I grew up in the East and I never really realized it was so different. Then I came to the South & West Coasts and saw a lot more segregation. It was a little sad bec. all my friends growin up were Jamaican, Dominican, Colombian, Guyanese, PR-no one cared. You kept your own culture but got to know other people's too.

While white people will associate themselves (music, fashion) to black people before mexican. Puerto Ricans associate themselves to black because they are basically half-black themselves. This is one reason why mexicans don't associate to puerto ricans. Only reason mexicans listen to and dance salsa is because the vocals are in spanish. The music originates form West Africa (Black).

No, no, no, no, no. Mexicans have the largest population, and that's all. Having a power base is having an influence on the world. Beside Taco Bell, Mexicans influence on the world is almost non-existent compared to Carribean latinos. Everything comes from the east first. You know that. NY, then LA is second, then Chicago. Whether you guys are talking about salsa, hip hop, breakdancing, etc. Mexicans are not trend setters. You need African blood in you to do that.

American culture is different for one, and Latinos are much different than other ethnicities. The hot-blooded nature most latin people have tends to easily keep them separated, much the same way American blacks and African blacks don't see eye to eye on most things. I'm Hispanic and although I have some similarities to Puerto Ricans or Cubans, I also see differences. These small differences serve to keep people at odds. That is essentially what the issue is.

Also, Hispanics are the largest minority group in the U.S. now, larger than blacks, asians, middle-eastern, Native Americans, everyone. It's a different game now. I have lived in Europe so I understand how things are there to a degree, but you wouldn't understand unless you're American, and a minority here. I don't see myself as a "minority" persay, just an individual. I also primarily date pale white women, so that sets me apart from alot of "ethnic" Latinos generally. It's multi-faceted.

Lopez is Chicano and based in the West.

You'll never see a Puerto Rican, Dominican, Cuban or other Latino garner that much power in the entertainment field.

There have been some exceptions, like Jennifer Lopez who is Rican, but most are Mexican. It's not even close. Traditional Latinas don't gravitate towards black culture. Most I've met don't like blacks at all. You tell me why.

@DIVISIONINCISION It depends on the country, but i think that a lot of latin people aren´t used to live with black people in their countries. Believe it or not, there are not so many black people in some latin countries and usualy the live in an specific region. Thats my opinion.

For example: I´m latin and i like black people even if in my school, my family and mi city are hard to find. Actually, i have some black friends because I lived in london for a wile. They were nice.

The truth is that in colombia you can find all kind of people; from black/african in the north coast to "mestizos" with brown skin or people like me. I´ve lived in europe for a couple of months and people don´t believe that I´m latin until they see the way I dance, the way I walk and the way I talk.
