Some other examples of BRILLIANT Dusty LIVE performances that were never recorded in a studio for an album:
"Up On The Roof", "People Get Ready", "Get Ready", "El Baion", "Peel Me A Grape", "Natural Woman", "I Don't Want To Go On Without You".
All are available on YouTube for viewing and are 100% BRILLIANT performances that rival any singer of her generation. And actually, her last live performance of "Where Is A Woman To Go?" is a pretty kick-ass performance too!
This song was never on an actual album nor was it ever recorded in a studio, like many of Dusty's songs...and some of her best performances.
abbafan999-I doubt Dusty said that, as the first 10+ years of her career were almost all live performing, from her time touring with The Springfields to her various TV shows, she was constantly singing live.
I believe it was later in her career, that she avoided live performing as much.
Some of her best performances, in my view, were live.
What makes me laugh is that I've read that Dusty has been quoted to had said that she was a perfectionist in the studio because when you make a record it stays for ever so it has to be right whereas if you do a poor live performance you can hope your audience will forget about it and move on. We're all reviewing her live performances these days me included. They are here to stay thanks to you tube. I think she'd be horrified if she knew that would happen!
Sweet Sexy EVER SO TALENTED DUSTY!, Now for some strange reason Dusty did not get in sync w/ the Disco scene, Obviosly a tremendous Singer, and even loved the Black style, which oddly enough Disco was heavily influenced by. But again just not for Dusty. She tried though. The motown era is where she shined
Dusty's attempts at disco were limited (I think only "That's the Kind of Love I've Got For You", "Baby Blue" and "Your Love Still Brings Me to My Knees" were the only real disco songs she recorded)...I think if she had been paired with the right song it would've clicked.
This definitely isnt the right song, but Dusty's always worth watching... :)
Such a pity she had to wait until the end of the sixties right up until the pet shop boys came along to be given some decent material - a waste of talent in my opinion...
I disagree- she recorded some excellent material in the interim (I can think of songs from CAMEO, IT BEGINS AGAIN and WHITE HEAT that hold up very well against her 60's work), but unfortunately they either suffered from lack of promotion (from both the record label and from Dusty) or poor choice of leadoff single.
Now that I have more of her 70s material I agree with all your points, She did do some good material in the 70s. I now have from Dusty with love, see all her faces and cameo which I agree have some excellent tracks and in fact, cameo is turning into my favourite Dusty album as I think the production is great and her singing is some of the best I've heard her do, and like you say, might have suffered from a poor lead of single, lack of promotion and perhaps a dip in her general popularity.
I do think that it begins again and living without your love were not so good though, so perhaps I should rephrase my comments and site the late seventies as her down period, as for white heat; I've not heard it as it seems to be unavailable at the moment. I'd love a copy of cameo remastered onto cd too as I can only get it on mp3 download...
okay, i can understand that- there's a distinct line between CAMEO and her later work. I was shocked by how good CAMEO really is, it's so undervalued.
WHITE HEAT is her most unusual album, and honestly, one of her best. You can usually find the CD on eBay for around $10.
CAMEO's much harder to come by. Either as a single CD or on the collection BEAUTIFUL SOUL (which adds her unreleased work from the aborted LONGING album), it's rare I see it for under $100...
Such a pity she had to wait all that time between the end of the sixties until when the pet shop boys came along to be given some decent material - a waste of talent in my opinion up until that point...
Thanks for the advice. I love Cameo as well and feel it was a major find to add to my Dusty collection. I will seek that one out. I think it's fair to say that as she got older though, her voice deepened, as is quite natural for a woman in her 50s so that on the reputation album her vocals aren't as great and sound hoarser and lower. I think she hit her vocal peak on cameo. What do you think?
I agree, at times on Reputation I think she sounds like her 60s self and for 50 it's understandable that she wasn't doing those silky high notes as much as she did in the early 70s.
Dusty was hot & rocking in this period & released the "White Heat" masterpiece and came to US at The Greek Theatre & gave a totally incredible performance...love and miss Dusty!!!
after seeing this again...Dusty i dont think is comfortable with her outfit and the spandex...she seems nervous and self concious ...but i could be wrong
It wasn't until 6 years later that Dusty made her spectacular comeback with The Pet Shop Boys; "What Have I Done To Deserve This", "Nothing Can Be Proved", "In Private", and "Reputation" all being hits.
I saw her also at the Greek in 82 as you said she was fantastic.Me and my sister saw her twice at the Greek could'nt get enough of such a talented and soulful singer..
Dusty is thrilling to watch here and reminds me of when this legend appeared in 82 at LA's Greek Theater and I was up close and have never forgotten the brilliance of her magical performance...it was surreal watching her! Bravo Dusty and you are missed...White Heat came out around the time of this clip and Dusty rocks out with the best of them but this song was not released to my knowledge.
wow, I love Dusty and everything the gal did, but what is the story with that outfit?! Yowza, not her best, but then again it was the 80's, what can I say. Did she also seem perhaps a bit, well, buzzed in this one? I know this wasn't her best years at that point.
I worship Dusty, but this must be from Dusty's scare, trying to fit into the times, bad mid-late '70s period. Certainly her threads are. It looks like she got them at the Stevie Nicks/Pat Benetar garage sale.
Hello, I do have all of her later albums and singles and it isn't on any of those unless it was released in a country other than the US or UK. Thank you for your reply.
killed it.

I don't know what happened to her taste in material after the early seventies, but she does look like she's having fun here.

she was definitely more hoarse and the vocals lower by the time she did REPUTATION, but the voice is still there and unmistakeable.
There are moments on "Send it to Me", "Daydreaming", "Nothing Has Been Proved" and the title track where she does sound like her old self.
Dusty was 50 though, and turbulent life she had led had undoubtedly affected her voice...
