  • Warning: DO NOT drop acid before you watch this! LOL (Love it - voted up!)

  • rockin'

  • They're like a Japanese version of the Breeders!

  • @scartissue94 it's the other way around. Shonen Knife released their first album in 1983, seven years before The Breeders first release in 1990

  • @scartissue94 You should check out the band "noodles". They are the Japanese Breeders!!

  • I love this song. I miss Shonen Knife; last saw them @ their SF show in 1998.

  • The totally Japanese answer to Nirvana

  • @665885 Eh... Apparently, Nirvana was formed in 1987. Shonen Knife? 1981; six years earlier. NIRVANA were fans of Shonen Knife.

  • KAWAII!!! @SHONENKNIFE ARE BRILLIANT!!!! <3

  • one of kurt cobain's favourite bands.. its punkrock that me and my kids can listen to!

  • they all sleep together?! thats just wrong................... im not saying its bad (shonen knife is the best band ever) just its kinnnda wrong to have three girls or three boys sleep in the same bed................... see what i mean?

  • @dagmann1 Oh theres always one gutterbrain isnt there.. nursary rhyme: there was 10 in the bed n the lil one said roll over roll over so they all rolled over and one fell out.. there was 9 in the .....and on it goes.. its japan baby.. kitsch n kooky n childish n cute..

  • THIS IS SO CUTE :) what kinda EVIL airport says you cant take a kitty in? :O lololol who could think up such an abomination??????

  • No cats allowed? Fuck it, lets take the rainbow instead.

  • simple easy listening rock song

    Banzai, salam dari Indonesia

  • This version is even better than the original

  • this is terrible.. the monkees ftw

  • bad ass animation wonder what it is

  • @ninjadork23 Its based on the cartoons of Japanese underground artist "Nara"; who did the designs of the girls for the CD cover of the 1999 album called "Happy Hour"

  • Sounds like crap....

  • THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME !!!!!!

  • Cherrup Davey jones oh what can it be to ar suck cardiff bastards and a shit football team

  • @Santaisreal100

That doesn't exactly rhyme now does it, Santa? Given that you have the linguistic skills of an uneducated and deeply stupid walrus, I presume you're a dirty, peg selling inbred bastard from the dirty gyppo west?

  • @Santaisreal100 What in the hell did you just say ?? In an actual language, please.

  • R U ALL HIGH!?!?

  • Poor Atsuko, those animators made her head way too big!

  • John Stewart sang it first not the Monkees, whose version is by far the most popular and often confused as the "original" version, these guys rock check out their version of "top of the world"

  • God this is an awesome cover!

  • this is so unbelievably cool. the beatles did this song

    oooh A CAT!!! yaay

  • This is a cover of a monkeys song lol

  • balls out rock and fucking roll! this is sooo kickass!

  • Punk's not dead!

    It's just... very happy.

  • Even in cartoon form, Naoko looks more like Michie, than her own sister! haha

  • japanese music at its best!

  • cool! what country are they from? america? if so american artists are amazing! i wish i was as good as them but i guess my voice is rubbish :(

  • @Michaelwaters123 They are Japanese

  • @lassiesmash thanks for telling me! i guess japan can produce good music shown in this song :)

  • @Michaelwaters123 Oh...I hope you know this is an old song by The Monkeys. Lots of good punk covers of their songs.

  • I think the cat makes the whole video. lol

  • They ever play Vegas, I'm There!!!

  • It sucks that the singer/lead is the only original member left... :-/

  • shonen knife live in manila Feb. 27, 2010

  • o_O I heard about this news the other day, and i was like "no way in hell omg really you can't be joking!!" in my mind. lol

  • AAH! SHONEN KNIFE!! *shudders, falls to floor twitching in fright* POR QUEEE???

  • I'm pretty sure it was Kevin Karn who gave a Shonen Knife record to Rob Wilharm who then brought a tape back to Seattle.

  • We all went crazy over this band in Seattle in the 80's when Rob Wilharm brought back a tape from Osaka.

  • Cheer Up Sleepy Jean!

  • They're playing in my town. Nyahhh.

  • i miss them... i just realized something.. did Yoshitomo Nara made these animated characters?

  • There's nothing to miss - they're still around, have a new album out, and they're touring the US right now!

  • oh i didn't know that.. well i wish i live in the US.. D:

    thanks anyway..

  • @deazaskia Well, he created the designs yes... for the cover of the album "Happy Hour"

  • Makes me cry every time. No idea why.

  • i feel so sorry for the cat

  • fucking awesome ! this version is soooo catchy

  • That was kinda creepy.... : O

  • Интересно.

  • Awesome cover and that guitar playing IS epic!

  • They forget to change the line "You once thought of me as a white knight on a steed" to "I once thought of you as a white knight on a steed" as Murray did. Otherwise, the "shaving razor stings" refers to shaving one's legs.

  • It used to be quite acceptable for females to sing songs whose lyrics indicated that they were meant for male singers. But now, everyone is so damned anal.

    *sigh* ah...those were the days...

  • que alguien las traiga a españa ya

  • I love it!!! Especially the guitar. Might use a guitar sound like that for one of my songs.

  • The guitar is pretty epical if that's a word. :D

  • SK always rocked!

  • i cant stop listening to this it's soo good!

sounds a little like the buzzcocks this rocks soo fuggin hard! x x ww

  • Ryan Reynolds!

  • The video is kinda weird but I love this song!

  • Dude, what's wrong with rubbish?

  • I loved it! So cute :3

  • If my cat did that I'd hug him

  • your so random

  • Shonen Knife subscribed to my myspace blog... Kind of a weird thing if you ask me, but it does make me smile.

  • I never heard this version!! This is great--I am bowled the fuck over!!!

  • Thumbs up for gratuitous swearing, 666 in a metal name and a cat in a video

  • These are the best of times...or are you taking a piss?...sorry...American :)

  • Sadly no.

    "Slayer"!

  • I actually hate new Slayer-Iron Monkey were a British sludge/hardcore band from Nottingham, I believe-I actually like more HC/Punk/grind, etc.-the '666' is just a symbolization of the rejection of Semitic/Middle Eastern religions and it was part of Iron Monkey's logo-not intended to represent hair-farmer, horns-up 'Metal' in this case-get to know me (i.e. look at my Favorties?) before making assumptions.

PS: I abhor Slipknot, Korn, Metallica and whatever other garbage passes for 'Metal' too.

  • "sorry"

    i meant

    *ma(n)gAZyn*

  • nirvana

    good hook

    if there is one

    it would be

    have been

    the mangaSsScene

  • i saw this band live in 1993 when they opened for Nirvana.

  • actually kurt was one of their fans

  • This is by far the best cover I've ever heard. I love The Monkees' original, but this takes the cake. These girls can really rock. <3

    Shonen Knife is Godly.

  • A cool power pop take on the Monkees classic.

  • wii music lool

  • what are u talking about.. this is way older than wii :)

  • I love SK <3

  • You are kidding of course.this is the way this song should sound. The original is toss.

  • Shonen Knife rule, but don't dismiss The Monkees: they were a huge influence on The Beatles you know!

  • wow.. i wanted to kill myself after watchin this.. the origional is WAY better. this is just freakin LAME... the cats cool tho

  • that is good

  • momo singing a good song is not that good

  • Wow! Now that's what I call Rock 'n Roll!

  • I think it's cute :D

  • WOW LMFAO! Why is there only 3 people?! >:O

Unless that cats the singer :l

  • The band only has 3 people. They share vocal duties, although Naoko (lead guitar) is the primary vocalist on this song. You can actually see this in the animations of the band playing near the end of the video.

  • A ton of great bands only have 3 members, Blink 182, Rush, Green Day, The Goo Goo Dolls, ZZ Top, Nirvana, it's possible to sing and play at the same time.

  • Green Day is lame, the rest of the bands you mentioned are amazing though.

By the way, without Kurt Cobain of Nirvana most people wouldn't have heard of Shonen Knife,or any of the K Record signed bands... Even though Nirvana was Sub Pop,Kurt was into K Records alot.

  • My Dr. Pepper came out my nose from laughing at this. Fucking hilarious.

The Japs have no idea how cool and amusing they are at the same time.

  • is this the beta version on wii music? look at the people.

  • Man Shonen Knife have a spirit!!!!!!!! A great rock spirit!!!! I love this music really it gives me chills and i feel like it is great to live !!!! :):):) thank you Shonen Knife!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • musn't forget the vaselines. and kurt loved this band. ^^

  • fair enough, but kurt still liked this band hehe. n__n

  • i would rather listen to this than that whiny fuck.

  • Theres a interview on youtube where kurt talks about Shonen Knife :3. And Kurt got pissed off at the audience that night because of that =.=

  • How long has shonen knife been around? I just ask because of the timing of his passing.

  • I first came across Shonen Knife in the mid 80's and they are awesome live.

  • Comment removed

  • @theoubliette They will be celebrating 30 yrs as a band , in 2011

  • his songs are really good you know

  • You are shit. Meat Puppets, the Pixies, the Melvins were all brilliant. But you, you are nothing more than an elitist asshole on youtube with an aversion to bright colours.

  • mrnotsoeasy has clearly never read Journals.

  • i LOVE SHONEN KNIFE - THEY DO GOOD ALT VERSIONS !

  • Kurt Cobain's favorite band!!

  • If u dont like Shonen Knife the cosmos takes a huge dump on your head forever.

  • Please disregard all those young, ignorant, and foolish people (that dare think they know anything about punk)!

Shonen Knife is one of the pre-eminent punk bands out of Japan! Their live shows are frickin' unbelieveable!! Of course an 18 year old postee can't even get into above said show, so disregard their assinine posts!

Shonen Knife--You Gals Rock!!!! COME BACK TO DETROIT SOON!!!!!!

  • some kinda drunk bitch at karaoke?

  • I'm scared

  • Many people tell me that Japan's best music has either been industrial-symphonic-drone-noise metal that surpasses anywhere else in the world.

Obviously there has been great musicians fitting any of those (Boris, Melt-Banana, Les Les Rallizes Dénudés anyone?), but I still like to retain my opinion that Japan's greatest band is an all-girl pop-punk band.

  • I gotta say, my favourite band from Japan besides Shonen Knife are Eternal Elysium. Stoner rock from Japan is awesome

  • Warrabout Boris and Gallhammer? Shit is kvlt!!!

  • Gallhammer is about too depressing

  • I agree--it is the kind of music you either love or hate but I guess I was just trying to give an example of a good Japanese, predominantly female 3-piece--much love.

  • I guess some of their tunes are ok, Beyond the hate red. I actually like to listen to them in the dark after watching a good horror movie-but nothing's that scary these days

  • Personally, I love it!
