I don't think there is any slack in the reins. They are tied to the saddle, the bend in the reins is a bit of an illusion due to the curb bit. The reins at one point dig into the neck! He is well trained and doing some very complicated movements but I disagree that he is relaxed, alot of his moves are abrupt and almost panic-ie. I agree with Katphoti - it's normal for certain cultures to train with such methods and to have them over flexed.
Beautiful, talented, precise and athletic. It took a lot of training, talent and skill to get the horse to work and react like this and a frame like this may be the only way it works for this horse.
What I really want to know too, is what is that music? It is gorgeous.
@kangalhorse How is the horse being "tortured"? I see no signs of stress on this horse, he is calm, and well trained. He's a little over collected, but I think he's doing it on his own because the rider is not holding onto the reins and there is lots of slack if you look closely. This horse is FINE, just very talented!
Fascinating, and I love seeing the rider work solely off his legs. But it would be more impressive if the horse weren't so overflexed. The poor thing can't even seen in front of him with his head cranked like that, and it's got to be hard on his back and neck. But I know overflexion = beauty in this culture. I bet if he tried this without a bridle at all the horse would be just as good.
@katphoti Well if he's over collected, hes doing it on his own, cause there is a lot of slack on those reins if you look closely. But yes Id like to see him bitless too!
@hawaiianpony He's trained to hold himself like that. It's very easy to tie a horse's head down and force it to stand like that to get that kind of false collection. It creates muscle memory so the horse always holds his head like that. Plus this horse's back is hollow because he is trying to strain to hold his head in that position. Unfortunately, it's very "normal" in this culture to have over flexed horses like this.
I'd be more impressed if he could do it without a bridle and the horse was not held in hyperflexion with its neck stuffed back into its shoulders with a strong curb bit

The reins are fastened to the front of the saddle - tight, so that the horse's head is restrained in this stylish arch at all times. Signals must therefore come from the rider's legs and, especially, the spurs.
I wanted to point out, the reins are not fastened very tightly on this horse (they are short, but there is very little tension). He was probably trained with strict reins though. Here he is keeping his nose behind the vertical of his own will (it's very obvious when he canters around at the end, since his nose pushes out much further then).
This is simply a /very/ well trained horse and rider.
I've watched them training and have done a bit (very basic) myself. You never haul on their mouths or jag at them or hurt them at all - you can't achieve such exploits by roughness. However, when the horse comes to a standstill, you do keep just feeling the reins, tightening and releasing, tightening and releasing, but just very, very lightly, until the horse gets into the habit of holding himself collected as soon as the rider mounts.
I'm not explaining it very well - I know how to do it, but not how to say it. Everything is done with a light touch and nearly everything they do is done entirely by changing the rider's balance, but also with use of legs. Often, they wouldn't be able to use the reins when working. Their horses have to be collected all the time, or they couldn't respond fast enough or accurately enough, as you need to do when you're working cattle and especially bulls.
Off all the videos i have just seen, this is truly magnificent. both horse and rider communicating to create a beautiful dance. this is truly a special relationship. wow, who knew there was something more exciting than dressage. these two have brought horsemanship to a new level. such a dance only means a treacherous ending for a bull. can you hunt down more video of this team? I will check out the videos you mentioned earlier.
great real nice horse and sure the rider is great too - by the way i did look at all your videos!! Ok i love all Ridingparts and the horses - but some animal looses to much in your videos! - sorry my way of thinking - but it is ok for me - i respect it! -
I thought this was impressive until about halfway through I realized the rider wasn't even USING THE REINS. Then I thought it was one of the most incredible displays of horsemanship I've ever seen. Thank you for posting this beautiful video.
I'm glad you people like it. You should all go see another of my videos, click on "More from this user" and select "Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza: Rabo en La Plaza de Toros Mexico". You will see three amazing horses.
I believe you are the first one to post this wonderful video, and for this I thank you very much.It has brought to the horse community something very special. This type of equestrian lightness is seldom seen nowadays. smithywess

lagr01 3 years ago

lagr01 3 years ago

lagr01 3 years ago
gatunegru 3 years ago
lagr01 3 years ago
freemanmgd 3 years ago
freemanmgd 3 years ago

The reins are fastened to the front of the saddle - tight, so that the horse's head is restrained in this stylish arch at all times. Signals must therefore come from the rider's legs and, especially, the spurs.
It is an impressive performance.
rollkur 4 years ago
I wanted to point out, the reins are not fastened very tightly on this horse (they are short, but there is very little tension). He was probably trained with strict reins though. Here he is keeping his nose behind the vertical of his own will (it's very obvious when he canters around at the end, since his nose pushes out much further then).
This is simply a /very/ well trained horse and rider.
baileydanger 4 years ago
The reins are attached to his waist. If you look he has one hand on the pole and his hat in the other.
cwdancinfool 4 years ago
To achieve what is shown in this video, there wouldnt have been any "strict rein" training.
Mrhappydude69 3 years ago
I've watched them training and have done a bit (very basic) myself. You never haul on their mouths or jag at them or hurt them at all - you can't achieve such exploits by roughness. However, when the horse comes to a standstill, you do keep just feeling the reins, tightening and releasing, tightening and releasing, but just very, very lightly, until the horse gets into the habit of holding himself collected as soon as the rider mounts.
Katencantada 2 years ago
I'm not explaining it very well - I know how to do it, but not how to say it. Everything is done with a light touch and nearly everything they do is done entirely by changing the rider's balance, but also with use of legs. Often, they wouldn't be able to use the reins when working. Their horses have to be collected all the time, or they couldn't respond fast enough or accurately enough, as you need to do when you're working cattle and especially bulls.

Look Ma! No Hands! Very nice. What are the reins attached to? His waist? There's nothing like watching a 'well-trained' horse.

BRAVO..
Excellent - I did not know this was practiced outside of the bull fight. Thank you for sharing. Gracias

I thought this was impressive until about halfway through I realized the rider wasn't even USING THE REINS. Then I thought it was one of the most incredible displays of horsemanship I've ever seen. Thank you for posting this beautiful video.
