Chris.........what you told proximity is probally 100% correct
Once i installed SuSE Linux on a PC and just for the heck of it i chose English-BRITISH as the language.......What happened was $ was now the Pound sign and ~ and / were reversed.

If you have a different physical layout on your keybard you realy shoudn't pick US :P
I have had this issue a few times after spilling water or soda in my keyboard, beer just kills it right out though.
If this is your problem then disacembel it seporate the 3 layers of film and reasemble it that alwayes does the trick for me and trust me i have spiled alot in to my keyboard.
