I have a Simmons 3x9 AO mounted on a dovetail-to-weaver adapter and low weaver rings which gets it up enough to get a good sight picture without too much parallax issues. I fill mine to about 150 BAR and so far my best 25yd. 10 group is with 25.4 JSB Jumbo monsters: all into one ragged hole at ctc .78in :))
I haven't chony'd these but my best guess is that they are going about 700fps?
most fun I've had with nearly any rifle ever. :)))
@MrCoolskills86 I just tested mine today. Starting at 2000 psi, I took 25 shots using Crosman Hollow Points 14.3. Fastest was 819, slowest was 806. extreme spread 13 fps. 1st shot 510, last shot 515. Bodes well for accuracy. Works out to be about 21-22 FPE at the muzzle. I am not sure what the BC of the CHPs are. I have seen numbers from 0.036 to 0.022, so I am using 0.028 for my calcs.
Hopefully this weekend I will have time to do some testing & filming.
Watching your two-part video, we really don't see any redeeming qualities in the Marauder, compared to most high-end air-guns, especially using a scope! It's simply too noisy without suppressor and its velocities are simply too slow to hold any degree of constant accuracy, which is A Big Deal! On a one to ten, we’d give the Marauder a generous 3...a mediocre gun at best. There are plenty of other true QUALITY air-guns that easily exceeds this inaccurate slowpoke!
I'm not sure what your issue is.. and you are certainly welcome.. but do try to be constructive.. for the price, the discovery is a great gun. It's not a $2000 FX.. it runs under $400 for all you need to shoot PCP. I have been and still am, thrilled with my Disco..
@1LonePuma well in my opinion (havent bought a pcp yet but am planning buying one soon) is that these arent meant to be "high end" pcp air rifles their just the more reasonably priced ones, though i know theres better air rifles out there i consider that most customers will want the least expensive alternative over the high end guns you speak of, most beginners will appreciate the more reasonably prices and since its just for fun, some accuracy and power can be left without in my opinion.
Very good gun.. velocity was in the high 700 low 800 from my memory.. I still own this gut but it is at my ranch in TX. I plan on bringing it back with me on my next trip and giving doing another video on it.
@AirGunWeb Yes definitely do another review, I own this gun and it proves to be very nice. My velocities were around 850 with 14.3's with about 35 good shots if anyone else was wondering.
@AirGunWeb Dang.... I really need a quiet airgun to use in my backyard. In my backyard is a river with a steep ravine and it just escalates the noise. I swear it sounds like a .22 LR. Everything I shoot echos and sounds supersonic even though I know it isnt. Even my Crosman 1377 is very loud.
@AirGunWeb Man... I really want a Marauder, but I just don't want to have to deal with filling up a scuba tank, saying to my mom "ohh hey, can i go buy a $150 scuba tank?" Plus the price is just under $500 for the gun. I realize it's beautifully made, easily accurate to 80 yards and extremely quiet. What I'll probably do is get a Benjamin Trail Np... The Np Xl simply has too much recoil to be easily accurate.
@AirGunWeb I ended up getting the Stoeger X20 Suppressor .22. It was $179 and came with 1000 H&N pellets. It's supposedly the quietest airgun on the market. Tests showed that once its broken in, it shoots around 94db. 7db less than the Benjamin Trail Np.
The X20s is a very nice gun. it is an interesting marketing game with "noise" vs "quiet." While the gas ram may spike the DB meter a bit higher, the short duration of the sound and the lack of secondary "spring" noise makes the NP "seem" quieter. I got into a "discussion" with Crosman over this when I tested their Titan and found it to be louder than my other "quiet" guns. The Stoeger X20s gets better as you shoot it. My x20s is at 96 right now vs my "tuned" trail at 97.
@AirGunWeb Stoeger has a video of the x20s shooting at 71db in an anechoic chamber but theyre tests show 94 db.. I don't know how the heck thats possible and I know it cant be true... I just hope this air gun isn't as loud as my WFH .25 and Beeman RS2 .177 & .22. I want something that wont disturb my neighbors.. or people out jogging 100 yards away..
I want to get this gun but I want a cheap way of filling it with compressed air I have a compressor but I cant seem to find a adapter do they make adapters to fill the discovery with a compressor?
That is because your compressor only goes to 150 psi.. the Discovery needs 2000 psi.. You have to pump it with a special pump or get setup with a scuba tank setup.
The 15.8 would be my best.. other good options would be the crosman premier hollow points, H&N Field Target Trophies, and the Beeman Kodiaks.. It will depend on the individual rifle as to which is the best, most accurate, option.
quick question rick. well maybe its quick what is the difference between the Discovery and the Katana I know the stocks are interchangeable. but other then that I can't really see much difference.
Actually.. I think the Katana and the Marauder are the more of the same rifle.. the Katana is the Marauder without the barrel shroud from what I can see.
When I'm shooting these videos.. I'm shooting "groups" not for the bullseye. I aim at the bullseye every time and test to see how closely the shots land together. Each pellet hits differently and I don't adjust the scope for every pellet. Once I'm done testing and I'm going to keep the rifle, I may adjust the scope dead center... but even that is relative given temperature, wind, air pressure, pellet weight.. etc..
hi could you recomend some air rifle that should cost about 400-500 dollar and it has to be atleast 5.5mm and pcp whit a clip and really accurcy and geat for hunting. plese it would help a lot and what should i think about when im buying a new air rifle my old one was a norica massimo 4.5mm . =)
@bomanio1 If you dont have a pump already i would go with a discovery because not only is it a good gun but it comes with a pump... with a good scope your total would be around 400. it might not have a clip but if your a good shot you wont need the follow up shot. plus with practice your follow up can be really quick
@SilentSalvation1995 I would go with the discovery... i find shooting pcps are much more fun to shoot because it is more like a real firearm (with springers you have to have the same hold EVERYTIME to obtain good accuracy)... not only that but 40 shots per fill up is nice considering it is only 2000 psi and is not a real big hassel to fill up like a 3000 psi pcp.
How does an illuminated reticle scope work? I know it is battery operated but what if you dont want to waste battery when shooting during the summer? Basically can you turn the light on and off?
hey rick,i want to buy this gun but i heard its loud.i heard that if i was to put a tko muzzle brake that would help with noise...but is that necesarry?
Sorry im goin to ask you again, do u think that i could pump it by myself, i mean im pretty strong but it really about how much u weigh. im eather going to buy this or the rws 48 but i want a pcp too, thanks alot man
i have to say that the Benjamin discovery is the worst pcp airgun i have ever owned. the trigger and trigger guard are plastic, the bolt is quite flimsy and the quality and finish of the stock is well below average, i have owned £60 airguns which are of superior quality to this gun. anyone who is a serious airgun enthusiast should not buy this rifle but save up a little bit more money for a higher quality, european air rifle
The Discovery has a lot to be desired.. but as a starter rifle for less that half the cost of a European rifle (including the pump) allows people to "get their feet wet" regarding pcp rifles. While mine has all the short comings you mention, it has a few things going for it: I can shoot 1" groups (or less) at 60 yards, very compact and lightweight, high velocity (840 fps in .22) with 2000 psi, low entry cost.
Cheers.
Rick
p.s. No doubt the European PCPs are vastly better.
I respectfully disagree... no doubt that there are far better made pcp rifles out there. But you can get the rifle and the pump for under $400 which is well below 1/2 what most European rifles will cost, then you still need a pump. Also by using only 2000 psi, you make it available to a far wider range of shooters. It is a "get your foot in the door" rifle, not the last PCP you'll buy.
Hey Rick. I am thinking about getting a disco, but I've heard a lot of bad things about the pump. People say that it gets locked in the down position so they have to get another pump. I was wondering if this happens often and whether or not it should determine if I should get the gun or not. Also, are there any other pumps that are compatible with the Disco? Thanks
I've had my disco for a while and have not had any issues with the pump.. but I'm very careful with it.. it is not a bike pump.. it can't get dirty, and can't take abuse. The AirVenturi Pump is also nice, but you'll need the quick disconnect kit from PyarmydAir for it to work with the disco.
@headhunter1996 Hi headhunter. I have a storm xt myself. Please, please, please do not waste your time/money/effort on this rifle. It has terrible grouping with low quality as well as high quality pellets. Just put some extra money into it and get something like the discovery or an RWS rifle. It will be worth it in the long run and you will be much happier with it. Trust me, it's not fun hunting and missing your target because your pellets fly everywhere.
Nice Video as always. Do you know if I can get my Benjamin Discovery filled up at a local Paintball shop? My rifle is not accepting any pcp air, so I want to see if my pump is the problem or my gun. Thanks
you should be able to.. I thought my pump failed at one point.. but then I realized that the entire base is "screwed" in and it had worked out some.. once it was screwed back together it was all good.. haven't had an issue since.. something to check out.
hey rick the peep site doesent fit , but my dad has a 5-20 mag scope. its ok in brush but its realy nice. this week ive got 3 western gray squrrel and 4 quail.
man i've gotta say... the JSB pellets are just magic, aren't they? they always seem to shoot at least good in just about every rifle. and i've seen too many rifles that just shoot them the best. mine certainly does.
Hey I love your vids but i have a question. My question is can you put the crossman peep sight on it. It says it is for current benjamin models. If you can you make a video on this subject. Since i hunt in heavy timber 30 yards or less i hunt squirrels and enormous ravens which are the size on the average chikens. Thank you.
hey can yo PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do a review on the gamo viper express air shotgun? i have been looking everywhere for the accuracy with the pellets from a farther distance than 10 yards
you'd have to really over pump it...just don't go over 2000 psi. You can take squirrels out to 70 and 80 yards with the right pellet and some practice.
hey so is that the discovery right ok its like 400 but i dont know if i wanna get this or the Benjamin .177 Pump Air Rifle can you help me im looking into killing squirrel and coon is it powerful enough/
all depends on the purpose.. the Discovery is a great rifle in its own right. It is not as refined as the Marauder, but it is a great gun and the price is impossible to beat. If you get the discovery pump.. it will work for both rifles.
yep... and heavy pellets at 800 fps deliver even more energy... shot the marauder yesterday and saw 800 FPS with 21.1 grn. kodiak pellets... very nearly 30 foot pounds.
MY GOD! i thought the Disco was 25 foot-pounds at the max. i had no idea! that stuff would be good for raccoons and stuff.
are the Kodiaks any accurate in your gun?
oh and how much heavier is the Marauder than the Discovery? i'm seriously thinking about getting a PCP soon, and i really want the Marauder but i wanna know how heavy it is so i can know what to expect out in the field. i plan to put that Leapers 6-24x50 Varmint scope on the gun.
you may want to get wheels for it.. lol.. good news is that they at least put sling studs on it.. good for a bipod mount too. which is how I have mind setup.
wow..6-24x50? dang u gonna go turn into a sniper huh..seriously man..24 power?id go with a 3-12 power scope..i have that on my 357 mag. single shot rifle..and that scope has just enough power for shooting deer at 100-130 yards..
a 22 short has 42 foot pounds...30 ft pounds is ALOT of power for an airgun..i know u could drop a raccoon with that gun..at least knock it out of the tree...then u let ur coon dogs handle the rest..lol
the manual for each rifle will lay out what you need to do to keep the gun in working order. it will also tell you what NOT to do.. so it is important to READ THE FREAKING MANUAL (RTFM for short)... I hate having to do it to.. but each rifle will be a little bit different...
Hey is this gun basically as good as the maruader or is the maruader worth the extra 300 dollars. Do you know if a metal zip tie thing would fix the barrel flex. I either want this gun or the maruader and the sound isn't a problem. thanks! Also how fast does the .22 cal maruader shoot. thanks again!
there is a night and day difference in the two guns.. the Discover is a great PCP rifle and the kit is a great value. the Marauder is for serious airgunners that want more. You can tune a .22 to shoot in the high 900 FPS ranges.. and you can use 3000 psi for more shots.. the rifle has the nicest trigger and it has a fully choked barrel giving it incredible accuracy... and it is also virtually silent.. truly a beautiful gun.
hey, im ordering this gun soon but i stuck on which caliber to choose. My primary use would be small game like squirrels etc. with that you'd say .22 but target shooying sounds fun to. i really just dont like the sound of 900 fps vs. 1000. i do know caliber counts tho. what do you think? i just need a little background help to boost my decision.
I appreciate your videos. Thank you for sharing your impartial experience and opinions. I have a tuned Marauder on its way - I'm worse than Ralphie right now. :)
Dude quit using so many different types of pellets. You need to pick a certain type of pellet round that has speed, power, and accuracy so you can set your scope with that. Your scope would be alot more accurate if you did it. Use other types of pellets to just mess around with. I go squirl hunting with mine and I use the FTS Beeman Double Gold .22 for hunting, and Crossman Pointed for messing around with.
I show the different types of pellets so that people can see how they each group differently. Once I find the best pellet for the rifle, I zero my scope to that pellet and lock it down.
me and my brother-in-law both bought the benjamin discovery i got the 2.2 and he got the 177. we tried a couple of different pellets but at the moment the RWS Superdome 22=14.5g 177=8.3g the grouping at 25yards 1/4" my 22 is getting 50-60 177 45-50 shots b4 each fill the pump is the only pain lol but we love the gun its great
Why won't you just put some duct tape around the barrel and make sure it's tight so the barrel won't shift, not sure if it will work but it might, or just go and by another barrel clamp.
nope, it is always written psi. could just be "per square inch."
as for always using Rick. it is part of being polite. oh and I like to use a lot of characters in my comments just to make sure that I get the most of what youtube will allow me to write. I'm really happy when I can use all 500. so when I get to put "Rick" at the end of everything I write it gives me great joy to be able to use as many characters as possible. isn't that a whole lot of fun.? (almost done)
Hey Rick, I wondering would you recommend this gun as a good first PCP rifle? Ive been looking at them for awhile now, and I dont wanna drop $1000+ for air arms S410 (not right now anyway lol) but I was wondering if this gun is worth buying into. Mostly for pest removal and medium to longe range target shooting, and I would like to stay in .22cal
The Discovery kit is right up your alley. Great power, accuracy, and great price. You can upgrade to the Marauder (which I shot today... wow.. what a gun) later on.
Last fall I was pondering the purchase of a 22 cal air rifle. I had several that I was looking at and was leaning towards choosing the Discovery but wasn't too sure, but when I saw this review I decided to go for it.
I am pleased with the gun though I also wish the trigger was a bit nicer, but for hunting use it is just fine.
thank you again rick ( and naomi ) for a great review but i also have et another question. im wondering the same as always if this gun has a hard durable stock? what the max velocity you have ever had with it is? also would you recomend this as a great pcp .22 hunting rifle? and finally would you recomend this over the Walther Falcon Hunter?
Pump, PCP, CO2, yes.. spring powered guns like break barrels, side lever, and under lever.. most likely not unless the scope specifically says you can. Most hunting scopes are not designed to take the reverse recoil generated by today's powerful spring guns.
800fps sounds quite powerful for .22 Air Rifle - I was looking at one here in England, but our limit is 12ft.lbs, so that would make the velocity more like 600fps. Is this the case or would our ones be the same? If not, did you calculate the muzzle energy of yours? Thanks!
what you can do is fill the rifle up with CO2. this is actually a duel-fuel airgun, where you can fill the gun with CO2 from the standard paintball tank. also, you get more shots per fill. the only problem with CO2 is that it isn't very powerful at all. in fact, i think, if you buy the .177 version, the CO2 fill goes below 12 foot-pounds. that makes it legal for you. the only problem is that velocity claims of the gun are made only with high-pressure air... that's the only problem.
You should do a reveiw on .177 .cal bemjaman I want to know if this gun is loud at all like springers, how many ft lbs it has and what is the max velocity on .177 caliber. And what does ft lbs mean. thanks.
This is way louder than a break barrel gun. I prefer .22.. they are more accurate at longer ranges and they hit harder. As for FT LBS, that is the amount of force put on the target when the object strikes it.. heavier pellet... generally means more force.
cute little girl u got there

the .177 is going to shoot faster.. the .22 is the better bet if you plan to do any hunting. .177 if you want to shoot paper.

hi could you recomend some air rifle that should cost about 400-500 dollar and it has to be atleast 5.5mm and pcp whit a clip and really accurcy and geat for hunting. plese it would help a lot and what should i think about when im buying a new air rifle my old one was a norica massimo 4.5mm . =)

@bomanio1
look into the Halestorm or the Marauder.
Rick
AirGunWeb 1 year ago
@bomanio1 If you dont have a pump already i would go with a discovery because not only is it a good gun but it comes with a pump... with a good scope your total would be around 400. it might not have a clip but if your a good shot you wont need the follow up shot. plus with practice your follow up can be really quick
AgoobyGOOBER 1 year ago
This without a scope or the RWS 350 striker combo?
SilentSalvation1995 1 year ago
@SilentSalvation1995
350 striker combo... I love the discovery... but if I had to choose between the two it would be the 350 for sure.
rick
AirGunWeb 1 year ago
@SilentSalvation1995 I would go with the discovery... i find shooting pcps are much more fun to shoot because it is more like a real firearm (with springers you have to have the same hold EVERYTIME to obtain good accuracy)... not only that but 40 shots per fill up is nice considering it is only 2000 psi and is not a real big hassel to fill up like a 3000 psi pcp.
AgoobyGOOBER 1 year ago
How does an illuminated reticle scope work? I know it is battery operated but what if you dont want to waste battery when shooting during the summer? Basically can you turn the light on and off?

stephcrouch1 1 year ago
@stephcrouch1
this rifle is very easy to pump up.. if you weigh 130 or so, you should be able to get to the 2000 psi easy enough..
Rick
AirGunWeb 1 year ago
i have to say that the Benjamin discovery is the worst pcp airgun i have ever owned. the trigger and trigger guard are plastic, the bolt is quite flimsy and the quality and finish of the stock is well below average, i have owned £60 airguns which are of superior quality to this gun. anyone who is a serious airgun enthusiast should not buy this rifle but save up a little bit more money for a higher quality, european air rifle
jakeyrich 1 year ago
@jakeyrich
AirGunWeb 1 year ago
@jakeyrich
Cheers.

Thanks
timscott61495 1 year ago
@timscott61495
Cheers.

Trust me, it's not fun hunting and missing your target because your pellets fly everywhere.

the manual for each rifle will lay out what you need to do to keep the gun in working order. it will also tell you what NOT to do.. so it is important to READ THE FREAKING MANUAL (RTFM for short)... I hate having to do it to.. but each rifle will be a little bit different...

Thatkid5465 2 years ago
there is a night and day difference in the two guns.. the Discover is a great PCP rifle and the kit is a great value. the Marauder is for serious airgunners that want more. You can tune a .22 to shoot in the high 900 FPS ranges.. and you can use 3000 psi for more shots.. the rifle has the nicest trigger and it has a fully choked barrel giving it incredible accuracy... and it is also virtually silent.. truly a beautiful gun.

- What height are your scope rings (L,M.H)?

Dude quit using so many different types of pellets. You need to pick a certain type of pellet round that has speed, power, and accuracy so you can set your scope with that. Your scope would be alot more accurate if you did it. Use other types of pellets to just mess around with. I go squirl hunting with mine and I use the FTS Beeman Double Gold .22 for hunting, and Crossman Pointed for messing around with.
airbornedude101 2 years ago
I show the different types of pellets so that people can see how they each group differently. Once I find the best pellet for the rifle, I zero my scope to that pellet and lock it down.

Why won't you just put some duct tape around the barrel and make sure it's tight so the barrel won't shift, not sure if it will work but it might, or just go and by another barrel clamp.
MarineRaider1996 2 years ago
P.S.I. does stand for 'per square inch" because you usually say what weight before P.S.I. like 3000 P.S.I.

as for always using Rick. it is part of being polite. oh and I like to use a lot of characters in my comments just to make sure that I get the most of what youtube will allow me to write. Last fall I was pondering the purchase of a 22 cal air rifle. I had several that I was looking at and was leaning towards choosing the Discovery but wasn't too sure, but when I saw this review I decided to go for it.

Thanks!
Wowo460 2 years ago
You are looking at 20+ food pounds with this rifle easy.
Rick
AirGunWeb 2 years ago
what you can do is fill the rifle up with CO2. this is actually a duel-fuel airgun, where you can fill the gun with CO2 from the standard paintball tank. also, you get more shots per fill. the only problem with CO2 is that it isn't very powerful at all. in fact, i think, if you buy the .177 version, the CO2 fill goes below 12 foot-pounds. that makes it legal for you. the only problem is that velocity claims of the gun are made only with high-pressure air... that's the only problem.
AirgunAddict256 2 years ago
You should do a reveiw on .177 .cal bemjaman I want to know if this gun is loud at all like springers, how many ft lbs it has and what is the max velocity on .177 caliber. And what does ft lbs mean. thanks.
PBAProAir 2 years ago
This is way louder than a break barrel gun. I prefer .22.. they are more accurate at longer ranges and they hit harder. As for FT LBS, that is the amount of force put on the target when the object strikes it.. heavier pellet... generally means more force.
