I'm using this as a piece for a college audition this weekend. I wouldn't have been able to learn it so well without this video. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
@1401JSC My mother was perfectly capable of singing and playing at same time (and performed live on BBC many times in the days recordings were the exception), so maybe so.
Not sure what a "true 'Schubert voice' is - didn't think he had that label attached to his Lieder.
This is wonderful and I think his gift was to bring out the very best in the very best singers because his songs are so strong, cope well with (some) transposing and can be interpreted in so many ways.
I love this, love Fritz, worshp Lucia and just adore Christa - all very different singers, with very different voices. Love them all.

thanks for posting this song! its one I'm doing for my solo and the other ones I looked at were either a different key or not that good of a copy/ recording. thanks!
THANK YOU!! i'm learning this song and i don't know any german, much less how to pronounce all the words. listening to the german and following the words helped me so so much!
I would have to respectfully disagree, this song is done beautifully as a Baritone. George London, for example, does a great version. The text itself is quite
yes Quasthoff does have a version of this song. there's a video on youtube (its with orchestra accompinament), plus its on one of his cds (which i believe is called "the voice")
If ever you have the chance go see the autograph in the British Museum in London. I was deeply impressed to see that he wrote his own name so much smaller than the one of his friend who wrote the lyrics that without his music would have been just a nice poem.
I sang this song for a recital, I was going through an interesting time in my life and this song really hit home. I love the way its sung, its absolutely beautiful.
Thanks a lot to the poster. You can enjoy it also with a baritone voice (Dieskau, Qualsthoff) or with Terry Wey & the Vienna Boys' Choir. Beautiful, solemn, touching!
Do you have Schubert's "Serenade" (Leise flehen meine Lieder)? I'd love to see that here.
Keep on practicing, I've been doing it with and without vocal teachers for nearly 15 years now. It's expensive, exhausting and frustrating sometimes. But I love it! :-)
I'm sure I have at least 10 different versions of the Serenade. I have been searching for the other serenade of his for some time though.. The one for soprano and a male choir. But, sure I can upload the famous serenade for you. And thanks for encouragement.

Is the music is in the key she is singing, or maybe one and a half steps lower?
Spanglefeather 9 months ago
@Spanglefeather
Its in the correct key. The woman singing just makes it sound higher than it is xD I was surprised too when I realized it was in the same key.

Das Lied ist der ideale Lackmustest, ob ein Sänger deutsche Romantik versteht. Sie tut es leider überhaupt nicht.

Hi, Joey.
It's kind of you to reply to my...rhetorical questions. In fact I was gently criticisng this pianist :)
Actually le modern pedal has not at all the same effect as up to 7 pedals on the pianoforte of Schubert's day.
Most of his piano music can be played withoutout the pedal. Try it! Everything becomes much clearer.
Since the chords in the RH can be repeated (bewebung) without entirely letting up the keys, you harly need the pedal.

Moderato 2/2, not moderato 4/4!
What do the staccato dots mean to the pianist?
And fp?
And >?
Beautiful voice.
Love Felicity Lott of the 1970s & 80s.
Some pairs of 1/8 notes are sung unequally "short-long". Awful modern tendancy.
Who is he (Graham Johnson?)
