I just completed the game (which generally is awesome except for the comparatively bad controls) for the first time (though not a legitimate run) and yes I know this is NES, but compared to SNES endings of game like SMW or the Donkey Kong Country series... this is a really shitty boss battle and ending sequence! hell even beating SMB 1 was way more fun!

great game for its time, but really lacking that final moment of awesomeness in the end that many SNES games had

I got the game as a rent on my birthday at 1989 ... and later it was my christmas present from same year ... for me that was an excellent excellent adventure, i remember have finished it and got a little bit sad cause it was over, I remember the first time that I saw Mario's flying was so magical!!! Also I collected the Mc Donald's Toys, this game is so huge for me, so magical, and its ending music is so beautiful but at same time a bit sad cause it set the ending of the game and childhood forme

This is by far my favorite game of all time!!! This is also one of the few NES game endings that I was satified with. It made up for the sorry Super Mario Bros. 2 (us version)ending.

I also video taped the ending to this. I used a different strategy, but I got the same results as you, still racoon Mario and Bowser is dead (well, not really. He'd be back in Super Mario World and future Mario games). Not used to the US names of the worlds, because I have the Famicom and the Famicom version.

Actually, it is closer to 19 years ago, which was 1988 (unless you mean the NES version, not the Famicom version, then it is closer to 17 to 18 years, in 1990).
