Well no shit it sounds different. I hear pure performance. It has bigger cams, letting more air in and more exhaust gasses out of the engine more efficiently and a free flowing exhaust to do so even faster. I love that sound

Um dont listen to (TheSkylineShopVancou) that thinks this is the 4.0 v8 GTR. It is the I6. The most likely reason it sounds like that is because in racing, you take off the variable valve timing, so this car may have sport/race cams...The 4.0 v8 in the e46 GTR was developed from the bmw guys that built the F1 engines. Their car wasn't legal in the series, thought it passed the rule book. Hence why the raced for a short while. Thats why I cant wait for the new m3 v8 GTR.

When you turn a car on and the engine is just running (no acceleration) its idling. Ususally like 1000RPM around there, just the engine running very lightly.

I don't think he was asking what it means for an engine to idle, but rather what that particular car's idle means. In this case since it's a race car and it's idle fluctuates and sounds like a chainsaw, it has extremely high lift cams with major overlap between the intake and exhaust to aid volumetric efficiency at higher piston speeds (directly related to higher revolutions). However, at idle it runs poorly because there is too much time available for the intake charge to go out the exhaust.
