@TwilightFadez I totally agree with you ....i like all there albums and have been a fan for a long time....this just brings back good memories cause i seen them live in Sydney around this time....:D
@IlliterateSage I feel like like its like a mix of the two cuz i assume this is when he started changing around the lyrics of the demo version but it still has some of the original lyrics. however, the solos are a little different and the speed is like the one from Pisces Iscariot. So no its not too much like the demo version but its still pretty close to the PI version.
I don't understand the oldschool pumpkins comments. They were always awesome, and gradually changing. How could you not appreciate all of their songs? Some of them are off here and there towards the end, or maybe in completely, but for the most part (as a loyal fan) I found them awesome. Machina was one of their best albums and they implemented everything they learned on them. You should listen to it again. I'm only leaving this comment cause they were awesome completely.
Ah, the days of dresses, long tresses and raw, intense performances. If I had to say anything about the newest incarnation of The Smashing Pumpkins, it's that I don't see that unruly passion I'd find in their non-soft songs. Where's the screaming? Where's the screw-hitting-the-right-notes, I'll-sing-how-I-feel? I don't see the angst any more.
Billy focuses his insecurity on talking about how so many people don't "get" or "respect" what he's doing now with his band. Spare me, please, spare me the whining in interviews and knock me off my seat with your qualms in your music! People said to me always, he whines when he sings and I never felt that way,. But man, can that man whine in interviews. Nobody loves me...you're wrong. There are people who are right there with you. Embrace us, don't belittle us.
i dont know if you realize that Billy isn't that 25 year old anymore, he's 43 years old, i dont think he has much to be angsty about. People need to realize that people move on in their life and things change, he's not gonna write another "Disarm" or "Today".
@shatteringglass Please don't put me in that category.I know all about the argument that he's not young any more + people change + he's not going to repeat his earlier work.I may not have said it clearly enough in my comment, but my point is,he's constantly talking about sadness over people not getting it,how so many people aren't right there with him throughout whatever he does, how there's so much criticism. These are things he's "angsty" about. He Does have angst he can write about. Why not?
I heard BC and Jimmy talk to myself and a small group of people on the 20th Anniversary Tour during a meet and great, and they talked candidly for about 45 minutes, including about the lack of interest/support whatever you want to call it from fans, I cant really summarize that whole conversation, but I can tell you I walked away from that with a whole new understanding of what the band was going thru and I honestly felt BAD for them.
@shatteringglass Wow,you're really lucky. To talk about that subject, extra lucky.I've dealt with my own bashers here on YouTube for my vids.At first I'd go at it with them, but i learned quickly THEY'RE NOT WORTH IT.I had it on a small scale. What must it be like on a grand scale like the Pumpkins have? There was an interview in 98 with Billy in which he discussed public opinion and just simply said"I don't care.I'm just gonna do what I wanna do.If you like it great,if you don't fuck off"
This attitude surrounding the band now reminds me of when Adore came out. I became a fan when Mellon Collie came out, my first show was an Adore tour show. The band got a lot of crap for Adore which it didnt deserve at the time, but now those same fans treat Adore as it should of when it was released, as an amazing piece of work, but where the hell where these "fans" in 1998?
@shatteringglass I actually have had a wonderful attachment to that album.Besides just plain being good,it helped me + my little brother b/c it came out at just the right time for us.We related so much to the themes + feel.My Grandpa died, right after that my little Pumpkins fan brother got Cancer,I was dealing with the aftermath of severe child abuse + it all just fit.I turned to that album for comfort + inspiration as did Matty. He called all SP's quiet songs "Billybyes"It helped a 4 year old!
When my brothers and I would sit in the car at night in Grandpa's driveway while Mom closed up the house (we were tending to it and packing things after he died) we played The French Movie Theme to comfort Matty b/c he was scared in the dark +when he was a baby I'd sing their songs to help him get to sleep.I 1st realized he liked the music when he'd bounce around happily when I played them. Then as he grew up quickly b/c of Granpa's death + his Cancer + SP suddenly meant something lyrically too.
@shatteringglass And just for the sake of conversing, where do you stand regarding the rest of my comment that was passed over for pulling out the point of he's not 25 any more? I think there's often so much focus on that because SO many people just want things the way they were.I was talking about the feeling of a lack of passion in the new material. What are your thoughts on the other things I said?Just curious.Don't want a fight like so many people tend to enjoy.
Personally, Im sick of the fans whining ,too. And dont say they aren't because they most certainly are, Ive read it online and heard it in person at numerous shows. Things aren't going to be the way they were, so either stick with the band because you like the new music and direction the band is going, or leave it alone and put your Siamese Dream on repeat in your CD player or Ipod. But dont go to shows expecting SP circa 94 because thats not what your gonna get
@shatteringglass Oh I know. It's amazing the fans of the same band can be so off with that. But just like with anything anyone is a fan with, you're gonna get all types of people...and unfortunately with the Smashing Pumpkins, you'll have these people. They're gonna whine, they're gonna pine for the past because for them, apparently it was so good.(I don't blame them for embarrassing the past)But Billy has never been shy about saying we're not going to repeat,so they should've expected it.
I prefer evolution.I'm not saying I'm not a fan any more,I'm not saying I don't like their new materialThat's not me, + I certainly don't whine about change. As long as Billy writes from the heart I'm on board. That heart is what led me to be the person I am today - yes, music has helped shape me,not afraid to admit that. It's what has made me do the art I do + not give a crap about what people think.I bet it's extremely disheartening to be a musician in a world where people aren't supportive.
@shatteringglass I think Billy needs someone in his life that can reassure him or something bc he's letting these naysayers get to him.I've heard how he reacts to so-called fans ranting at shows,he needs a dose of confidence. He talks about how it's important to do your own thing, not follow the herd, but if you're going to be affected by those who attack you for it,it's sad to watch. The majority of people have a low IQ.I think that explains the popularity of bad music and lack of support for good
@shatteringglass I've probably just opened the flood gates. But it's a theory I've kicked around about the popularity of mundane repetitive no-soul music + the dismissing of quality music/lyrics + challenging the norm. You get rid of the people who can't grasp the concepts of good music and/or other art, + the remaining people are few.Quality + creativity are always going to be out...people don't support things that are different en masse. I just want to give the band a hug. That sound lame. :P
When I heard this song in Pisces Iscariot, I was amazed. How can a song like this end up on an album full B sides and also-rans? If I remember right, it was the recording quality that kept it off another album.
This one rocks my socks off. I am bare-foot right now.
Damn why doesn't Billy watch this and get real again? His new stuff is sh*t - no heart and no soul. This is straight from the f*ckin heart and straight from the f*ckin soul, like it should be.
@Bogwire have you even listened to the new stuff? or even bothered to see him live recently? oh yeah i forgot... the old light bulb is always better... the new stuff may not be as angsty... but he's over 40 years old now... he's a much different person... billy is still a GREAT performer and an amazing musician and song writer... maybe you should grow up like he has. you're an idiot.
@pugfuglychris Agreed. Where, I didn't care for Zeitgeist as much as anything else they did... the newest stuff? Incredible. Can't wait for the rest of it to be released. :)
@zedrein18 I think he was losing it, so he shaved it off so he didn't like a mouldy turd. You can see it was falling off on that famous 'Rolling Stone' magazine cover
Just shows to prove why SP are one of the best bands of the last 20 odd years. A B-Side that is album worthy and kickass. Jimmy is perfect as per usual...
@Idobeapirate Totally agree. Its amazing some of the songs Billy has left off albums. My personal irk is with Speed Kills, the best song from the Machina era and it wasn't even on Machina. Each to their own, of course, but I think the studio version is a masterpiece. And that's just one. There are dozens of others. This would have stood alongside anything on SD.
@headofwords I'm not the biggest fan of Machina but some of its B-sides do rock. Slow Down is my fave from Machina 2. That said Marquis in Spades and Pennies shudve graced Mellon Collie and, well Starla needs no case to answer for...
Props to the camera guy for being an idiot and zooming in on the wrong guitar player during Billy's solo. Kick ass vid though. Pumpkins are where it's at.
Um, platoslug......nice name by the way......Pisces Iscariot IS an album...last I checked an album of B sides, but an album no less....it's my favorite, althought honestly it was hard to choose cuz the pumpkins are so great absolutely great...I can't say there are too many bands who have albums I can listen to straight through.
just noticed james is wearing a skirt lol 2:53. love these guys to death, it's a shame the original lineup is no more. i agree with 717mienbao, when i saw em in 2007 there wasn't a whole lot of humor in the performance. still, it was a memorable show, and probably the best light show i've ever seen, aside from maybe ladytron.
@eatrocksah its a shame too, at this point in time if you wanted to listen to rock/punk/thrash (what have you) you could, or if you wanted to listen to rap/RnB/Hip-Hop you could.....now-a-days its all pop and rap, wtf happened
the smashing pumpkins are my favorite band and metro (in chicago) is my favorite music venue. what a great rock band...look look billy has long hair!!!
You're absolutely right. However, despite being roughly 60% vocally in tune, he's 100% pure emotionally expressive. He's lost that edge in his vocal performance lately.
i'm sure james can play the leads. i'm sure jimmy could play all the leads on a long enough time line...i am not under rating james as a guitarist. i just think it's funny that the argument is about james being a competent guitarist. he does what he does well. his roll is necessary. however, i have seen/heard "blew away" and " take me down" live....neither time was blown away by james' shredding abilities.
I would agree. I am surprised at how many people can argue that the band is the same or better without James. I don't think people really watched enough live performances to appreciate what James contributes. James is like an allstar lineman protecting an MVP quaterback. Billy was able to shine because of James' contributions. If people could see James play live on the SNL Bullet w/Bfly wings they would understand how sick he is at guitar.
The fact that Billy plays all the leads doesn't mean much. Billy plays all the leads because he hogs them. It doesn't mean that James can't play them, he just doesn't because Billy does. That doesn't make his contributions to the live performances any less important. A lead without a rhythm doesn't work either...
I really think that they no need james or d`arcy, they knows that they were part very important of the band, but now smashing pumpkins takes his one way, like everything in the life, i remember "Muzzle" when billy says: "cause all thing must SURELY have to end, and great loves one day have to part"
@Wii4me I love this song, and I agree that it should've been on SD without question. Sweet Sweet was always one of my least fave Pumpkins tracks, but I realized some charming quality it has that makes it work and fit in with the pace of the album. Just my 2 cents.
oh god...i didn't realize. i wasn't paying that much attention before, i just thought it was a flowered shirt, but its a flowered DRESS!! oh man....still love them tho!
the music is still good but not the same. not sure what it is but they lost something when james and darcy left. the feeling isn't there or something.
That's because James and D'Arcy were just as weird as Billy, but in different ways. Those personalities are gone. I still don't think he should have called his new stuff SP, but I guess it's his name and he can do what he wants with it.
Ginger is a pretty good song writer in her own right. Melinda on keyboard I believe brings a whole new dimension to the band i.e. tonight tonight sounds great even without an orchestra behind them. Definitely not going to be the same SP we're used to but I still like them.
I thought that as well until I heard "As Rome Burns & "Song For A Son". I believe that the Smashing Pumpkins are finally getting back to where they left off. I think that they just needed some time to get back to where they used to be musically. They have other members playing with them now, too, so it takes time to get them adjusted as well. I have a feeling that their next album will be a lot better.
wow, they sure don't have this stuff in America Youtube. That was awesome.
Oh, and by the why. I don't know who was filiming it but he must not have been very smart. I was pumped to see Billy play that solo, but then he just zooms in on Jimmy the whole time.
Some of SP's best work came out through Adore and Machina 1 & 2...it's just a different style, that's why they are who they are, they never repeat themselves.
it kind of seems like when billy shaved his head he also shaved his sanity off. lolol too bad things turned out bad for SP...hopefully billy learned from past mistakes
This is when The Smashing Pumpkins were still a real band and not an ego trip of Billy's. I'm sorry to say that, but it's true. And I met Billy and he seemed really nice. He signed my Mellon Collie LP and shook my hand. Listening to this song brings back 93 for better or worst. I still love this band between 91 and 96 (ok, 97).
you're totally right. the worst thing is that now when you tell someone that SP is you favorite band you have to specify "91-97" cos everyone will think about tarantula. pretty sad.
Your right. I loved the Smashing Pumpkins in the beginning until about 1998 and then kind of lost interest in them even though I've seen them two times and got Billy and the band to sign my Mellon Collie LP in 2000 in Minneapolis. But, at least he went back to the old sound now, but other than name it's not really the SP I remember.
He doesn't have the greatest live singing voice but somehow it works.

the smashing pumpkins are my favorite band and metro (in chicago) is my favorite music venue. what a great rock band...look look billy has long hair!!!
szymonm81 2 years ago
its a hard song to sing and play; with the lights and crowd noise im not surprised he messed up so much
jesusisapokemon 2 years ago
fucking billy sucks at singing his own songs sometimes sorry hahah, he can't keep his voice in key lol
I've been listening to pumpkins since 93 so don't even try lol
spaceorbison 2 years ago
You're absolutely right. However, despite being roughly 60% vocally in tune, he's 100% pure emotionally expressive. He's lost that edge in his vocal performance lately.
ffxiiangel 2 years ago
@ffxiiangel
I sadly agree. I'll always be a pumkins fan but he's a bit stoic in his performances this last tour.
I like the interview I once heard of Thom Yorke who said it was Bjork who influenced him to allow himself to be swept up in the moment of performing.

This video gives me chills. I wish there was a video of them playing "La Dolly Vita" live.

YourEverythingImTold 2 years ago
i'm sure james can play the leads. i'm sure jimmy could play all the leads on a long enough time line...i am not under rating james as a guitarist. i just think it's funny that the argument is about james being a competent guitarist. he does what he does well. his roll is necessary. however, i have seen/heard "blew away" and " take me down" live....neither time was blown away by james' shredding abilities.
infinitycomplex 2 years ago
James Iha is one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
brocasarea1 3 years ago
Corgan is way better than iha, corgan wrote and recorded all the stuff on the albums that iha did live
g1bsonsg338 3 years ago 2
Yer but he was always saying that James came up with great stuff, it just never fit in with their albums
thatissmashing 3 years ago 3
I would agree. I am surprised at how many people can argue that the band is the same or better without James. I don't think people really watched enough live performances to appreciate what James contributes. James is like an allstar lineman protecting an MVP quaterback. Billy was able to shine because of James' contributions. If people could see James play live on the SNL Bullet w/Bfly wings they would understand how sick he is at guitar.
scottfairplace 3 years ago 4
people don't seem to notice that in 98% of these videos that Billy is playing ALL the leads.
infinitycomplex 3 years ago
Seriously. James is so overrated by fans.
arvidownsyou 2 years ago
The fact that Billy plays all the leads doesn't mean much. Billy plays all the leads because he hogs them. It doesn't mean that James can't play them, he just doesn't because Billy does. That doesn't make his contributions to the live performances any less important. A lead without a rhythm doesn't work either...
TheImplodingVoice61 2 years ago
james can't play them. hes even admitted it before

Pisces Iscariot should be an album. It's just stunning.

OF COURSE THAT THE MUSIC ISN`T THE SAME, WHAT YOU EXPECTED IT ALL? that after all these years, should remain the same? something had to change..
infinitycero 3 years ago 2
I really think that they no need james or d`arcy, they knows that they were part very important of the band, but now smashing pumpkins takes his one way, like everything in the life, i remember "Muzzle" when billy says: "cause all thing must SURELY have to end, and great loves one day have to part"
let there be music
infinitycero 3 years ago 4
What's he saying at the end? This extra ending was not on Pisces Iscariot.

Should have replaced Sweet Sweet on Siamese Dream.
Wii4me 3 years ago 18
Definately
pynepyne 3 years ago
I like sweet sweet but I think Siamese Dream would have had a been a much more hardcore album if only it had this song.
Wii4me 3 years ago
@Wii4me I love this song, and I agree that it should've been on SD without question. Sweet Sweet was always one of my least fave Pumpkins tracks, but I realized some charming quality it has that makes it work and fit in with the pace of the album. Just my 2 cents.

the music is still good but not the same. not sure what it is but they lost something when james and darcy left. the feeling isn't there or something.

crk140 3 years ago 3
That's because James and D'Arcy were just as weird as Billy, but in different ways. Those personalities are gone. I still don't think he should have called his new stuff SP, but I guess it's his name and he can do what he wants with it.
fatcatbuzz 3 years ago 4
Ginger is a pretty good song writer in her own right. Melinda on keyboard I believe brings a whole new dimension to the band i.e. tonight tonight sounds great even without an orchestra behind them. Definitely not going to be the same SP we're used to but I still like them.
oledesmaph 3 years ago
I thought that as well until I heard "As Rome Burns & "Song For A Son". I believe that the Smashing Pumpkins are finally getting back to where they left off. I think that they just needed some time to get back to where they used to be musically. They have other members playing with them now, too, so it takes time to get them adjusted as well. I have a feeling that their next album will be a lot better.
Herbalaussie 3 years ago 2
wow, they sure don't have this stuff in America Youtube. That was awesome.
Oh, and by the why. I don't know who was filiming it but he must not have been very smart. I was pumped to see Billy play that solo, but then he just zooms in on Jimmy the whole time.
PumpkinHead8 4 years ago
oops, I thought this was still the UK youtube.
I guess we do have a good youtube in america!
PumpkinHead8 4 years ago
I think the man who filiming it mistunderstand the solo is played by jame iha, so he only zoom in Jame when billy play the solo

Gish, Siamese Dream and Pises Iscarriot are the best albums.
simmyuk 4 years ago
agreed, plus mellon collie
PumpkinDuncan 4 years ago
Some of SP's best work came out through Adore and Machina 1 & 2...it's just a different style, that's why they are who they are, they never repeat themselves.
i2ad10head 4 years ago
That's a fair comment, but I think most fans would agree that siamese dream highlights the height of their creativity.
PumpkinDuncan 4 years ago
yup they dont repeat themselves. it's just a different style and creativity. all in all it's still the pumpkins

I still love this band between 91 and 96 (ok, 97).
fatcatbuzz 4 years ago 2
you're totally right. the worst thing is that now when you tell someone that SP is you favorite band you have to specify "91-97" cos everyone will think about tarantula. pretty sad.
allrain 4 years ago
Your right. I loved the Smashing Pumpkins in the beginning until about 1998 and then kind of lost interest in them even though I've seen them two times and got Billy and the band to sign my Mellon Collie LP in 2000 in Minneapolis. But, at least he went back to the old sound now, but other than name it's not really the SP I remember.

great video. when i found it, i amost fell off the chair. Those are the Pumpkins I knew for the first time in my life. Unforgettable.
