That is not the only cross in the waters off of Saipan. There are several others. Each time a local diver either gets missing or dies at sea, the family members would either place a cross or anything to mark the spot, if not the exact spot, that the diver was last seen. Saipan consist a majority of the catholic faith hence the cross. There is one cross directly west of Moylans Insurance.
I would say most likely it was place there as memorial, probably within reasonable time after the war. It could been longer but without seeing what it is made of, hard to tell. It looks like stone.
It was not made of metal. It was either stone or possibly concrete. I only saw it on one dive and only touched it once. I thought it was concrete but one of the other divers who had seen it before me said he thought it was stone.
We don't know what it's doing there...who put it there or when. Some people think it's from when the Spanish came here (which would make it more than 100 years old) and some think it's from World War II...some kind of Memorial from the Saipan invasion. Again, nobody knows who put it there, when or why.
jesus died there

Perhaps after the battle on the island was over Americans could have put it in the water as a memorial for all those who died.

I have been in Saipan for three years and never heard of it. I know most of the dive shops here and no one ever mentioned it as a point of interest.
It is still very interesting and I want to check it out one day. Can you give me directions?
There is much to explore in the CNMI
