In my opinion this is the finest American animated film ever made. Saw for the first time as a young kid and it absolutely blew my mind. It's still as powerful many years later.
I'll always love Bakshi's work, even Cool World, I really wish that he would come out with something new in this world of digital animation and CG and many with such flat plots sugarcoating the realities of our world.

Take me back actually saw this in a theater on a big screen with stereo sound was awesome then and is now ranks with another Bakshi great Fritz the Cat thanks for putting out there for all to see.
George Scribner worked on this movie as one of the animators and he was a director on Mickey's Christmas Carol and the 1988 hit Oliver and Company and even as one of the designers for American Tail. No wonder the humans in O&C and AT look like some of the people in this movie. Even some of the animators did Chipmunk Adventure and Starchaser Legend of Orin.
When this movie was released I bought a lot of the cels & backrounds and some of them came with the black & white rotoscope copy of the filmed live action. It's amazing how close the real actors and the animated scenes match. Bakshi shot the whole film in black and white with real people on a sound stage (with very few props) does anyone know if that has ever been seen by anyone except those at the studio? Great film in any case.
@Johnlindsey289 Good grief!!! We got it the FIRST time you posted this, like 9 episodes ago!! No one gives a shit about uncanny valley except psychologists and obsessive geeks that need to see one.

I like how Pete demonstrates the strengths/hopes of his predecessors (Zalmie's singing/Benny's piano playing & harmonica/Tony's song writing) plus his own unique skill with the guitar; almost as if the previous generations succeeded in their own small way in the end.
I saw this when it came out. Mom took us to the drive-in and it was one of the triple feature movies. I loved it then (I was 9 or 10)... It was this scene that got me briefly into Bob Seager at the time...
I watch this upload on an almost daily basis before going to work or sitting an exam. Its really makes me believe in myself and feel empowered to do better.
There is not a single thing wrong with "Night Moves". It happens on occasion that a mediocre artist creates a masterpiece. It's known as "The Bob Seager Phenomena". Listen with out any preconceptions or prejudices. Bob is cheese but "Night Moves" is anything but.

yeah, that's right, a coke dealer from the the late 70's New York scene comes up with...Night Moves...yeah...um..thats how it happens...um...crap. This movie would've been awesome if it had been written by someone that actually researched American music. It was still okay though. It just had a silly, nonsensical ending.
@plokijuhujiko you need to watch the movie from the beginning. The guy's actually a personification of an entire generation. The movie goes through four characters, each a personification of that era/generation, and he is the end result.
@plokijuhujiko No need to insult the writer. Night moves wasn't the song they wanted, it was something they got stuck with because of a copyright screw up on the part of the producers/studio.
@Stevers80 I had no problem with Night Moves being the song. The lyrics talk about not knowing who or what you are, just being in the moment and that is ok for now. Living in the moments you find is a big message of the film. At least one that I took from it.

Thanks for the correction. I looked and looked but it does appear Bakshi did not contribute to HM though I recall an outtake from HM that suggested some of his artwork had been used. I am however quite certain that it is his artwork in "Wizards". His work is also seen in the movie "Cool World" if you are an afficionado of his work.

No problem, happy to contribute to youth who want to learn culture. A great animation, not Bakshi, but still well worth a looksee if you can find it, is The Secret of NIMH. The original Hobbit animation too. A summer film in '77 a little before "Wizards" has some awesome artwork in it too. What I'd think awesome would be to digitize the old Hobbit film and make it like a Pixar film and do the same thing with the LOTRs and make a trilogy in the Pixar format. I think box office explosion, Huh?!?
Sure. Especially since Pixar's RenderMan software was used heavily in the live-action trilogy (look how awesome that turned out!).
As for NIMH, I grew up with that one and currently own it on DVD as well as another Don Bluth movie, Titan A.E. (still looking for widescreen versions of American Tail and Land Before Time, though).
found this dvd on amazon.. just ordered it cant wait for it to get here. fell in love with this movie back in the summer of 98 when it was released on video.. a true american classic
Why do you even answer if you have no clue at all
It's already bad not know who made that song, but even thinking it could be of rem is worst!how does it even sound rem to you?and in 1981 rem were just formed!
2D is back thanks to the success of The Simpsons Movie and Princess and The Frog! even Secret of Kellis is sucessful and what do you think of Ghibli movies a.k.a. Hayao Miyazaki's animated movies like Spirited Away, Ponyo ( a mild success here in the US but bigger in Japan), Howl's Moving Castle, etc.
Anime is ok for whenever I want to watch something outside of American culture. I would love to see someone take Eek the cat & make a 2D rated PG-13 movie out it. I love the 2D Marvel/DC movies that have been coming out lately.
What do you think of Akira, Ghost in The Shell, Grave of the Fireflies (Very sad and powerful WWII animated movie), Ninja Scroll, Fist of the North Star, Princess Mononoke etc.? great stuff eh?
Thanks so much for posting, Stevers80. I've watched several movies and several genres and I can say with confidence now that this is probably in my top 10 favorite movies lol.
I get the feeling that the ending was very abrupt and that there should have been about 10 more minutes of story. the production ran out of money, maybe?
In my opinion this is the finest American animated film ever made. Saw for the first time as a young kid and it absolutely blew my mind. It's still as powerful many years later.

I think box office explosion, Huh?!?
stralien51 2 years ago
Still, thanks for your suggestions. :)

The flick came out in 1980. The publicity was not very good, and it slipped through the cracks. I was 12 when I saw it on cable....

it's a shame cause you know, this movie has it all :D
Only the release of the cd-DVD would have done MILLIONS

Oh my god, Roy P Disney was on the production staff. (8:20) Imagine a member of the Disney family working for Bakshi.
By the way, I love the decision to play Freebird during the closing credits.

Johnlindsey289 1 year ago
@Johnlindsey289
Anime is ok for whenever I want to watch something outside of American culture. I would love to see someone take Eek the cat & make a 2D rated PG-13 movie out it. I love the 2D Marvel/DC movies that have been coming out lately.
My favorite 2D's:
All Dogs Go to Heaven
Eek the cat
Ren & Stimpy
Bobby's World
BeBe Kids

I think it would have ended better with "Rock and Roll Fantasy".
spikefivefivefive 2 years ago
I get the feeling that the ending was very abrupt and that there should have been about 10 more minutes of story. the production ran out of money, maybe?
