What kind of fish is the medium sized Orange one with the light blue cheeks and top of fins. I think I have the same one but when I got it, they didn't have a name on the tank. I thought it might be a dragons blood peacock but I could be wrong. Check out my 52 gallon aquarium videos if u get a chance. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Funny how everybody knows everything about nothing really. Your tanks are nice, and its good how you handle some of the dumb stuff people try and tell you. Africans are a hastle, ive had a malawi tank for about a year in a half and had plenty of truoble and fun... My questions are why not try a livingstonii and have you ever kept a compressiceps?
You've got what i am building right now. I have a 125 with peacocks and haps. Everything is well now, but I know things will change as they get older. Any advise you could give me?
Overcrowded: Yes, that's what you want with African Cichlid. The more fish you have the less the agression. Too many fish to pick fights with, it's spread around.
Plants? First: The only natural plants in lake malawi is Vals. Second, most plants would die in the high PH/hard water, and third, these fish a- dig(uprooting plants) and b- EAT plants.
How many? It really depends. There is a balance that just feels right, or so I've found. I usually have between 20 and 30 fish in my 180, not counting the catfish or mbuna that I've had here and there. There really isn't a right answer.
I think you've inspired me to make a video this weekend.
do u think a 65 gallon long which is 4 and a half feet would be able to fit 6 large HAPS.... like livingstonii??? sorry for the spelling the names kill me lol
do you have lowered aggression with the large amount of adult fish in that size tank? i had a 55g with about 6 adult males and a few yellow labs and it got to be a problem with all of them not just one picking on the others. i want to do a all male 125g or larger. i'm thinking at least a 6' long footprint will help.
Actually, the tank doesn't have much agression. I added a big Champ a while back and all that changed. I had to remove him. Fish have different personalities, and the large tank does help. These fish would not survive in a 55g. They're too large.
I actually got out of the big preditors. Too much work. Anytimes you shuffle around the tank all hell breaks loose. I kept taking the most agressive guys out for a week, adding them back in later to keep from from being top dog and chasing everyone. I've found that it's a lot less hassle to avoid certain fish, like Champs and Venustus to name two. Love the look, but a pain.
Probably.. I tried to keep some in a 55g but over time, even with frequent water changes, they just became unhealthy.
It can be done but you have to know what fish work. You also have to be able to judge your fish when you pick them. You dont want to hyperagressive fish and you're more interested in potential than necessarily the largest or most colorful in the tank. Get a bunch of mid agression guys with good fin markings and color potential and you keep some in a 55.
Somewhere around 30 if you don't count the catfish.. I think. I've changed the tank since this was taken... but it should be nicer as a result.. eventually.
Mostly NLS (New Life Spectrum). I've tried verious dainichi, but NLS is almost as good, comes in one 'flavor' and is just easier with multiple tanks. I also feed HBH Soft Sprilulina and Krill pellets on occasion.

The tank looks a bit over crowed and could use some plants. At least the water looks clean.

I wouldn't do livingstoni. You could do 8-10 peacoks, or 6 peacocks and 4-6 mid sized haps.

Thanks ive tried NLS but i find the pellets to small for some of my larger malawi's. I use Hikari Cichlid Excel and Sera Graungreen.
Great tank have alook at mine when you get chance.

NLS comes in three sizes. Regular, Large fish, and REALLY large fish. Check online for large fish or jumbo fish formula.
