I live in Pensacola, Fla. and my buddy, Craig, would call down from Chicago and tell us what was hot in music. The first Roadmaster album was one of his top picks. Smash and the boys rocked our southern asses off. Needless to say we oicked up the other albums as they came out. I still have them today. I wish they were all on CD. I read where Rock Candy Records in England may release the first one. I'm keeping my eyes out for that. Peace.
I returned from SoCal in 75,..that winter we went fron INDY to Anderson in my 56 Chevy, with NO HEAT, to see "FREE BEER",.."DUTCH WALL",..and "PURE FUNK" at The National Guard Armory,..it was off the hook, got to meet SMASH,
he looked 7 foot tall with his huge Afro, and his high heeled Disco Boots,..LOL
Do you remember the "Funk's Blast" parties in the parking lot behind Funky's Pizza King, 1971, 1972. Pure Funk playing plus other assorted guests. Asher with his huge afro. Good times!
They played at the D Chi house as both Pure Funk and Roadmaster for Little 500 in '76 and '77. I had t-shirts with both names.
the Adam Smasher LOVES US!
We were on 3rd st.and moved up to Jordan- there he was suddenly up on the roof of "The bombshelter" like the Beatles while a couple of bros did a double-inverted moon behind him.
crazy!
Too bad he wanted to switch to WFBQ- I think the wait from WNAP killed his career as a DJ.
Asaher...known him my whole life...are families are both from Greece..and my man could always sing...ELI'S COMIN..oh yeah!!!Pure Funk and Indiana Unicversity..he's always rocked..and we were counslers together at Kiwaca Camp..remember that Ash? TBJBA
Great news for all Roadmaster fans.!!!!!!!!!The Roadmaster Reunion show has been digitally remastered and is available on DVD. Send Toby Myers a Facebook message and he'll hook you up.
This band was first called Pure Funk. Asher Benrubi was lead singer. I also know Micheal Reed very well and would like to talk to him. I played Mike's first Moog . Rob
I'd like to thank who posted these videos, me and my wife have been searching the web for Roadmaster for some time. What an awesome band... I saw them in a concert in Fountain Square, across from Arthur's music store, and I saw them open for Peter Frampton at Market Square... when Smash was a DJ on NAP, (when I was like 13, I'd call the WNAP request line, and Smash would talk to me. Whatever I said, he made it sound like I said something cool) Thanks, Smash...
Smash was a DJ but hands down the best DJ was the BoHoney Buster Bodine IMHO I would also like to thank those posting Roadmaster it brings back memories I just got back to Indy and took my wife ona tour of downtown. LOTS of changes.
Wow! I had forgotten about Roadmaster! They were great! Who could forget Adam Smasher? The coolest DJ spinning the greatest rock songs on WNAP 93.1 "The Wrath of the Buzzard"!Man, those were the days! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Wow..Bin searching for this on MP3 for some time.Have the vinyl but it does'nt get better than seeing these guys 1st hand."Who can sing like fatboy do?"
You shoulda seen Asher back in the day in '76 - Afro, wearing shorts and suspenders, driving a burgundy Austin Marina and rockin the Bluebird with this band. "For your general knowledge", it doesn't ever get better than this. Thanks for posting!

Wow. Whodathunk Asher Benrubi actually had hair? He actually doesn't look much older than his son Abe here.
Now, if we could only get Abe to shave his head more often...
