  • This is MT at his best. I just bought Brussels Affair '73--very good, but this version of Gimme Shelter is far superior. Mick's solo is just brilliant, and you can actually see him. What is with the video back then? Nothing of Keef. Just terrible. Almost not worth watching the crappy, grainy video back then, plus they never focus on the right player at the right time. Here, I am surprised they have so much of MT. He really is stoic. Just stands there, but smokes ass!! Wow!!!

  • Mick Taylor really gave The Stones a harmonic edge!

  • The best years of the Stones. Early 70's was the golden era.

  • "with friends"

    mick jagger is the best...!!!!!

  • Hollywood Alive by Adam Hartmann

  • Pity Mick doesn't sound too great on this recording.. The others sound epic on this version.. I really like the intro and the solo..

  • here again at 1.00 mick goes to sing,... and Keith chucks another one in, !!! ahhhh playing live!!!! only the 'best' can do this....well.

  • Superb live version! Great guitar solo on this!

  • I wouldnt be Keith during 72 - 73 tour ... What he thought of M. Taylor playing ? " Fuck off this guy he is just on another planet than me .. He is just my master " .

  • It's not overplaying, IMHO. Yes, he's fast, but he's playing over the chords just fine. The licks are correct, his timing is precise, his tone is classic. It all fits. It's just… boring, that's all. To me anyway. Nothing surprising, nothing that grabs you… nothing that grabs the audience either. Can you remember a single thing he played?

  • @johnshibley

I can remember EVERY tune Taylor played on with the Stones and I have been playing them every day for almost 45 years! But what I can't remember is anything significant that Wood has ever done with the Stones. Yup Woody with the Faces was certainly a different story but his playing with the Stones is......well what did he play on again?????

  • @cn854 Than you're forgetting Wood's beautiful weaving with Keith on Beast of Burden, pulsey new wave sound on Shattered, pedal steel on Far Away Eyes and She's So Cold, and crunchy riff on Hey Negrita. You either have a bad memory or shitty taste.

  • @steveconn I personally loved his guitar playing to Keith's 'You got the silver' in the Shine a light movie. Keith said it best. He said Mick was a beautiful guitarist, but there was a distinct separation with lead and rhythm guitar during that time. With Ronny, it's a different ball game - the guitars blend together and there is no distinct separation between one person playing lead and another playing rhythm. They are more intertwined as one instrument.

  • @steveconn Keith didn't believe in that separation of lead and rhythm all the time. U either play guitar or U dont. Besides, Ronny is no shlock guitar player. When he first played with the Stones, he picked up flawlessly on so many of their songs by ear - right off the bat. ie - Heartbreaker. Keith and Ronny also did the New Barbarians together, didn't they? I know someone who saw them live and he said they were great. But at the time, Keith didn't want to stray too far into solo projects.

  • @Atrvexo I don't really want to down Ronny because he really is a good guy and a great musician, but he himself said he rather be remembered for his artwork than his guitar playing. Check out his art if you can. He's very good.

  • @Atrvexo Keith has been labeled one of the... and sometimes THE best Rock rhythm guitar player of all time. It would seem to make sense that in the Mick Taylor Years, 2 of the best should concentrate on doing what they do best...ESPECIALLY when your competition was the Beatles and other great artists of the era. Keith's slide guitar work was also excellent in those days. He doesn't do much of that anymore. I'll have to listen to Taylor with the Blues breakers.

  • @Exile0nMainStreet Thanks for the advice, I will check out Ronny's artwork, definitely. Good question! Taylor's chord work is really good actually, he played in a jazz band right after he quit the Stones (he played with Jack Bruce, there are live clips on youtube). In that band he used a lot of inversions of jazz chords and stuff, the music is not very good overall however, Jack Bruce had a period of heavy drug abuse. Still Taylor shows big rhythm guitar jazz skills in that lineup.

  • @Exile0nMainStreet Keith is definitely a rhythm guitar god, a riff machine like no other. Like you say, Taylor/Richards did their best guitar work when they concentrated on what they did best, seperately. Their differences made them great, matching the Beatles and perhaps surpassing them in terms of live performances is a big achievement. As a young guitarist myself for several years I am extremely inspired by the way Taylor played together with Keith, what a combo. You're a wise man btw. :)

  • @Atrvexo How's Taylor's chord work? Any good? I don't know, Will have to check out his other works you listed. Thanks. :-]

  • @steveconn He said everything he wanted to do creatively he could do in the context of the Stones. Even in the New Barbarians, Mick would come out and make appearances with them.

But anyway... Keith wanted Mick Taylor to stay. It was Mick's choice to leave because he said he felt limited and he wanted to do more than he could w/the Stones. Well, we saw how that went. Keith asked him years later: "Why the hell did you leave the Stones, man?"

  • Comment removed

  • @steveconn I would personally love to see Mick &his slinky nerve pushing &pulling leads over a Keith Richards/Ron Wood guitar destruction machine. This upcoming tour may be the Stones final. I'm hoping that Mick Taylor will be asked to play w/them. A dream? maybe. idk. I'd still like to hear it. And Bill Wyman? He was a good Bassist.

Darryl Jones is an accomplished bassist, yes -a former Miles Davis bass player, but Bill had that "sticky fingers" style & touch that was his own.

  • @steveconn Ah well, we'll see what the Stones have planned in their next tour.

It's going to be tough to say goodbye to them once they finally retire as a band.

They've lasted thru 2-3 generations? At least I'll be able to pester Keith more often when he retires. :-) He lives close by me. Don't ask where I live. LOL!

  • @steveconn BTW - Keith has several houses ... so I'm not telling anyone where. I just knows where he hangs out to chill. Guitar in hand, riffs in mind, he can't get away Muhahahahahaha! :-)

  • @steveconn Alright, you're not easily convinced. I believe you have missunderstood Taylor, watch him play Stormy Monday with Albert King for example, beautiful (+his work with The Bluesbreakers, if you have heard of them). He is known for his vibrato, that's a FACT. And the "weaving" concept is bullshit most of the time, I know you'd start praising that. Keith is a fantastic rhythm guitarist, but the lack of a great lead player is obvious. Ronny was great with the Faces, that's it.

  • @Atrvexo Except for the knifing riff on Hey Negrita, the weaving on Beast of Burden, the new wave pulse on Shattered, the pedal steel on Faraway Eyes and She's So Cold, the melody on No Use In Crying, the harpishord on New Faces, and the spidery riff on Moon Is Up, you're right.

  • Taylor just overplayed (how many notes can I fit in here?). Not necessarily the soul of the Stones music.

  • @steveconn Overplayed? Sorry sir but that's such an uneducated opinion. Taylor is known for being minimalistic despite his technique, that's a fact. Fast licks aren't necessarily "overplaying", sometimes their fit perfectly into a song. Listen to a bootleg called "Brussels Affair" from 1973, I respect people who can change their mind and admit when they are wrong. Steve Vai might be rightly accused of overplaying, not Peter Green, Mick Taylor or BB King who express REAL soul.

  • @Atrvexo How is playing as many notes as possible being "minimalistic?" That doesn't even make sense. His Love In Vain solo is minimal, but the general overplaying evidence is all over the place - from the '72 tour to the live Dead Flowers to the upper right of this comment. It doesn't fit the song, it just sounds like a player addicted to busy fretwork.

  • @steveconn Hendrix for example used to play fast licks when it felt right, I guess you think he overplayed alot too? And it doesn't fit the song? Taylor follows the chord changes, he adds vibrato where it's needed, he has a smooth tone etc. He does everything right. He actually started playing with John Mayall when he was 17, of course he's a great guitarist.

  • @Atrvexo Hendrix didn't play every second of a song with endless notes like Taylor, he went more for effect and feel (ex. Bold As Love, Wind Cries Mary). Taylor just mostly sounds like a busybody on the Stones songs, Mick J and Keith trying to create a groove and feel while Taylor furiously masturbates scales, disconnected from the mood. Overplaying like his and Clapton gets boring after awhile, just endless note playing without meaning.

  • Ladies and gentlemen...... The Rolling Stones !!!!!!

  • EPIC !!!!

  • Taylor was the shit .... Stones died when he split .....

  • this recording ft.worth express just might be the stones best work ever live, is there a doubt?

  • @121126 Yes. I agree. It is my favorite Stones tune I have ever "Seen." I have watched it thousands of times trying to figure out MT's solo. I pretty much have it figured out. I'm sure he could do it in his sleep. Watch how Jaggar gets off on MT's solo at around 2:30 or so. He is watching him like a panther, and then dives into his vocals totally inspired. Fuckin brilliant.

  • beautiful nice concert footage and sound. gotta love the stones!

  • Awesome

  • Mick T is a god. He brought out the best out of Keith,

  • Zero dislikes: that's the way it has to be...

  • Except according to Keith in "Life" Mick Taylor never really fit in with the band.

  • best rolling stones era with mick taylor, by far !!!

  • The golden age of the Stones is when Mick Taylor was playing guitar for them. Amazing how his presence made the whole band so much better....his playing took them up another level. Ronnie Wood, on the other hand...sucks and drags them down.

  • i'm 14 and i would rather listen to this than pitbull and kesha. Something's wrong. And not with me.

  • @rebekkawaa Not a DAMN thing wrong with you!!! Just excellent taste in music!

  • I love the stones

  • AMAZING! best fucking band in the fucking WORLD!

  • Texas is a big place. Where in Texas was this?

  • @Amhlair forth worth i believe.

  • @keeffan49 Thanks!

  • Yeah, Mick Taylor was the best thing that ever happened to The Stones. IMHO he was responsible for The Stones' best stuff. The Stones still kick ass but not like they did with Mick Taylor. (Sorry Ron!)

  • damn. Them guitars are slammin'

  • I was there..June 24th, Tarrant County Convention Center, Ft Worth Tx..I was 25 and totally fucking stoned..

  • @tllewski Yeah, I was lucky enough to be there too, both nights. Drove from Louisiana the night B4 tickets went on sale to spend the night in front of the Ft. Worth Convention center ticket window. Got tickets 12th row dead center for the first show! Lower bal. 2nd night. Never will forget it!

  • @tllewski you are a living legend then!!!!! like stones

  • @tllewski Wow. Stoned?

  • @tllewski lsd?, cocaine? haha

  • @tllewski lucky :)

  • Keith is great and MT adds more! love all riffs here ..

  • wow, mic taylor really does it for me on lead guitar. Never heard him cut thru so well B4 than on this version. That les Paul is just kick ass.

  • Damn, Charlie's good t'night!

  • amazing

  • THIS IS SO DAMN TIGHT!!! THEY WERE SO TOGETHER ON THE EXILE TOUR!

  • It is a bit funny.. how their guitars are out of tune.. but still so nice music :)

And Mick T... Thank you my God.

  • It is a bit funny.. how their guitars are out of tune.. but still so nice music :)

  • Listen to that rounded bass sound. Charle and Bill were really the base of that fabulous train.

  • I am in fucking love this is the opening show. Think of a show in the middle of 1972 US tour the epicenter of the band.

  • A lot of the comments by these young people these days show they are off track. The drugs we had in the old days must have been a lot better.

  • 1972...the best RocknRoll album of all time, Exile on Main Street, is released. God damn I wish I was alive in this era. This music is my life.

  • Never quite as good without Brian.......drugs, drugs ........what a waste !!!

  • Whoa. Witness the magnificence of the Stones peaking

  • Could they not feature a black backing singer in Texas at this point? Nice guitar solo permutation on this one...

  • Comment removed

  • @MrJohnTube12: Troll Harder. PS. Fuck you.

  • Mick fucking Taylor

  • the rolling stones forever......

  • The spotlight should be on both Mick Taylor and Keith.

  • they were fantastic..sure they are non longer at their peak but dammit if your peak is this high..can you really be surprised.

  • only thing I can say is why havnt I seen this b4

  • wonder how many cowboy cocks the fag, jagger sucked before and after this concert...lol

  • lisa fisher sounds better the the saxophone!!

  • I love this without back chorus.

  • Imagine being at that concert!!!

  • im sorry im a rolling stones fan but this is a terrible performance

  • @toddyfex I couldn't disagree more. Why?

  • this version is a lot more laided back and focused..

  • @chinahands100

    laided back?

  • @Gigglefuck seems more smooth..rather than frantic on some of these live versions

  • mick taylor is a bad cat

  • Great but...Brian Jones we miss you!

  • When the human race is over and we are being studied by new beings, and they get to music, I would feel very happy to for them to hear Rolling Stones 1968-1972 and get an idea just how badass they were

  • keith is music...taylor ....solo....but keith the best

  • THAT'S WHAT YOU DO..... keep on working...No matter what....1972, and then brilliance and stardom again

  • I typed Pure Rock N Roll and this came on ..

  • Rare video showing MT playing. Too rare !

  • BEST SONG OF ALL TIME ! ! !

  • man, its sad that no artists today are doing what mick and the stones did back then. speaking out about war through music. I'd definately say Iraq and Afghanistan wars were just as bad as Vietnam. The only difference between the two is how our Government learned that they cannot let the media cover too much of war(Vietnam: they showed a lot, Iraq/Afghanistan: they barely even cover the war). what is america coming to...

  • came out in 69 blimey guvnor!!!

  • And Mick Taylor the kid, was only 23 at this time and rocking hard with the big guys...awsome

  • The Greatest Rock n´Roll Band....

  • This is rock n roll. Sounds like a roaring engine with keith the riffmaster and taylor the bluesman!!

  • Wow! Thanks for sharing mate. The Stones.. the greatest! The Stones never die!! I remember loving their music since I was a little kid.. The Rolling Stones; The Greatest Rock n' Roll Band In The World.. not a legend, but a FACT!!!! Long Live The Stones.

  • Bobweiser42

Yes he was and it is such a pity he left the Stones.

The band lost the blues influence after that.

  • In '72 clearly the coolest guys living.

  • I hate to say this cause I've been listening to the Stones since Satisfaction and I had no idea Mick Taylor was this good. Better late than never is all I can say.

  • @bobweiser42 Check out the 1972 (Ladies and Gentlemen) version of Love in Vain on Youtube. Check out the tune Time Waits for No One off of the It's Only Rock n Roll album. Check out Can't you hear me knockin off of Sticky Fingers. Finally check out the tune Spanish off of Mick Taylor's solo album. Mick Taylor was as good a melodic lead guitarist as any in rock history in my humble opinion.

  • ever since taylor left the stones have sucked. they play all their songs too fast and there's no lead guitar . long live micky taylor!

  • taylor solo....keith is music!BUT....GOD IS KEITH......OKAY?

  • taylor solo....keith is music!

  • Love the riff!

  • One of the biggest mysteries of modern mankind- why did Taylor leave the Stones? There was no advantage to anyone. Everybody laments the loss- the stones , the audiences and almost certainly Taylor himself

  • @hoarse01 I heard a series on the radio about the Stones, and they spoke to Mick taylor, he said he left because he got bored with the inactivity, he said that nothing would happen for 4 months or more and he wouldent hear from anyone, then they would get together and work flat out for a month or so and then nothing again, he said that he had been talking to Jack Bruce for a while and decided to do something with him.

  • @deejayzak And now nothing has happened for 37 years.

  • love that this version has sax in it:)

  • Amazing version! Taylor is mind blowing as usual! I'm obsessed with the lick starting at 2:44! I have stole as much as I can from this man!

  • @Atrvexo That lick, like a lot of licks, sounds difficult but is easy to play.

  • @TeenCretin True. Generally, the vibrato and phrasing is what's hard with Taylors playing with the Stones, not the amount of notes or the scales/arpeggios he is using (even if that can be tricky too in faster licks). He was known for his unorthodox selection of notes in some tunes.

  • Dig it when people know their craft....TAYLOR perfected his craft...

  • it sounds like Jagger is saying "Whoa, Jitterbug, it's just a shot away..." sounds like some good misheard lyrics. jaja

  • @telecasterman081095 Or " whoa , jesus .... " :D

  • I remember first sitting watching this in a movie theatre in 1979 and was simply blown away! But I also felt that I was surely cheated seeing the Stones on tour in Mpls the summer the year before....

    MICK TAYLOR WE MISS YOU

  • @flybreath YOU JUST COULD'NT HELP YOURSELF COULD YOU?

  • @flybreath ok, I did'nt see his remark. Don't know where this will go now:(( :((

  • Shoot, wish I could have been there. They were smoking back then!

Techically I could have been be it in diapers.

  • The Mick Taylor era was very special as can be heard here!!!

  • Simply the greatest group ever in their prime...no one will ever match the Stones music, decadence, and longevity.

  • @jbstonesfan QUEEN?

  • @kostyl fuck them!

  • @jbstonesfan Love em myself but want to add Zeppelin too!

  • @jbstonesfan amen

  • Probably the best live version of Gimme Shelter I've heard! I have seen videos of them playing this song in recent years which they were really good, but this has to be the best of them all!

  • Keith is so rocking and Taylor i god. In 72, they sure were the greatest.

  • @grundstr yes unfortunately the time is running away !
