is it just me, or did he tune down a whole step? the song was originally recorded in d-minor, but it looked like he was playing in e.... if so, that's rather out of the ordinary for clapton.

Hmm, I don't notice them messing up the lyrics. Are you referring to the last verse after the solo? I guess their overlapping voices could make it sound like they're making mistakes.
