I first have to preface my statement by saying that I am a middle aged white male and I do not spend much time thinking about racism or racial issues. At first glance, my first impression of this cartoon was that this was a not so subtle racist statement. It also seems a veiled threat against our president. I have no idea what the connecticut reference is so I missed that point.
Now I have no idea what the cartoonist intended and I cannot say what the editor was thinking. I do find if difficult to believe that neither one recognized that this cartoon could be interpreted as racist. There is an old saying in the media "perception is more important that the truth" I think this applies here. Regardless of what was intended, they had to know or should have known that this would have been perceived by some as racist. In any event it is in poor taste.
I think the Vogue cover, while it certainly could be viewed as offensive to some, I believe is not nearly as pernicious. I was at the post office today. They had a poster of obama looking like Hitler. Hitler was a demonic being who was responsible for killing 50 million women man and children. I was very much offended that they compare him to Adolf Hilter and if i was Jewish I would be horrified that they use this crazy man to get there point across. There reason was because of the health plan. I asked the women what does Hilter and Nazis have to do with Obamas Health Plan. She had nothing to say.

The post was making a point about how poorly written the stimulus bill is by showing that it was a chimp who wrote it. The chimp is part of the satirization of the bill, but moreover the fact that it was shot because it wrote it so poorly. It wasn't intended as racist (but could easily be misconstrued), but because Obama is half black and many blacks cling to their history, there will never be any getting around the fact that many blacks will perceive it as racist...even if it's not the truth.

I first have to preface my statement by saying that I am a middle aged white male and I do not spend much time thinking about racism or racial issues. At first glance, my first impression of this cartoon was that this was a not so subtle racist statement. It also seems a veiled threat against our president. I have no idea what the connecticut reference is so I missed that point.

Now I have no idea what the cartoonist intended and I cannot say what the editor was thinking. I do find if difficult to believe that neither one recognized that this cartoon could be interpreted as racist. There is an old saying in the media "perception is more important that the truth" I think this applies here. Regardless of what was intended, they had to know or should have known that this would have been perceived by some as racist. In any event it is in poor taste.

I think the Vogue cover, while it certainly could be viewed as offensive to some, I believe is not nearly as pernicious. I have not seen it before as I do not read Vogue and without you pointing it out to me I don't think I would have recognized the King Kong reference. I think my first impression of the cover would have been "you lucky S.O.B." Well...the connection according to the Post was that opponents of the Stimulus plan should shoot it down in the same way that the chimpanzee had to be killed in Connecticut. But if that were true, the caption sure defies that notion because it says, "They'll have to find somebody else...", referring to the dead animal. The post was making a point about how poorly written the stimulus bill is by showing that it was a chimp who wrote it. The chimp is part of the satirization of the bill, but moreover the fact that it was shot because it wrote it so poorly. It wasn't intended as racist (but could easily be misconstrued), but because Obama is half black and many blacks cling to their history, there will never be any getting around the fact that many blacks will perceive it as racist...even if it's not the truth.

Murdoch does precisely the same thing with 'The Sun' in the UK. It overtly advances an anti-immigration agenda and uses the now widespread tactic of advancing racism under the banner of freedom of speech.

Thanks. Sean Hannity does the same thing on his radio show. He allows his listeners to call in and spew the racist hatred. He lets them spew as much hatred as they want because he says that he believes in "freedom of speech", yet he hangs up on liberal callers who respectfully disagree with him.
