If you are stealing just parts, a small selection of Allen Keys like 3 or 4 is all you need. You Yanks call it a Hex Set. With just one certain allen key (5mm I think) you could remove v-brakes and disc brakes including the brake/shift levers, and the rear mech... with the others you could take the seat and its post, take both wheels if they are quick release... you have half the cost of a bike right there. The only thing you couldn't take is the frame because its U-locked to something.
GOOD post, I thought as soon as I saw the Sheldon method that so many people rave about, "What a load of crap, you could chop through a wheel in no time!"
The parts of a midrange bike will sell for hundreds even if the thief damages the frame he won't much care.
The Sheldon method is not secure. People must lock through a frame as well.
Every locking method can be defeated. A larger U-lock that goes through the frame and the wheel increases the likelihood of a thief fitting a bottle jack into the lock and prying it open. Sheldon's method minimizes this risk.
Which is more likely? A thief with a hacksaw who doesn't care about riding off with your bike? Or a thief with a bottle jack who expects to ride away with his prize? The answer is that it doesn't matter — you can't stop a determined thief with the right tools.
if it is a good road bike, STI shifter alone will fetch $100 for 105 on craigslist. plenty of drugs with those alone. and then you have the r/d, front wheel, forks, especially if they are carbon etc
@saltinemadness Yes please...I lock Sheldon style because Kryptonite mini U locks can't go through both the wheel and rim, and my rear wheel is worth more than my frame anyway.
@munkydoggy But in this case you can still lose the frame and practically ALSO your wheel (if the thief saws it). Is your rear wheel worth much even if it is destroyed?
I have a lowrider and a pretty unique one at that, so yea, this would suck even if the guy has to buy a new rear wheel still means Im out of a one of a kind bike.
And of he went...to sell that completely knackered bike for scrap metal, after being seen and heard by numerous witnesses...who were chasing him down the street.
this would not be done 90% of the time if its a nice bike the rim is worth alot of money they would not want to ruin the rim not to mention i would like to see you do the to a good trippel wall rim it would take at lest a h1/2 hour

I thief WOULD ride a stolen bike. How else would they be able to make a quick getaway? Unless they pull up in a vehicle and toss the bike in a van or SUV. I can see this scenario that's depicted on this video occurring in the real world. A bike parked in an industrial or fabrication area of town, or even at or near a construction site, where tools of such are readily available, and places to ditch the bike can easily be found. WHERE one leaves their bike must ALWAYS be considered. :-l
I never understood his advocating this method, even if you were to only lock one thing, why not the frame, or at least the wheel and one stay? If you are going to use this method, you might as well not use a heavy u-lock at all. A super fine toothed hacksaw blade will have no problem cutting through tire, tube, rim, etc. Only a really coarse blade would give you trouble.
Sheldon acknowledges possible shortcomings, but continues to defend the method, "Some will object that felons might cut the rear rim and tire to remove the lock. Believe me, this just doesn't happen in the real world. First, this would be a lot of work to steal a frame without a useable rear wheel, the most expensive part of a bike, after the frame."
okay he also stated that in case you cut the rear wheel, what will you do with that bicycle? what's the point of stealing a bicycle in the first place if you don't plan to ride it? don't tell me someone would steal a bike in a destructive fashion to get spare parts ...
@seasonedtoker True, but I think it can go either way. Consider it's a low end beater bike, a thief is definitely not going through all that trouble just for spare part's nor selling to it a delivery man. Say it was a $1000+ cannondale and if a thief has a good eye he can take destroy the rear wheel and take these "spare part's" that actually worth selling. I doubt they would ride a stolen bike anyway, it will increase the chance for them to get caught.
Well I guess that is strike three against the fabled "lock it thru the triangle" legend. Though most of Sheldon's other advice is mighty fine. May he RIP.
@4bikeregistry I think I missed strikes one and two... what were they again?
Cutting through the rear wheel is the only way I know of to defeat the Sheldon locking method (beyond destroying the lock, which is the same with all locking methods).
@moredots Was using "strike three" in the vernacular. Agree the only way to defeat the Sheldon rear wheel locking method is to cut the wheel or destroy the lock.
Always thought this was dodgy. Great video.

Presto. One Murray frame, bent at the seat tube, and likely twisted at the seat stays.

One thing— could you make another video, only this time, attempting to hack saw through a deep V rim? I want to see how much longer it will take you.

well, if you don't lock the frame to the post, then this can happen.
Always - lock goes around frame, through wheel and around the fixed object.
If he saws your wheel, all he gets is a useless fucked up wheel - completely pointless for the thief.
And if he hacksaws through your frame - that's a useless bike, and he still has to get the lock off the wheel, ruining that as well.
Make sure what you lock it to can't be easily cut through.

'what will you do with that bicycle?'
Isn't it obvious?
The thief steals a rear wheel from another bicycle - you know one that is 'secured' with a Q/R hub.

It's not unheard of for a bike to be stolen and sold as scrap metal. Much easier than trying to sell it.
