If you studied the history of the constitution, you would know that it also is called a "living constitution", meaning it adapts to the times, without establishing right and wrong. As for me, good are the principles by which they founded their Republic. Good are the series of checks and balances they wrote into the Constitution. Good was the intention behind all they did to create a free standing Replublic. Writing into the Constitution expressly what NOT to do could be dangerous. Obviously we knew treating blacks as property was wrong or else we wouldn't of had that little conflict called the Civil War. The only reason why we had slavery in the first place was becuase there was not enough people to successfully harvest in the South, so we forced the blacks to. The problem with that argument is that no one can define 'good.' They came up with the best ideas they could. They acknowledged some vagueness because they believed that interpretation was best left up to the people in a distant time. In a way, they gave us 'enough rope' which I believe is fair enough and all you can ask of a free document. The best way to ensure that something doesn't happen in the future is to try and force it to happen.

Defining good can differ among all us conservatives. You haven't defined 'good' either. I'm not speaking from a relativist viewpoint. For example, in their day, they needed slavery and probably thought it was good. Not long after the Republic was formed, it was redefined as bad. No parent throws their kid out on the street, but a good parent doesn't hover over them correcting every mistake. At some point, they let them make mistakes so that they can learn and be better for the experience.

For example, in ancient civilizations, a country would conquer another country and then the citizens of that country would be slaves to the victorious ones. These slaves were not maltreated in any sense, they were more like nanny's/butlers/housekeepers, no harm was done to them. They were treated like humans.
