  • this was better than two weeks with my grandmother

  • Emily Post is the go to manners people for the wealthy, so if other people contradict what she says, then i'd side with Emily.

  • If you had seen the first Curb Your enthusiam called the Pants tent. Larry David tells Richard Lewis to watch some "Emily Fucking Post" I always thought that was funny.

  • @SuperKillabeats That is one of my favorite lines form that show! ive just never known of someone who knew of emily post and watch Curb Your Enthusiam

  • Wait, is she saying I'm not supposed eat peas with my knife???

  • @felson99 How do you eat peas without putting the knife to your mouth?

  • did she just put a piece of bread directly on the table?

  • Did she really need to explain what spaghetti is?

  • @imajika2 Maybe it was a rare food in the USA in 1947?

  • I follow the majority of these rules when I eat out or at a family/friend get together; hurray for mom for teaching me!

However, eating at home, forget the rules! /two hands in mashed potatoes.

  • I firmly believe most people today need better table manners. But this is bullshit--just a bunch of random rules.

  • I especially enjoyed the "don'ts" in this one

  • this dinner party sucks! where's the booze?!

  • "every dessert may be eaten with a fork and spoon". Emily never served ice cream as a dessert?

I can't imagine not using a knife on asparagus. It's pretty thick and tough sometimes.

Were the women eating spaghetti eating outdoors? Why else were they wearing coats and scarves?

Did the woman eating soup really put a slice of bread on the table cloth?

  • That chick looks so happy to be there!

  • Glad I don't go to many "formal" dinners; there's too much to learn and I don't want to look like a pig.

I bet when she's not being filmed, Emily chews with her mouth open and shovels food into her mouth by holding her utensils in her fist.

  • @6motion6 - surprisingly, most of this is now not followed, even at formal dinners. Most diners would be shocked to see anyone raising a bowl to their lips (even with handles). The only rules observed now are that you use the utensils from the outside pairs first. However, in China and Japan, you're obliged to finish your rice and broth by lifting the whole bowl in one hand and drinking from it...

  • @Vieweracc99 I was just joking, I know formal dinner procedures have changed. It's really interesting to see this film. The dining customs of other countries are also interesting.

I really enjoyed this helpful film, feel like I should make an effort to follow all of her edicts and host a formal dinner party. Too bad I don't have the right table settings.
