  • I enjoyed this very very much!

  • The singer who is sitting to her left is SEETA HIRABET. She is Vidushi Gangubai Hangal's first and oldest pupil.Unfortunately she passed away before gangubaiji and krishnaji when she was in her early eighties.

  • I don't know why but I feel horribly sad for the old woman on the left... (

  • Gangubai, Kishoriji on one hand and Pt. Jasraj and Pt. Bhimsen on the other. Imagine if they collaborated.

  • It is very sad that the Late Gangubaiji's daughter Krishna ji passed away a few years before her mother, of throat cancer.

  • rajshri you have done a great job of putting concerts of divine a stars on you tube

  • Apparently, Late. Gangubai Hangal had to undergo a throat operation (see wikipedia). Maybe, that is the reason why she needs to clear her voice more frequently.

  • Very Very thanks for this rear video. I listen her 4 to 5 times from my childhood at my native Gwalior in Tansen Samaroh All great artists attended that programme to give to honour of miyaan Tansen. She was great, and all time sung her daughter krishna Hangal with her.

  • can any one tell me more about the singer sitting to the left of gangubai, she sings so softly . is she still sings,if so any link to listen to her?

can anyone tell if the daughter of late gangubai also sings classical.some info if affirmative, waiting for reply

  • @iftikharqazi she is krishna hangal, the illustrious daughter of vidushi gangubai hangal.she is a great classical singer by her own right.many of her audio files are available.i have posted rag deshkar sung by mother daughter duo on my channel.you can check that

  • @thuryina i m really grateful to u for responding to me. rag deshker i ve already down loaded.fantastic it is. would u please guide me how to get solo recitals of krishna hangal. she sings so sweet so soothing. i read somewhere that krishna too has passed away.is it true?does vidushi mean late in hindi? pl help me in getting more recitals of the mother and her great daughter. i repent why didnt i heard about them ago

  • @iftikharqazi - vidushi doesn't mean late- it means "learned lady"

  • @SherniSimba thanks for correcting me

  • @iftikharqazi she is vidushi krishna hangal, the illustrious daughter of vidushi gangubai hangal.she is a great classical singer by her own right.she sang mostly with her mother but occasionally she gave solo recitals.a few of her audio files are available.i have posted rag deshkar sung by mother and daughter on my channel.you can check that

  • great singer and great who saved and posted this piece of art

  • She is pretty good

  • amazing, melody par-exellence!

  • an ascending spinning spiral of joy

  • Parexcellence music, singer is a gem of Indian classic music.I wish I had heared of her music earlier.

    Jacee California

  • Really we are great....

that we are living and enjoying

    the great Legend's Kacheri's.

  • R.I.P. Dr. Gangubai Hangal

  • With her sudden demise yesterday, an age of melodious Hindustani classical music and an almost lifelong struggle has come to an end. Long live her music and her name and may her soul rest in peace for ever. She was a saintly person and devoted to her music and owed her music to her Guru--Savai Gandharva, great musician and teacher and deciple of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan of Kirana Gharana (school).

  • For this beautiful rag tabla should have been more restrained and steady.

  • Tabla is probably by Gangubai's brother Sheshagiri Hanagal.

    harmonium, the legendary Appa Jalagaonkar

  • One presumes her accompanist -- with voice and looks VERY similar to hers -- is her daughter Krishna?

Hope someone posts more of her singing here!

    RIP, Doyenne Bai!

  • Yes, her daughter Krishna Hanagal, who passed away unfortunately before her mother

  • looks like ladies night out

  • do we have holiday tomorrow

    can any 1 confirm

  • she s dead -(

  • a true legend

    pride of karnataka !

  • wow... I can't believe she is gone too! First Vilayat Khansahib, just this past month Baba Ali Akbar Khan, and now Smtji, what a loss to the world of Hindustani Classical Music. We musicians from all over the world must work together to bring this music to its rightful place, and preserve those high standards and keep learning from these great legends for a rebirth and new future in this music.

  • You forgot to mention Pattamal.

  • RIP Gangubhai Hangal...Agree with Maymusic....beats me to think that there are only 17000+ views for this piece...!

  • real art attracts only a few with the requisite psycho-aesthetic sensibilities and intellect to appreciate the music...feel blessed that you are one of them!

May Smt. Hangal's soul rest in peace!

  • RIP

  • Rest in Peace O legend of Kirana Gharana

  • May her soul rest in peace...

  • i like the fact that everyone in this vid are aged musicians....its nice n all to see the younger generation but its like finding treasure when a vidoe like this is posted....thank you

  • I just read her biography ,here are a few excerpts .....

''' Nicknamed "gaanewali", she was ostracized by the orthodox brahmins..Gangubai says: " I remember the neighbours being horrified that a singer's daughter should step into their compound. I would be thrown out. Incidentally, the same people invite me over to their house today and call me 'Gangubai' with great respect...''''''

  • I dont like that clearing throat voice its irritating whenever I m trying to concentrate...THE PERFORMANCE IS BRILLIANT...

  • its the age buddy... its nothing big

  • Indian classical vocal is not opera, it's quite common to hear a singer clear his/her voice.

  • Her short rendition [ 78 RPM record] of Aasawari [ Maata Bhavani] is breath taking.

  • what a don....love her!!!

  • This legendary singer, Gangubai Hangal, is 96 years old (1913 born). She is an asset to the nation.

  • Absolutely beguiling..Thank you for this gem!

  • She is TREMENDOUS. Why is there not more of her on CD recordings or even on youtube? If only we had half of what Bhimsen Joshi has had released on CD.

  • Gangubai, Bhimsen are now national treasures.

We have been blessed to hear them in our life time.thank you for loading this concert

  • tabla is Sheshgiri Hangal, Harmonium is Appa Jalgaonkar and the vocal backup is her daughter (now deceased) Krishna Hangal.

  • Who is this outstanding Harmonium Wizard?

  • Appa Jalgaonkar

  • vah!! Kya baat ah

  • Why is her hand on her head all the time? I've never seen any other singer do this.

  • Actually she is putting her hand over her ear an closing one ear. This helps the singer to listen to what they are singing. Even if a monitor is available still this gives the singer perfect idea of whether the are singing the correct note. I hope this helps.

  • learn indian clasical music first,

  • You are absolutely right!

In the generation of great vocalists of 1900's, almost every great master used this method to get a complete feedback of the notes and the pitch. No wonder they achieved such greatness.

The Late Gangubai was one of the greatest vocalists of the past century!

May her soul rest in peace.

  • Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees also did that for the same reason.

What a treat to see a video of this lengendary singer. She is now 95 years old I believe.

  • you probably haven't seen/listen to much music, singers who used to singer before the microphone era did this very often...

  • Her Raag "Malkauns" and "chandrakauns" rendering is simply superb. One can not resist listening.

  • She renders raag "Malkauns" in a very authenticated style. One can not resist from listening to her composition

  • Wow!! never expected Gangubai on YouTube! What a treat. Thanks for uploading this. Yes, its a rare gem indeed.

  • It is Gangibai Hangal, not GanguBHAI. Please correct it. thanx for the upload. It is a rare gem.
