For al those that Kenny G isnt jazz, well, this pretty much will shut you up for a while. Hey, much of what he does isn't jazz, but as many musicians do, he dabbles here and there. I dont see a problem with that. This is just beautiful.

sorry no improv = not jazz, playing the head with some expression is just unacceptable to any jazz piece. The issue with Kenny G is his attitude i guess, i don't think he can't improvise, but he's not even trying to push the boundaries of music, instead he seems very comfortable with selling records by playing not much. Basically my view is that he's not contributing anything to music but making some good biz, so he's a great businessman at best.

i saw a kenny G concert in london last year. the audience absolutely loves him. he enjoys what he does. he has sold more records that most instrumentalists. kenny g does not have to play complex jazz. he has found his market segment...people who just want easy listening and nothing more...

They could have gone pop, but they didnt because they were the ones that reacted against pop jazz which in swing era, better called "Swing Jazz" Many of those artists made money in swing era, but then they went their own ways and started bebop, hard bop, funky jazz...etc. There is no body to blame here. Kenny G realized that he wanted to make money, so he went pop.

Kenny G is underrated because jazz today went academic. In academic universities he is despised. They don't even consider him a jazz player. It is almost a since to equate him with Jazz. .

But I agree he is one of the bets Sax I heard. He knows how to bring out clear "unique" quality sound. Which is, by the way, important to jazz.

From what i read on kenny g, there used to be a lot of argument on his playstyle which didnt please the old school saxx players. Kenny G is doing a lot of 'freestyle' in his compositions, and that pissed off classic jazz players, who didn't recognise his style as a talent but more like a mockery towards what they think is 'real playing'. Of course, now kenny g is well recognised and played really amazing pieces. Kenny G rulez, that's all I can say! :D

I mean generally (as in "not always," but more often than not, even if only slightly - I feel the need to qualify everything I say on YouTube...) his songs are really highly arranged. There's more to them than some chords and a melody line, which is what most old school players tend to work with. The rest of the music tends to be made up in the studio on the spot, which is impossible with synthesized and sequenced instruments. I'm not saying that makes them better, though. That's just the truth.
