Thank you for honoring Alex Chilton in this way. This is certainly one of the most touching commemorations I have heard in a political forum.
I was 6 when I first heard Alex Chilton singing The Letter. I still have the very 45 my mom bought back then. I grew up on Alex's music--from the Box Tops to Big Star, to his solo endeavors--I love it all--and his passing was deeply saddening. It just goes to show that we need to appreciate each and every day. Congressman, YOU ROCK!
I never thought I would see the day that the Replacements get name checked in the halls of Congress. Thank you so much for that heartfelt tribute to Chilton.
That was pretty cool. I had read you had done that, a class thing to do. The Letter was the first song I knew all the words to as a kid, Alex Chilton meant a lot to me. That voice. I have been rediscovering him this year, his sudden passing shocked me. A moving tribute, before the House of Representatives. Alex, a shy musician would be pleased & honored by your words. In this political climate, the nicest thing I have seen in years. Best 2 you, Memphis & Tennessee.
Good on you Congressman Cohen. You did Alex proud there. Thanks for him. From and Irishman living in Paris. Alex 's music left an indelible mark on people far and wide and will undoubtedly leave its mark on future generations.
No one could have done a better job of paying tribute to Alex Chilton. If our every legislator were blessed with this kind of depth intelligence, and humanity, we'd be a different country. Thanks, Rep. Cohen.
I'm encouraged that a sitting congressman knows who Alex Chilton, REM and The Replacements even are, much less taking the time to memorialize Alex. Nice work, sir!
Thanks for this. For a brief moment - and for probably the first time in more than a decade - this made me proud to be a Memphian and proud it's my birthplace. Though I lost my fondness for this city years ago, I am ever thankful that you have continued to remain in office and continue to serve this city. Many get elected to various posts, but few seem to truly care but yourself.
RIP Alex. This city has lost a special native son, and it and the music world have lost an absolute gem this week.
Steve, you are the coolest congressman in the house. Thanks for this tribute. We'll miss Alex ... I was so looking forward to seeing Big Star at the Shell next month.
I like how he talked out the lyrics of The Letter and called the Rolling Stone list the best albums "In America", but I'm happy he commemorated Alex in this way.
At 16 Alex had a voice that was smooth and rich and soulful. I loved it. I played The Box Tops on all the radio stations I worked on tor over 25 years. You will be missed Alex!
Dear Mr. Cohen, thank you for this. Best regards from Sweden.
May I ask you to consider guaranteed treatment to US troops for pontential PTSD after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. That would truly be supporting your troops.
Beautiful, eloquent, and heartfelt. Thank you, Rep. Cohen, for commemorating Alex's life in this way. A giant has passed, and those of us who loved Alex and his music are in deep mourning today. As you say, though, his music will live on forever.
great presentation.. congrats keep it up ..
