/hopes of his predecessors (Zalmie's singing/Benny's piano playing & harmonica/Tony's song writing) plus his own unique skill with the guitar; almost as if the previous generations succeeded in their own small way in the end.

  • "I will keep. (Slam) The coke. (Click) Too! (See ya)"

  • I believe night moves was a good choice for the movie. It's a classic now. Wouldn't you agree.

  • @alizaie16 i'd agree

  • Masterpiece!!!!!!!!

  • Does anyone know what the song they intended to use was that "Night Moves" replaced?

Personally, using "Night Moves" made the scene more powerful, but still it would be cool to know what they had originally planned.

  • Great movie! Thanks to Stevers80 for this one! Can't wait to see Hey Good Lookin'

  • Heh. The punk band FEAR plays the new-wavers in the studio.

  • I saw this when it came out. Mom took us to the drive-in and it was one of the triple feature movies. I loved it then (I was 9 or 10)... It was this scene that got me briefly into Bob Seager at the time...

  • @SporeAnista

You truly are lucky. I would have loved to see this in a drive-in!

  • I think this is one of Bakshi's better works.

I think that the ending works. Pete finally makes it, realizing Zalmi's dream again.

  • @witchman67

Does the rotoscoping here remind you of what Avatar did? Cameron did a similar kind of rotoscoping animation technique.

  • I think this is one of Bakshi's better works.

  • F#@%*ng.

    Brilliant.

    Thank you.

  • I really like the ending. I think it works well with "Night Moves". I like the medley as well. A good ending for a good film.

  • I really like the ending. I think it works well with "Night Moves".

  • I watch this upload on an almost daily basis before going to work or sitting an exam. Its really makes me believe in myself and feel empowered to do better.

Pete is my all time hero.

  • Thanks, I love this movie.

  • The Best !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • There is not a single thing wrong with "Night Moves". It happens on occasion that a mediocre artist creates a masterpiece. It's known as "The Bob Seager Phenomena". Listen with out any preconceptions or prejudices. Bob is cheese but "Night Moves" is anything but.

  • your a fucking tard.... shit is fucking brilliant

  • @jpwilm1 if you wer 9 wathcing before mtv with your pops shootn dope ....before alll u baby computer fuks came around u may agree

  • workin' on my night cheese! >knock knock< i heard you singing..."night cheese".

  • @plokijuhujiko you need to watch the movie from the beginning. The guy's actually a personification of an entire generation. The movie goes through four characters, each a personification of that era/generation, and he is the end result.

  • @plokijuhujiko No need to insult the writer. Night moves wasn't the song they wanted, it was something they got stuck with because of a copyright screw up on the part of the producers/studio.

  • @Stevers80 For the anniversary they should have an alternate ending with the song they wanted. I remember readin' about that, too

  • @Stevers80 And even if that's true (that Ralph wanted some other song) it fits so well that it doesn't even matter.

  • @Stevers80 I had no problem with Night Moves being the song. The lyrics talk about not knowing who or what you are, just being in the moment and that is ok for now. Living in the moments you find is a big message of the film. At least one that I took from it.

  • Comment removed

  • U mad?

  • @plokijuhujiko it's not meant to be taken literally. It's a metaphor. Kind of like your brain, it symbolizes absence.

  • @plokijuhujiko you have to be varry young i am 42 i saw this around ten this has the sex pistols before anybody knew who they were in the u.s did u know coca dealers in the 70,s ....noooooooooooooooooooo u didnt

  • @plokijuhujiko U R MIISING THE POINT...

  • @plokijuhujiko the blue suede shoes is much more offensive to me ... not all NY coke dealers listened to Television, some of them just watched it ...

  • @plokijuhujiko Dude, shut up. It's not supposed to be a straight up telling on how the damn songs came about, the songs are there to enhance the story. Don't be such an elitist asshole. Besides, nothing's wrong with the ending as compared to how other songwriters get their start.

  • Comment removed

  • @plokijuhujiko WHY WOULD you say that ralph baski

  • this last part i think is the best. i've been born A LOT later than the action of the scene, but the " cool " factor that emanates from the blond guy is outer worldly

  • My fave movie all time!

  • one thing i couldnt quite get where did the first one come from russia?

  • @mrbattlenet --- yes, the saga starts out as a Jewish ghetto in Russia suffers a pogrom at the hands of the Czar's cossacks. The rabbi decides to finish the service, rather than escape, and is killed for his effort, leaving the wife and son to emigrate. Another American story begins!

  • name's song 4:10 To 6:00 min??

  • @montreycspro

Devil with the Blue Dress On.

  • Lee Ving and Derf Scratch doing Bob Segar? It's just as fucking scary now as it was back then! I know Derf wasn't thrilled about it.....I mean, this just spoils the entire thing for me....could'nt they at least have done Springsteen instead? When this was released Segar wasn't even relavent any more. Oh, the band there at the end? That's the Rubber City Rebals....get a load of Buzzy's flying V!

  • "Workin' on the night moves...."

  • Thanks so much for posting this awesome animated film! The last time I saw it was when it first was released in theatres in 1981.

I was only 12 then. I liked it then but really appreciate it now. I will definately by the DVD.

  • @psb1969

Quite a nice adult animated movie don't you think?

  • "What do I look like man? A soda fountain?"

  • "Year of the Cat " would've been great when he sits at the piano

  • the best in Benny!!!<3

  • Little Pete Rocks!

  • que buena pelicula ,,

  • best movie great story animation every thing the last song is free bird

  • Credit song????' plz XD

  • @RedBlueMaster last song is free bird i thing its by tom petty no sure but it is called free bird

  • ok Thanks men!!

  • Lynard Skynard

  • An excellent portrayal of music history and culture!

  • LOL, at 1:46, "DING DONG THE WITCH IS DEAD!"

That really would have left an impression! ^_^

Seriously though, this is a fantastic movie full of passion and character.

  • whats name thats music?

  • Night Moves-Bob Seger

    Blue Suede Shoes

    and

    Crazy on You - Heart

  • enorme,el gran musical!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Simply Great!! SSSS3PITOSO!! by a Pizzaman

  • Pizza maaaaan we deliveeer!!!

Great movie, it makes me think U.S. are still the country where everything is possible..

  • Awesome emotional and unique yet underrated animated cult classic. Definitely his most adult and mature movie yet!

Anyone who liked this should check out "Grave of the Fireflies", "Pink Floyd The Wall", "Rock and Rule" and "Heavy Metal" for some similar movies.

  • grave of the fireflies? isnt that by hayao miyazaki? a brilliant film, had me in tears. u obviously know a good range of films, recommend more please? peas x

  • @youngandwasted

Yup except it wasn't Miyazaki as director he was producer.

Have you seen Heavy Metal, Waking Life, Pink Floyd The Wall, Tokyo Godfathers, Rock and Rule, Perfect Blue, Hey Good Looking etc.? all good ones like American Pop.

  • Great movie/fable, but, And I apologize in advance, Bob Seger? Night moves?? as this supposedly over-the-top. superfanagorical song that "makes" TonY? I dont get it.

  • Ralph actually had another song in mind but the company screwed up on the licensing.

  • @Stevers80

Actually, it fits very well with the character if you think about it.

  • @Stevers80 what was the song?

  • @Stevers80 WHAT SONG !?

  • @Stevers80 what was it?

  • @saletious

Yeah, I think they "really" wanted Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd, but there was licensing issues.

  • @saletious The scene with Night Moves and the songs that follow it seem to represent how big the music industry became during the 1970's. They went from starving on the streets trying to write songs to playing stadiums all over the world.

  • is thir a sondtrack for this movie?

  • One of Bakshi´s greatest movies ever!

Love the music and the songs=D Even If some of them where covers, like Pretty Vacant, which is a Sex Pistols song.

  • This was Bakshi's magnum opus. Too bad it didn't get the recognition it deserved. Love the montage of the family line. Brilliant film!

  • such a wonderful film, thanks for posting this doll, much appreciated, <3 cant get over how great this film is.

  • Thank you for posting this. I had not seen any of Bakshi's movies except Lord of the Rings before, and loved this one so much :D

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I saw it when it came out, 1982 I think, great stuff, a classic

  • whole movie just completely blew me away! and hell, movie makes sense to me! it's like a chronology of ..well...american popular culture! what's more to understand? ralf's animation always blows me away. so fluent and natural.really amazing.

  • oh but its so much more than that

  • ah yer right. i agree with you. it is a very deep movie. i guess i was more replying to the people who were saying it didnt make sense so i was just saying that wasnt true. i suppose i condensced it a little too much.

  • have to watch it like 5 times

  • This has to be one of the best movies ive ever seen in my entire life.

  • This is one of the all time greatest films ever made, I love the end with the big medley and concert.

  • OK. What is the logic of including "Crazy On You" during the medley bit? First of all, don't get me wrong I love Heart & the song, but they fucking butcher it here! And compared to "Blue Suede Shoes" & "Devil With A Blue Dress", which are both more-or-less rock&roll standards, "Crazy On You" was, at the time, a recent hit. It just seems completely out of place, and the fact that they have a guy singing it, it doesn't do Heart any justice.

  • i don't think this movie was much about "logic"

  • Neither is life

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for posting this. I haven't seen it

since the early 80's when it ran on cable.

I'm pretty sure I saw it in a theater but

back then I was 11 or 12 and although

I really liked some of the songs, I was

trying to figure out what the hell was happening.

The acid freak out scene during the concert

    is pretty out there.

  • I love how the Banana icon seems to rock out to "Night Moves"!

  • Bakshi: God Of Rotoscoping

  • Gotta love Freebird!

  • All I can say is: Bakshi had magic. The Kind of Magic an visual specialist and animation director can have.

  • God, I remember growing up with the trailer for this movie in some other video I used to play alot.

I have to admit, finally seeing it, its great!

  • It was probably Bakshi's other great animation "Wizards" it was about a year before this one and the work he did on Heavy Metal.

  • I don't think Bakshi had anything to do with Heavy Metal.

  • Thanks for the correction. I looked and looked but it does appear Bakshi did not contribute to HM though I recall an outtake from HM that suggested some of his artwork had been used. I am however quite certain that it is his artwork in "Wizards". His work is also seen in the movie "Cool World" if you are an afficionado of his work.

  • I'm actually majoring in Film for my B.A. I wasn't a big fan before, but I'm starting to get into the work of guys like Bakshi, Don Bluth and the like. I actually own a copy of Heavy Metal, so I was able to point that out. After watching this, I will definitely have to start looking through his stuff again. Thanks for the suggestions.

  • No problem, happy to contribute to youth who want to learn culture. A great animation, not Bakshi, but still well worth a looksee if you can find it, is The Secret of NIMH. The original Hobbit animation too. A summer film in '77 a little before "Wizards" has some awesome artwork in it too. What I'd think awesome would be to digitize the old Hobbit film and make it like a Pixar film and do the same thing with the LOTRs and make a trilogy in the Pixar format. I think box office explosion, Huh?!?

  • Sure. Especially since Pixar's RenderMan software was used heavily in the live-action trilogy (look how awesome that turned out!).

As for NIMH, I grew up with that one and currently own it on DVD as well as another Don Bluth movie, Titan A.E. (still looking for widescreen versions of American Tail and Land Before Time, though).

Still, thanks for your suggestions. :)

  • @ForceMaximus84

Have you seen any Ghibli movies? they make awesome animated masterpieces.

  • @Johnlindsey289 Princess Mononoke and about to watch Nausicaa!

  • @ForceMaximus84

Oh Nausicaa is awesome, it's one of the true movies with Mononoke that influenced Avatar and you will see similarities.

  • found this dvd on amazon.. just ordered it cant wait for it to get here. fell in love with this movie back in the summer of 98 when it was released on video.. a true american classic

  • Damn, this movie was pretty freakin' cool. Love the music; definitely buying it on DVD.

  • Good Luck finding it! it is not on every shelf at video stores. You find it, let me know....

  • what is the name of the song of the credits?

  • Comment removed

  • free bird of LYNYRD SKYNYRD!!!OF R.E.M.???

Why do you even answer if you have no clue at all

It's already bad not know who made that song, but even thinking it could be of rem is worst!how does it even sound rem to you?and in 1981 rem were just formed!

  • Why is this movie So unknown??

is so captivating and beautiful and well written and...is so great!

  • no words could better describe it

  • The flick came out in 1980. The publicity was not very good, and it slipped through the cracks. I was 12 when I saw it on cable....

  • it's a shame cause you know,this movie has it all :D

Only the release of the cd-DVD would have done MILLIONS

  • I'm not into them, but if they decided to make this film into a Musical I would so watch it.

  • Night Moves sounds better with the piano scoring

  • My God I 've thought the same since I heard the real Tune (after discovering it On this Movie)

  • Oh my god, Roy P Disney was on the production staff. (8:20) Imagine a member of the Disney family working for Bakshi.

By the way, I love the decision to play Freebird during the closing credits.

  • Like grandfather, like grandson

  • I love 80's American animation! American needs to bring back 2-D animation movies!

  • then lets pray for the miracle

  • @lilrog0909

2D is back thanks to the success of The Simpsons Movie and Princess and The Frog! even Secret of Kellis is sucessful and what do you think of Ghibli movies a.k.a. Hayao Miyazaki's animated movies like Spirited Away, Ponyo ( a mild success here in the US but bigger in Japan), Howl's Moving Castle, etc.

  • @Johnlindsey289

Anime is ok for whenever I want to watch something outside of American culture. I would love to see someone take Eek the cat & make a 2D rated PG-13 movie out it. I love the 2D Marvel/DC movies that have been coming out lately.

    My favorite 2D's:

    All Dogs Go to Heaven

    Eek the cat

    Ren & Stimpy

    Bobby's World

    BeBe Kids

  • @lilrog0909

What do you think of Akira, Ghost in The Shell, Grave of the Fireflies (Very sad and powerful WWII animated movie), Ninja Scroll, Fist of the North Star, Princess Mononoke etc.? great stuff eh?

  • Now why can't they make films this one again?

  • Thanks so much for posting, Stevers80. I've watched several movies and several genres and I can say with confidence now that this is probably in my top 10 favorite movies lol.

    Thanks again.

  • ELVIs??? hahahah yea... Carl Perkins..Not elvis. Carl Perkins....look him up. AMERICAN POP is pure genuis...I saw it when it first came out...

Covers nearly every music category in american modern history. Its pure genuis.

  • thanks for the information, greenwoodtea, i checked him out. didnt know who he was and that he was a pioneer of the rockabilly. take care.

  • i love how they added the saxaphone in Crazy

    i love that song

  • 8:18

  • What, Roy Disney helped on this project?

  • this blows my entire mind away. this is great.

if they had the oscar for best animated feat. back then, this would have won the award in 81

that how much i love it:D

  • And like all great parties, it ends with freebird. Epic movie, more ppl should know of its existance.

  • I wanted to see this movie since it came out.

I wonder what an 11 year-old would have thought of it had I seen it then.

  • i was 12 when i first saw it

it came on cineamax late night before my 7th grade year started

i loved it i was obsessed

  • I think it would have ended better with "Rock and Roll Fantasy".

  • I get the feeling that the ending was very abrupt and that there should have been about 10 more minutes of story. the production ran out of money, maybe?

  • @voidingindigo

what could they add? he made it big and did what the rest of his family couldn't it ends perfectly

  • I would love to see a live action remake

  • one of the millions of other great movies that got egnored

  • I think more people should check this movie out. Its insane. Its so awesome. Thanks for posting american pop. Its a classic

  • pure poery

  • whats that song hes playing in the studieo

  • The name of the song you searched is "night moves" by bob seger.Bye from the italy my friend

  • I can't wait to see it! Still waiting for amazon to send it!
