The problem is, Crosby was made the 'face of the league' before he ever stepped foot onto NHL ice, and so now he's protected like he's some sort of Golden Boy.
The reason why alot of people respect Ovechkin and don't respect Crosby is simply because while they are both VERY talented players - Ovechkin plays the game like a man, while Crosby runs around taking cheap shots and then looks to the referees to protect him. People respect Ovi because he snipes from all areas of the ice (not just inches in front of the crease, which is what Crosby does), celebrates hard, hits like a freight train on crack, and elevates the play of everyone around him with his insane passion for the game. Nobody has as much fun playing hockey as Ovechkin does, and it's great. The problem is, Crosby was made the 'face of the league' before he ever stepped foot onto NHL ice, and so now he's protected like he's some sort of Golden Boy.

The reason why alot of people respect Ovechkin and don't respect Crosby is simply because while they are both VERY talented players - Ovechkin plays the game like a man, while Crosby runs around taking cheap shots and then looks to the referees to protect him. Pavel doesn't expect to be fed the puck to score, is just as good at defense as he is scoring and is willing to sacrifice scoring for it, doesn't need the favoritism of the refs or Bettman, doesn't want to be the marketing face of the NHL, and doesn't cry.
