  • Went to see where he lived in belsize park

was told the house had been knocked down but the cottage still exists at the back there should be some kind of blue plaque

  • Would love to see the complete documentary.

  • can someone tell me the song at 4.33 secs?? i have downloaded pretty much all nicks rare albums and i cant seem to find it. its so beautiful i have to have it. thanks

  • @hi0u50fd Hanging on a star

  • It's almost as if Nick KNEW that it was approaching. Like he had No Choice in the Matter. He was to die very soon, & this fear stopped him from performing both Guitar & Vocals at the Same time. He knew he didn't have long left...

  • @therealKINDLE Well with deppression you tend to think of death frequently. Most people with deppression both fear they will waste their lives in a horrible state of mind and consider death as a way of escape.

  • I will never be as talented as this man, but I understand exactly how he felt.

  • the age 20 thru 30 yrs could be a harsh time for some, I think was Nick was just too young and impatient

  • the end of this documentary makes me cry like a bitch, i think of him every time i have cornflakes :(

  • 3:24 HOLY FUCKING SHIT am i the only one who notices her pupils are the size of fucking jupiter.

  • @Zamorack13 Its just the outer colour, she must have dark brown eyes.

  • Why would Warner Music Group bother removing pt. 5 of this documentary? Do they really think more people will rush out and buy the "Fruit Tree" box set? Sad, you'd think they have enough money by now...

  • the parallel between nick and syd barret's life and music is incredible! life story not quite as much, but their music is cut from the same cloth

  • @myhighmilo420 I think you make a good point, and I love both artists. There is one glaring difference though, that being that Syd's Pink Floyd was highly successful, even in the early days.

  • what a talented family. i agree with the comment below regarding his mother's poem. her song in a previous part of this docu' sounded amazing aswell.

love nick drake. such a shame he wasn't properly appreciated in his lifetime. his music has been a big inspiration to me and many other musicians, especially from a rural background.

i quite fancy his sister though.

  • (There are a lot of irrelevant comments on this page! Now for a relevant one...)

Just listen to Nick's mum's poem. I think it hints at the sombre state of mind she tended to carry around with her. Nick's sister said that their mother would have found life hard if she hadn't met and married their father. Maybe Nick could have been saved by meeting the right woman. Unfortunately, Molly might have been sombre, but Nick had it a lot worse than that. Poor sod. R.I.P. Nick, we love you now.

  • nice

  • Hahahaah! XD

  • big pharma killed him

  • PEELS!

  • Pretty good documentary, but not as insightful as I had hoped it would be... thanks for putting it up though!! The end (and the rest of it) is available here:

    viddler (dot) com/explore/digizen/videos/13/

  • The power of tv eh - one ad and Nick's stuff goes through the roof. I always knew he'd sell out, the old doomed romantic

  • I actually think that was great, now there are many more people who knew how great and talented he was.

  • don't see why I should approach anyone with caution unless they being aggressive and rude, like your good self. I was just curious as to how you were such an authority on the subject. By the way I'm from Northern Ireland, probably explains why I don't fit your cosy racial stereotype. N Z is made up off many different peoples off the the world, and the Maori & pacific Island peoples. It isn't a country that's easy to generalise about, but then, your probably an authority on that as well.

  • Ah, I remember the first Nick Drake song I ever heard. "Time Of No Reply". I downloaded the song along with others to make a mix CD that was mentioned in the book, "The Perks Of Being A Wallflower". I immediately decided to buy his CDs. Today, I only have his first two releases, and plan to purchase Pink Moon soon.

  • Oh, please don't say that.

  • Uhm... sorry. But it's the truth! Both died the same way :( Heath was a Nick Drake fan and he even made a video for his song "Black Eyed Dog"...

  • No, they didn't die the same way.

Heath died from a COMBINATION of prescription meds, and his system was very run down from battling pneumonia.

Nick died from a toxic level of Elavil in his system:he had simply been prescribed a larger dosage level than his system could handle, which was fairly common back then(especially in the UK, where Elavil was used to treat a wide array of ailments). Nick's overall physical health-unlike Heath's-was pretty good at the time of his death.

  • Depression also hits people harder at different ages.

Those who really have a serious imbalance tend to be more affected at certain ages.Hormones maybe?

    He was so young .

It is possible that his imbalance came to it's pinnacle at that age,For males it is usually earlier .

    Such a tragedy.

  • The truth is Nick's MOTHER also suffered from depression much of her life and Nick was alot like her in many ways.

Nick had suffered from depression and insomnia for most of his life..these ailments were nothing new to him. It got worse after the commercial failure of "Bryter Layter" because he and everyone connected with it had put so much stock in it being THE BIG ONE that was gonna make Nick a star. Nick however refused to tour to promote it, and hated interviews, so promoting it was hard.

  • Why don't you write a book?

  • Back in those days prescription drugs were completely out of balance.

    They were too strong.

You were either comatose or otherwise.

Thank god some sort of balance has been figured out , as far as drugs are concerned.

People on the other hand are ever complicated.

    It's too bad.

  • I think more people and artists especially must be killed by perscription drugs than any other kind, except alchohol.

  • Thanks for uploading this. I initially ran across his 3rd and final release a few years ago, but I just couldn't get into it and let it go Then yesterday, for some reason I couldn't get him out of my head. So I found the documentary you uploaded in order that I can get to know him as an artist. Glad I did. His music is very good. I enjoy it and plan to get the 3 recordings on CD. Thank you again.

  • I don't think he was very depressed for the first album and it's still awesome. I think he just needed some proper anti-depressants and he would have pulled out of the depression and maybe become famous. That does make the story seem less depressing to me anyways. And I don't think it was suicide either, just an overdose.

  • Thanks for putting it up anyway dude

  • Goddamn!! That poem that his mother wrote seems to be directed at me...fucking fantastic...best poem I've EVER heard!

  • Yeah I don't even like poems but I could tell that it was freakin good.

  • I think the world is a hard place for someone so sensitive,if there's a heaven then nicks there playing and singing beautifully, his music is timeless and my world has been made more the richer for it.god bless and see you in heaven.david hoade.

  • @babigurl7 Yes, I think he is a woodland deity who travels on the breeze, charming the herbs, delighting the trees and making the flowers sing with blooms!

  • google video has full thing

  • i couldn't find it.

  • I can't find the exact video source i watched it on but type:

    A Skin too few

into google video search and there is another full length version from viddler. com

  • R.I.P. keith morris, he died in a scuba diving accident

  • You know what? it's profound and beautiful this way

I love the way it ends without part five.

  • What do we want?

    Part five!

    When do we want it?

    NOW!

  • Comment removed

  • no part 5 because Northern Sky is on the end....i think...

  • Seriously? No part five?

  • PART FIVE

  • well said,

robert smith and ian curtis for example

  • I know this sounds like a very romanticized view but I think the deep spirituality of nicks songs came out of his illness. Like alot of artists, that dark side can also be the most intriguing and alive side and it might have been that if Nick didn't have severe depression he might not have made such brilliant songs.

  • I think he would have made brillant songs, maybe just different but equally brillant. Talent thrives in any environment.

  • much better doc than a stranger among us! i heart nick drake

  • Your cock isn't real.

  • Also, you're a cock.

  • And you're an authority on the subject?

  • He was indeed a musical genius, but lets not romanticise his depression. Depression is not romantic to go through. Nick mustve been seriously unwell for him to take his own life, depression is an awful experience and alot of creative people find it difficult to work when they are ill. Peace to all xxx

  • Well said..you are so right. I find this documentary to be truly heartbreaking!!! Very sad to be that down on life! RIP NICK!

  • I learned from this documentairy Nick was greatly inf;uenced by his mother musicallity

  • It makes me so sad. Nick (like Winston Churchill) had a physical illness called clinical depression. Nothing to do with ego or insecurity, and it's that judgmental view that leads so many sufferers of this terrible illness to feel shame and avoid seeking the treatment they need. Thirty years on, maybe Prozac would have saved his life as it saved mine.

  • well put!! bravo

  • I think that sometimes it is better to let it go. Surely he wouldn't have made the music he did if he was on anti depressants. If you get rid of that spark in someones' mind that makes them a genius, you have nothing. Had he taken meds, you probably wouldn't even know him today.

  • listening to nick drake is a realization of 2 extremes. his music is the essence of life. i get this feeling of amazing beauty and human spirit, but at the same time, it makes u feel all that is wrong in the world. sad and happy, simultaneously. there is nothing in this world similar to nick drakes music.

  • His mother was a fantastic poet.. wow.

  • I think he was insecure of himself. That's why he was so depressed.

  • Massive ego?! He was severely depressed you twat. Idiot.

  • 1peoplesun- in reference to you're sniveling remark.

It's sad how people project their own ego crap when they overspeculate on what they don't know.

  • he was amazing i love his music but his ego killed him if you understand what ego is it prevented him from realising his beauty thus killing himself

thats not hard to understand is it ????

  • The ego is what allows you to project such a shallow opinion, without any connection to what really happened. It's not like there's this one thing that is the cause of all the events to unfold, the way they did, and then completely seperate that from what made him a great artist, he was able to give beyond his ego in a time and surroundings, that conflicted.

He struggled for humanity, something you wouldn't understand-but would tarnish.

  • saddest story i've come upon recently even with the vicious competition...not unlike gram parsons or indeed jaco pastorius

  • Ehm, this was a reply to Fjellveisen actually.

  • the poem is marvelous.

  • I wish you were here Nick.

You're an inspiration, and my favorite artist who has ever lived.

    Rest In Peace

  • Nick Drake

    Jaco Pastorius

    Elliott Smith

    Chris Whitley

    Rest In Peace Dear Ones

  • don't forget jeff buckley, him nick drake and elliot smith are my three favorite singer songwriters, RIP

  • ...TIM BUCKLEY!!! He and Nick Drake are the Gods on music... R.I.P.

  • Same.

  • his mums poetry needs publishing

  • a genius!!!!legend!!!!!

  • By chance, I recently discovered Nick's album: Bryter Layter. Being a musician myself and having delt with severe depression, anxiety and insomnia, I can somewhat relate. My heart goes out to his family. Thank You Nick, for writing such beautiful music!

  • have to say to his family well done!!!!!!!

  • In 1970 i was working for a progressive rock station in Miami when the local Island rep dropped off a copy of his 1st LP.I became an immediate fan of Nick's as well as Joe Boyd and his Witchseason production.

Fairport,John and Beverly Martyn and Nick were in heavy rotation. 20 years later(2000)

Joe visited my record shop in Miami for a memorable afternoon.

Thank you for such a moving documentary of Nick's work.Brilliant

  • thank you.

  • Really sorry for his mum to see him already gone, that must be so difficult to deal with those images the rest of her life. They never mention any information on any girlfriends or even bring up the subject except to say no he never let anyone get close enough to him. Can you imagine a guy with all the talent and looks Drake had never even having had at least one girl?great genes, Gabrielle Drake is very attractive as well, i think she's very poised lady.

  • he was actually very popular with 'the ladies' in his younger life.. that said I agree.. to see your own son on film and to hear his music knowing that he is gone must be so hard. if he were your son and he had touched that many people and still touches us today with his music I think that would be great comfort .. a skin too few or not

    :)

  • Well put JoeBurton77.

  • The ladies liked Nick but he wasn't a "ladies man" by any means. He was quite shy and even the aggressive Linda Thompson wasn't able to get to "first base" with him, lol!

  • Did she try? :) I

  • I read somewhere he never consummated a relationship (I'm guessing because of his own personality hurdles)

  • thats his sister, Gabrielle, an actress, his parents went some time ago

  • I find it really spooky. Hearing these people talk they could be referring to Syd Barrett. It sounds like they had very similar breakdown, and similarly they retreated to rural homes and their mothers. Sadly Nick was obviously in a worse state and whether his suicide was an accident or not the future didn't look to bright. Beautiful music and that guitar playing..a true enigma.

  • Nick never really left home, never had alot of friends, didn't enjoy a string of lovers, didn't abuse LSD, etc.

Most of all Nick never made any money from his music;was worried stiff how he was gonna make a living if his music career failed. Syd on the other hand never worried about money, had many friends & lovers, abused many drugs, didn't really suffer from depression or insomnia and had a major health problem with diabetes

by the time he returned home.

  • How did you become such an authority on NIck Drake. You speak as if everything you say is gospel, like you were there, you have facts. Nick Drakes life is still shrouded in mystery, & enigma. That's the conclusion of all these dumb documentaries and pointless interviews. The only person who seemed to know him in any detail was Nick himself...Listen to the music and keep your theorising to yourself! You're coming on like some aficionado and it's tedious. Let his music speak, the rests history...

  • You silly arse. YES, I knew him.

  • How did you know him?

  • i am an amateur film maker and writer and am writing a screen play on the life a times of nick drake.. anyone that can help or contribute would be greatly appreciated.. thank you..

  • A Skin Too Many

  • Damn good poem. Lots of talent in this family.

  • I really like his mother's poem. She was quite talented and creative. Where are her collected works? Also, I don't think this is too moody. I think it fits the subject perfectly.

  • What Keith Morris the photographer say at 01:25? I understand he say that Nick Drake had a dumb apparance but I'm not sure

  • I think he says 'most honest' not 'dumbest'. I think he is referring to nick's obvious depression which was very evident in these photos :)

  • "He had a down appearance" as in depressed, sad.

I believe this is what's said.

  • no he says he had a "down" apperance. though i can understand how his accent could be misconstrued.

  • But turning around within the homely shell Of worry discontent and narrow joy We grow and flourish And rarely see the outside dark that would confound our eyes Some break the shell I think that there are those that push their fingers through the brittle walls And make a hole And through this cruel slit Stare out across the cinders of the world with naked eyes They look both out and in Knowing them selves and too much else beside
  • The Shell

    by Molly Drake

Living grows round us like a skin

To shut away the outer desolation

For if we clearly mark the furthest deep

We should be dead long years before the grave

  • yeah, this documentary is just brilliantly moody. i love the autumnal atmosphere of it all. great stuff

  • Which book would you recommend first? His music takes me back to my days of cold Ohio winters in the 70's living on Campus wondering what my future held. I'm not a huge fan of this music genre but somehow his music got inside me. Like a sad Joni Mitchell song with a extra dose of gloom and longing.

  • This doc is as moody as Nick. Poor guy who created some profound music

  • Yeah he did, but he wasn't THIS moody - they're kinda taking it to the extreme. I like the books better, they're less biased
