Mark close when he is thinking is because earlier in the movie they recorded a song, and the studio stold it from them, and it was "jesse's girl" thats when he realized it was his music.
Can't seem to decide whether I really like this film or whether it is just that I want to fuck the shit out of Heather Graham's character (Rollergirl).
@la9li roller girl is a worthless piece of shit, way better than that turd out there, when i watch this, its if i wanna smoke crack again, fuck roller turd, girls butt fuck ugly. so go stick your finger up your ass. : D
the first time i saw this movie i had a terrible fever, when i saw this part it was weird, the music in the background, the explosions, the guys being high, all together was fucked up,i saw it last nite on dvd and i have the flu, imagine how it felt again
I love when Wahlberg is just, thinking. Brilliant closeup that lasts a minute or two. This movie really made me respect him as an actor. ALL AROUND CLASSIC SCENE!!!
I think it is supposed to be 1983. I remember one of the scenes before this, that year flashes on the screen. If it were still the 70's there would be more colors like orange, yellow and sky-blue. The 80's was so bland color-wise. White, grey, pink and black, especially in rich houses like that. Also "Sister Christian", "99 Luft Balloons" and "Jessie's Girl" would NOT be playing on a mix tape if it were the 70's.
Wow, 2:17, 5 grand for half a key of yay? Thats bullshit that would be the worst blow ever the cheapest blow you can get is 12 grand for a key and thats the shitty stuff. Around where i live it would cost 20 grand per key so you would be paying 10 grand for half a key.
"I wanna know whats in the safe, I wanna know whats in the Goddamn safe in the Godamn master bedroom, in the fuckin floor in the Goddamn fuckin floorsafe thats all!"
this is such a great scene. From 'sister christian' playing in the background, to the bangs adding to the tension and making everyone more on edge, it's just fucking great. Thomas Jane and Alfred Molina are also criminally underrated.
This scene is so fucking brilliant. Despite the fact his accent slips several times, Alfred Molina is incredible. If William Hurt can get Oscar nomination for 10 minutes of screentime, then so should Molina...
LOVE the way Molina delivers that line. "Ah not yet"...combined with the look on his face, its almost like he's implying he's going to kill someone. Or himself. He was so fucking zooted you didn't know what was going to happen. Fantastic acting in this entire scene by everyone involved.
Thomas Jane does so many subtle things in this scene perfectly, like the way he does that quick breathing at 0:45 and try's to act cool by slapping the guy's hand but you can tell he is actually nervous.
Must agree,, Alfed Molina really makes this scene,, what a character. But the whole bled of the music, lighting atmosphere and crazy chinese with the fire crackers just blends together so well. This really is genius.
@getula4003 PTA actually does that surprisingly frequently, putting accidental goofs into the actual movie. Such as when Little Bill says his wife has an "ass in her cock" was actually a word slip by William H. Macy. Also, PTA didn't mean to spell Rodriguez incorrectly but he thought it was funny so he kept it.
guy had 5grand in his hand and decided to go crazy instead of politely leaving. but in reality he would of been killed next day if burning someone that bad.
Mirad el minuto 2.30 cuando el bigotes se empieza a reir sólo pensando en el palo que le va a dar a Rahad y cómo los otros le miran horrorizados porque desde ese momento saben que todo va a ir mal
Great scene, great movie-the glances given by the actors as in this scene and especially when Mark met John at the pool party were spot on. Highly overlooked 90's film-the rise and fall of a porn star.
I recommend the "deep throat" documentary that follows the lives of Harry Reems and Linda Lovelace-and where they ended up. It is a great view along with Boogie Nights.
Best scene in the movie, They were all super nervous because they were ripping him off and whenever a firecracker went off they were expecting somebody was shooting at them. I honestly couldnt stop laughing.
On first viewing, I was jumping on my seat every time the firecrackers went off! It was like I was right there with them.. That's how amazing this scene is!
35mm is a very expensive film stock, you dont just press record between takes, it keeps rolling, so it is most likely Mr. Wahlberg is taking direction (6:30s to 7:14s) from Mr P.T.A. between takes while the D.o.P. keeps shooting. This 'elemental' acting comes to a close when he gets up (obviously two different cuts spliced together). Its a good performance in the whole film, but every now and then directors/editors notice something in the rushes that can be used to fix a gap in the film.
@sparkyinbath Absolutely. There's something about tension on film that just makes you smile. But it's a combination of things in this scene that make it work so well. Number one, the absolute goofiness of Molina's character (My awesome mix tape!). It's his potential menace underneath an overly cheerful demeanor. He's the guy is dangerous, yet he is cheerful and happy while the robbers are amateurs who are gravely serious and scared. And then Rick Springfield starts playing!!!
This is One of the greatest, if the THE greatest, scene in cinema history. It was so well done, well created and masterfully constructed by the genius Paul Thomas Anderson.
I think Todd had "been" with this guy before, probably just for the dope or to score a little cash, and he was never planning to leave that house with any measley 5 grand. That's why he knew where the dude his his money, and why he looked so disgusted when he said "under the bed..." He meant to kill this guy as payback and get outta there with all the dope and cash he could lay hands on. "Dirk" and "Chest" should've split right after they saw the gun Todd had. Too dumb I guess. Great scene.
@cinemapsycho91 - Marky Mark was having thoughts about his life and how he's fallen, even below where he started at giving handjobs for $10. He becomes aware of how messed up things have gotten and just decides that he wants to go back to how things were before, when things were good.
@Mowglieboy69 Maybe you're right. I was going off what I recall when Burt Reynolds goes to see him at the club earlier in the movie. Being that I haven't seen this from the beginning in a little while, I'm bound to take what you say over what I remember.
@cinemapsycho91@Huxley is wrong actually lol, the real reason behind Marks freeze up at 6:30 was because of the stress from filming all day so he had been hyperventilating. In the scene if you notice John Reily looking at him oddly back and forth was him trying to nudge him to snap out of it. Thats when he gets up and continues with the usual scripted part. The director Paul Anderson loved it so much he decided to use it.
@cinemapsycho91 That's exactly what's happening. Diggler had a friend earlier in the movie named Jessie, and he was always distraught over not being able to get the foxy lady he'd landed himself. So it all kind of comes to fruition when he hears the song being played in that situation. He just wishes he could've had JESSIE'S GIIIIIIIRRRL! You're right on target.
@cinemapsycho91- I heard that Mark Wahlberg was really tired when he filmed this scene, and spaced out at that moment, which is why he's staring at nothing for so long. The camera happened to be rolling and P.T. Anderson just kept it in the movie.
from 6:26 - 7:17, this was totally off the script.....UNPLANNED. Wahlberg was so sick and tired of shooting this scene over and over again, which is what lead to his cheeky smile / stare during this time........The producers / directors just roled with it as they saw the magic in it. Fucking beautiful man!!! Best scene in the movie. Maybe the best scene in movie history!
I can't recall if this happens in the movie -- i think its cut, or they never filmed it -- but in the shooting script, Farad is so high that he hears police sirens, and sees the lights -- and doesn't give a shit. He wants to die, and he's "ready for them"...and the implication is that he goes down in a haze of gunfire. (Considering the shots fired, openly, this would likely be the real-world outcome). Also, guardian angels were at work -- the Black dude had those guys point blank.
@cbradley1391 This scene is inspired by a True event that happenned to John Holmes(Who Eddie adams is based on). The character of RAHAD is obviously inspired by a character from the french movie "LA HAINE"(Watch it, is good) Chinese kid throwing firecrackers is inspired by a movie called "Putney swope"(Directed by Robert Downey SR.), it also feels a bit Tarantino-esque(The music and the dialogue) and even a Little bit of young Brian De palma in there! #Im-a-movie-geek and so is PT Anderson :D
@RockingOutLoud4Ever1 haha, lol........you have no idea how hard i laughed when i just read your message. i was taking a drink and spit it out while i couldn't control my laugh. i knew my message would get a good rise, but not that much, lol...........take it easy, mate! lastly, just tell me the truth here........did you vote for obama? i have to know. please be honest.
@RockingOutLoud4Ever1 Huxley's being too nice. I have a better idea: Why don't you go down to the local walmart or other video store, and buy the movie yourself you lazy, "i want others to whipe my ass", "i'm entitled to have others do things for me", "i don't want to do it myself, but my neighbor should do it for me" son fo a bitch!!! i bet you voted for obama, hoping that he would make your life better by arranging some free handouts that you feel you're entitled to? do it yourself, prick.
There are so many great parts from this scene. "Ricky Springfield, He's a buddy of mine!!"....... "No thank youuuuu".......... "No sir, we don't dare you"......... "The motor innnnnnn, fuckin love that song".........LOL, classic. Thank you for posting this. Brings back so many memories of better times, or maybe worse times now that I really think about it. I was in situations like this far to many times in my younger days.
I love how this is so fucking tense yet so hilarious! The PTA signature "extrememly loud music" trademark and Cosmo firing off those firecrackers, especially during the parts with the gun! lmfao...but best of all is the scene-stealing Alfred Molina who never disappoints, especially in this and Magnolia!
Dirk Diggler ftw!

@occlusian that was an idea the director had to continue on with the scene but he scraped it

lol never realized that one scene from the boondocks was inspired by this.
cbradley1391 10 months ago
@cbradley1391 But at the same time, this is "mildly" inspired by fact so it's just a vicious circle of art ripping itself off over and over. =)
Huxley45 10 months ago
@cbradley1391 This scene is inspired by a True event that happenned to John Holmes(Who Eddie adams is based on). The character of RAHAD is obviously inspired by a character from the french movie "LA HAINE"(Watch it, is good) Chinese kid throwing firecrackers is inspired by a movie called "Putney swope"(Directed by Robert Downey SR.), it also feels a bit Tarantino-esque(The music and the dialogue) and even a Little bit of young Brian De palma in there! #Im-a-movie-geek and so is PT Anderson :D

The PTA signature "extrememly loud music" trademark and Cosmo firing off those firecrackers, especially during the parts with the gun! lmfao...but best of all is the scene-stealing Alfred Molina who never disappoints, especially in this and Magnolia!
serenitymorris1 11 months ago 6
@serenitymorris1 Plus, the whole time, they're all worried and trying to convince Todd not to pull something...edge of the seat, baby!

@RockingOutLoud4Ever1
Yes, I can. But, no, I'm not going to.
The reason is the amount of licensed songs if this movie is incredible. The odds that the clips get pulled for that reason are too much.
