  • Here we are Mate! I completely forget my message till you answer, thanks for!! I finaly bought my US stratocaster 50th anniversary with texas special, since last March, you can check my chanel and see Another brick in the wall solo cover...tell me what you think..by the way yeah man, it's sound pretty perfect to my ear with each tone on my POD X3..I'm too happy with..thanks again for the explanation

  • Killer Strat tone.

  • @Funkyryno Hey Thanks :-)

  • Very nice playing indeed!

  • @GuitarPlayerGeo Thanks :-)

  • Just like Keeblers snacks. Uncommonly good.

  • @green66vw He he! That's very kind :-)

  • Love the fast licks around 0:30, how do you play em so smooth?

  • @alexmc69 Thanks. Just practice I guess :-)

  • Great playing, i paused tons of times. Trying to watch you're technique. especially the rakes.

  • @blakmagik4 Thanks, hope it was useful :-)

  • hey!is the a classic players 60s strat

  • @Guitar1hero23 It's just a bitsa, 60's RI neck and an aftermarket body

  • I'm just amazed ...you must go your own way and make music for us...you're too great many people think that playin guitar is just a matter of speed or a puting arround a thousand of notes...but man you're the one...this is what I call such a fucking killer feeling...wish I could get it !! I'm about to buy a fender US with a texas special even if I'm not too bluesy in my music ..wanna know if this pickups are good too for prog rock style which is mine as pink floyd riff arpegios solos etc

  • @blownspirit Thanks for the kind words! :-) I think most mid range strats will get you a decent enough sound for what you want. Texas Specials are very overwound and middly so should sound less wimpy than normal singles. :-)

  • omg the licks at 0:30 are amazing i would give my left nut to learn them

  • @R0BERTMAY Lol! I would personally want to hang on to my left nut (both in fact) :-) Thanks tho

  • very nice Ron :))

  • i say you kicked its but

  • i say you kicked its ass

  • @bassbob5 Cheers Bob :-)

  • awesome moch' - keep it up bro

  • @melarnzy I certainly will mate, ta :-)

  • Ron, That was super! Wish could play half as well...

  • @hawaiidoves very kind cheers Bud :-)

  • Great ! Can u give some info about guitar-pickups and amp ? Thanks !

  • @Geokouu Certainly mate, what would you like to know? Amp is a Fender Blues Junior and pickups (in use) are a '59 strat pickup and a SD Alnico 2.

  • To the very hart of SRV, God bless his soul...

Fabulous, thanks a lot for this!

  • fucking good stuff.

  • superb feel man ! really, I really dig it

  • Hey again. Sorry for the late reply...thanks alot for your tips mate. I've just started learning a bunch of blues scales i printed out and it's certainly given me a much needed boost. you can play random scales all you like but nothing sounds the same as a proper scale. Just sounds right, ya know? lol. anyway thanks again, you're a legend for the wickid response. CHEERS :-)

  • i cant hear soul there, but thats just my opinion

  • .....like you! :P

  • ...and work on making it sound good by being as restricted as possible. This will help you stick to one key as I noticed when you jam you tend to wander around keys. Get as many backing tracks as possible in your preferred style, this would help with timing (and key). Also learn a whole bunch of songs and any simple solos, this helps tons. Also (just my opinion) but try and use less effects, a little reverb and a little overdrive (not) lets you hear what you're playing. Enjoy & thanks again :-)

  • "Hope you liked it" ahh yeah you could say that!!

Damn my friend, if there is ever a way to satisfy your soul, this would be it.

How did you learn all of this? Am I right by guessing you've just improvised to basic tabs you printed off the internet?I ask this cos I feel stuck with my playing....there's still alot of passion,so it'll improve eventually, but i dont really have an aim...Cos i've never been taught...any chance u could watch 1 of my vids and tell me what i need to learn to play

  • Hi RT

Firstly thanks for the kudos, very kind :-)

In answer to your question re: how I play like that. I've never printed tabs from the internet in my life lol. I started playing 20 years before I even owned a computer. I basically learning songs/solos from records/tapes, figured out what a blues scale and went from there. I watched some of your vids, just off the top of my head I would say you could stick to one place, say pentatonic shape 1, in a given key.....

  • good job guy check out mine and post a coment...

  • Thanks I will :-)

  • Nice :)

  • Thanks :-)

  • Your rake is perfect, great technique. Listen to it a 100 times.

    Arne, Canada

  • Very kind, cheers :-)

  • Awesome playin', my friend !!!

    Great tone too, THX *****

    Kurt...

  • Thank a lot :-)

  • i would a tutorial man this is simply amazing

  • Amazing Dudeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • WOW, that sounds so great!

    5* :-)

would you tell me in which pickup-position do you play this part?

and whats the secret that it sounds like so much like a pearl? is it because of your pickups, or maybe your amp?

  • Thanks mate, very kind. It was played on the 4th position (front and mid pickup on). As far as the tone goes I have no secrets :-) It's a bitsacaster with a lead into a Fender Blues Junior. Strings are 10s and pickups are not overwound (around 6k) so I reckon anyone could get the same setup no probs.

Glad you like it, thanks again :-)

  • may this is a '62 vintage strat??

  • I wish it was :-) It's a mongrel/partsocaster ('62RI neck, aftermarket body), bit does have a real '59 pickup in the front position (Seymour Duncan Alinico II in the middle and a Fralin Vintage Hot in the bridge).

The strat in my 'string popping' vid is a stock 1964 strat though.

  • really good sound 5 stars bro

  • Thanks mate :-)

  • Stop showing off and concentrate on a melody. Sounds like a bagful of random licks spilled out onto the floor...

  • :-) thanks for your input, much appreciated. Would be great if you could post some videos of yourself playing a slow blues (for example) for me to get an idea of how to move forward. Look forward to seeing your vids soon, thanks again.

  • Stop being so negative and concentrate on your own playing then maybe you'll be able to play half as good as this.. Good job Ron.

  • Cheers for the support TLFD, very kind. Maybe I meander a little in the vid but I was going (trying) for that SRV vibe as per the original tune. Anyhow glad you like it, take care :-)

  • can someone please point me in the direction of where i can get these backing tracks? thanks

  • hey mr sayer, you used to teach me guitar at high school, you look different with short hair. your still a guitar god though!!

  • Guitar God LOL thanks, which high school was that? Thought I'd lose the long hair before it fell out :-)

  • it was framingham earl high school. you was in a group called spider murphy at the time. i had really big hair, and i dint like nirvana. lol

  • Hey man, this video looks awsome.

What is it your trick for so good audio and video quality? Got any web pages to send me a "how to" on making one of these?

  • Cheers, not sure why it looks and sounds that good. It's a good HD camera but it's just the mic on the camera in the room. Look for 'Izzy Video' for some excellent video making tips. :-)

  • great blues playing

  • Thanks man :-)

  • Man, where did you get that blues feeling from?

  • Lol, well I'm not particularly depressed so not really sure!! :-)

  • are you kidding me?? how good does this sound!!! woooow...I play, but am an insult to guitarists like yourself sir. My poor finger are as fat as sausages so i struggle with tone, wish I coud play like this...excellent...thnak you for posting...5 stars, favorited!!

  • That's very kind. My fingers are in the sausage region too but less greasy lol. I keep trying :-)

  • straight into the amp... just goes to prove that tone comes from the fingers, not the row of stomp boxes that i tend to use.

  • Sweeeeeeeeeeeet..

  • Thaaaaaaaaaaaaanks :-)

  • thank you very much..

  • No thank you :-)

  • is there a kind of pedal did you use and sounds like that or was just from the amp.?

  • Hi

This was just the strat plugged direct into the Blues Junior. :-)

  • Just dropped in to rate this as your finest work on you tube so far mate. Well done

  • Thanks Lee, hope you're well mate.

  • wow awesome! are you playin thru the blues deluxe like your other vids? again awesome playin man

  • Nope this is the Blues Junior Tweed Ltd Edition.

  • would you say the blues jr. and the blues deluxe are very similar

  • Sort of, it's in the same area tonewise. But I would say the blues junior is better. The Deluxe can sound harsh live and strangely enough the junior seems to stay cleaner at higher levels whereas the deluxe gets 'mushy'. There's a definite difference, a speaker change may help this though.

  • Smooth

  • That almost migh've been Stevie playing.. Amazing playing and understanding 5+

  • Wow thanks! That's quite a compliment :-)

  • Come back to paston

  • great sound and playing!

  • Thanks mate! :-)

  • I can tell your a very good player by watching your fingers. you play somewhat light, kind of floating around the neck. You like that pinky finger also. I've tried to play lightly like that, but for some reason can't. GREAT PLAYING..........

  • Cheers! I like to use the 'light and shade' aspect, just relax instead of tensing up and playing lightly is easy enough. I've always been conscientious about using the little finger (need all the help available LOL) Thanks for your comment :-)

  • how many hours do you practise??? ans pls!!!

  • Not many hours these days I'm afraid. I gig every week but I rarely get more than an hour's practice in a week if that :-(

  • Excellent!Great playing and sound, very good technic and great Blues feeling :D very impressive.

  • Thanks Bud. very kind of you to say :-)

  • awesome

  • It's like watching a how to video and I mean that in a good way. Freaking awesome! Isn't it fun to play slow blues like that. I love it!

  • great great sound! keep it up!

  • Really awesome!

Wish to play like you someday!;)

Thanks for sharing! Hope you will made great career!!!

  • Hey hey ron, i was just curious as to what thickness strings you were using? It sounds a little thin, not sure if thicker strings might help. This is just me nitpicking tho i love it! :D

  • Hi. Thanks for the comment, I used pretty big strings a few years back (13-58) but I'm getting old now and I'd rather keep playing and sound like I do as opposed to suffer with tendonitis and carpal tunnel syndrome etc. Basically I'm pretty happy with the combination of tone, playability and minimal finger abuse 10's give me. As you probably know even SRV dropped down a few gauges near the end of his life, and I'm no SRV :-)

  • That's cool, ive got tendonitis in my wrist and elbow in both arms so i think it's probably a good idea for me to do the same thing. Stevie's hands were mad!!!

  • hey nice playing man!

i was just wondering how you're muting those strings on the series of rakes 1:20-26; it looks like you're using the palm of your right hand because I don't see the thumb of left hand curling over much. Would appreciate if you could confirm or deny this. I've been trying to learn how to do that because my hands aren't anywhere near as big as SRV's were so I can't use my thumb except to mute the low E. You get much better tone from that though.

  • Post more vids! Would love to here you play some more.

  • Thanks! I will try to post more soon. If you'd like to hear the band check out my space /theronsayerband

    :-)

  • Cheers mate. I had a look at 1.20 onwards re: the rakes. I think I'm using my thumb rather than my right palm. At 1.23 onwards I do 3 in row and my thumb bends over the top two strings, the D is taken care of by the G bend and my left hand fingers take care of the rest. I think part if the technique here lends itself to a highish action because when I bend, the strings sit on top of my fingers rather than have the string slip underneath. Hopefully you know what I mean by that :-) Thanks again

  • ah yes I see now... thanks for the explanation

    will check out your band.

  • VERY nice tone.

  • what extra string are u hitting on 0:03? is it the 1st or 2nd? =D

  • S**t man, I had to sit and work that out! I think you mean the hammer-on I do on the D string from A to B. I hit the G on the 7th fret when I hit the A (also on the 7th fret). It's a minor 3rd interval along with a m7th note. Hope that helped a bit :-)

  • Wicked stuff mate i like it!!!! :D

  • Many Thanks!

  • hi ron, jonny starling here, just thought id drop you a line to congratulate you on this piece.i miss watching you guys since i sold the pub, stick some more on here mate, superb!!!

  • Hi Jonny, we have some more dates at the Orchard. Come down and see us and bring your guitar mate! Glad you like this, I will try my best to get some more up asap. Take care.

  • Stratocasters are simply the best especially when played by someone with so much feel and love for the guitar.

  • I totally agree :-)

  • I just caught your vid. Awesome rendition! SRV would be proud. I just put your vid in my favorites. I thought I knew how to lay down this tune. Now, I have to pick apart your artistry to try to aspire.--Born to Play the Blues---

  • That's really kind of you to say bud. I hoped SRV would approve, nice to think someone else does. :-)

  • Damn, that's quite some sound you've got there! Great vid!

  • Thanks, just a strat, a lead and a little tube amp. Can't go wrong :-)

  • sounds great are those texas specials pickups by any chance?

  • Thanks. No, they are from front to back: A genuine '59 strat pickup, an SD Alnico II Pro and a Fralin Vintage Hot. I'm using the front and mid on this clip.

  • I have to say Ron. I have got a Knob on!

I don't understand how you are able to nail blues so well. What is your Secret? Why is it that I can play Satch and Vai stuff, yet struggle with the complex nuances and dexterity of a fantastic bluesman like yourself? You have won me over. I will get a chance to come and see you again soon. Just been busy. Best wishes. You have been a big influence in shaping my own stylistic direction. Merry christmas to you and your family.

  • Hi Lee, glad to hear you're still around. Come and see the band on the 24th Jan at the Walnut if you're free. Thanks for the compliments, see you soon. :-)

  • Just awesome!! I'm so tired of clicking on vids and seeing chumps trying SRV's stuff~ you, my friend, should post a million more! Great work!!!

  • many thanks mate, that's very kind of you to say. I will certainly get around to posting some more soon.

  • That was EXELLENT friend!

When u gonna post Part 2?!!!

  • very nice, what kind of an amp do you use? is fender? your tone is close the original one...

  • Thanks. It's a stock Fender Blues Junior, the tweed version.

  • Fantastic! Perfect playing with killer tone. Can't stop watching it and can't wait to see more clips from you!

  • Great playing and nice jumbo frets

  • May I ask what settings you used on the EQ for this? I love that tone, and your playing is awesome.

  • Thanks man! The settings (IIRC) are Rev:3-4 Master:3ish Mid:3 Bass: 11 Treb:6-7 Vol:4 Fat switch in, the strat was on the front and mid pups and there are no effects. Hope this helps. :-)

  • thats amazing man. keep it up

  • Thanks I will. Will try to post some more different stuff soon.

  • What gauge are those strings?

  • They're smaller than you think ;-) If you're thinking what I think you're thinking!

    10-46

  • Wow that was so awesome.

  • That's really kind cheers.

  • very nice playing. these slow blues are my favorites. i think stevie's best version is the montreux one imo. great playin again and keep on postin some more!!

  • Thanks! I agree about Montreux.

  • hehe... what a tone - love it

  • Thank you!

  • i'd tap that!!

  • I think tapping in a blues solo is a little inappropriate Solomon. ;-)

  • giggiddy giggiddy giggiddy giggiddy gooooo!!!! alllriiiiiight.....

  • Hey Ron, Mark Howes here, nice tone and playing and glad to see ya on youtube, Finally !! Never seen this strat before, new one ?

  • Nope, just a bitsacaster. You've probably seen various bits of it at gigs before LOL.

  • Nice feeling, and the frasing is awsome, whats you setup ?

  • Thanks for the comment. Nothing unique in the setup, just a mongrel strat and a Fender Blues Junior

    :-)
